2012-13 San Francisco Dons Women’s Basketball Game Notes (Jan. 19) | page 2

Devine’s Dimes Two of the biggest wins in San Francisco history have taken place at Santa Clara. The Dons captured their first ever WCC Tournament championship by beating Portland at what was then called Toso Pavilion in 1995. USF cut the nets down again in ’96, also beating Portland on the way to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen! SCU transformed the old Toso Pavilion into the Leavey Center in 2000. The Broncos traded in their ragtop arena for a hardtop one - goodbye revolving doors to maintain the proper air pressure and the cranky old usher who used to yell at people for using the regular exit doors after games!” - USF play-by-play man, George Devine on Santa Clara Know the Foe The Broncos have a trio of double-digit scorers on the season in Meagan Fulps (11.4 ppg), Ricki Radanovich (10.8 ppg) and Lindsay Leo (10.1 ppg). The expected starting lineup, which includes these three plusRuta Zurauskyte and Raquel Avila, contributes 45.8 of Santa Clara’s 62.1 points a night. After wins against Loyola Marymount and at Pepperdine, the Broncos enter Saturday’s contest riding a two-game winning streak. Loyola Marymount Remix Zhane Dikes paced the Dons against the Lions, scoring a career-high 20 points and swishing her first collegiate 3-pointer. The freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., also played her second complete game of the season. Alicia Scafidi pulled down 13 rebounds in the contest to pick up her fifth dou-ble-digit rebounding effort of the year. She crashes the glass a team-leading 7.2 times a night.

By the Numbers—The Highlights The Dons dot the WCC leaderboard, in both team and individual categories:

2012-13 San Francisco Dons Women’s Basketball Game Notes (Jan. 19) | page 3

Mel Khlok Named WCC Player of the Month—December During the seven-game span in December, the senior guard from Sacramento, Calif., shot a sweltering 50.6 from the field including a 16-of-38 performance from beyond the arc to average 19.1 points and help the Dons to a 4-3 record in December. Her con- sistent scoring presence throughout the season allows Khlok to lead the way for the Dons, in a variety of ways.

“It's just me going out and playing and doing whatever I can to help my team because everything I do out there is for my team,” Khlok said on being selected by the confer-ence. “I honestly don't even think about my points or scoring, it's always about how what I'm doing is going to help the team. And sometimes when I'm just doing that, the scoring just comes as the game goes on.”

In a 92-64 win over San Jose State on Dec. 15, she swished a season-high 29 points, nabbed a career-high nine rebounds and reached the five-assist mark in a game for the third time this season. Along with starting every contest in the Dons' 2012-13 campaign and pacing the USF scoring output, Khlok leads the team in assists, steals and minutes.

“I am extremely proud of Mel, and not only what she's doing this season, but just her progress as a basketball player and a person. She's a captain. She's a leader,” head coach Jennifer Azzi said. “I think you're truly successful when the majority of your best players are your hardest workers, and I think Mel has learned how to work hard. It's great for our younger players to see that our hard work pays off.”

This monthly honor marks the first time a USF women's basketball player has been recognized from the conference in this capacity since Dominique Carter earned Player of the Month for her performance in December 2007.

Faces of the Future Three women inked letters of intent to play for coach Jennifer Azzi and the San Fran-cisco women's basketball team, announced on National Letter of Intent signing day Nov. 14.

“I am thrilled about our 2013 Class!” Azzi remarked. “I am honored that three out-standing student athletes have chosen to join us to continue to build a first-class pro-gram at USF.”

Two Bay Area women are joining the Green and Gold, in guard Kalyn Simon from San Jose, Calif., and Hashima Carothers out of Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Calif.

Simon plays her prep basketball for athletic powerhouse and defending state champi-ons Archbishop Mitty HS. She is currently ranked as one of the Top 50 point guards by position, according to ESPN, and is slated as the 14th-best player in Northern Califor-nia by NorCal Preps.

Also joining the Dons, Carothers comes to USF from a Panther team that made it to the Division 5 State Final Four during her junior season. In that run through the brack-ets, Carothers averaged a double-double of 12.9 points and 12.8 rebounds a game.

The pull of the USF program is stronger than the bounds of state borders, as the Dons welcome Claudia Price to the Hilltop from West Mesquite, Texas.

Price, a 6-0 forward, had a junior season marked with stellar averages of 17.5 points and 12.8 rebounds a game from the post. With Price as the team captain, the Wran-glers advanced to the District 15-4A Regional Finals. She was named the district most valuable player for her efforts in the 31-7 campaign. West Mesquite was an undefeated 16-0 in league play during the regular season.

Simon, Carothers and Price will join the program in the fall of 2013.

USF and Santa Clara—The Series The Broncos and the Dons is known as one of the longest rivalries in USF his-tory and dates back to intercollegiate competition as early as 1907. In wom-en’s basketball, Santa Clara owns a 45-35 all-time record over USF, and the series inception was in 1976, the first year the Dons began competing in the sport. The Broncos nabbed two victories in last season’s competition, a 59-51 win on the Hilltop and a 69-62 win at Santa Clara.

Head Coach Jennifer Azzi

Jennifer Azzi is no stranger to success in her storied basketball career, with achievements ranging from seven hall of fame inductions to international medals, and most valuable player awards to national championships. In her third year on the Hilltop, successes are being seen throughout the women’s basketball program. During the 2011 season, the Dons notched a road win over BYU, the first time in 16 years that USF de-feated a nationally-ranked opponent away from War Memorial Gym. In the current 2012-13 campaign, USF posted its best non-conference record since 2007-08’s 9-6 mark against out-of-conference foes. Despite a collegiate career that ended over two decades ago, Azzi still sits in 10th in NCAA history for career 3-point field goal percentage (45.2—191-of-423 in 95 games). She sunk seven 3-pointers in the 1990 Final Four in route to a national championship, good for a tie for second all-time and just behind Stanford teammate Kay Steding’s eight. In 1989, Azzi’s 9-of-11 shooting from long range stands as the highest 3-point field goal percentage in the NCAA tournament.
