Is your child bored at school? Are you tired of the homework fight every night?

Does your quirky kid struggle to be accepted?

Renaissance Village Academy is a private, non-religious full-time school serving gifted, profoundly gifted, and highly motivated

children in grades K-8.

Our schedule is designed for the working parent (9:15 am -5:15 pm most days), so homework is done with credentialed teachers.

Minimum day is Wednesday and every other Friday.

ATTENTION PRE-K PARENTS! Is your child “too young” for kindergarten, but ready for school?

If she’s at least 4 yrs, 9 mos., consider RVA as an academic alternative for your bright youngster.

• Refuse to work on anything else until one project is complete

Lose 20 lbs. this SUMMER!“I’ve been on Dr. Wong’s program for 24 days and I’ve lost 20 pounds so far. I feel very good about it and I’m feeling progress everyday and I

recommend it to anybody.”Isabelle S. — San Diego

“So far in the last 60 days, I lost 35 pounds and I even took seven days off during the holidays for eating fat foods! I expect to drop an-other 25 pounds

in the next 30 to 60 days!”John R. — San Diego

“I knew I wanted to make changes after I had my 2 year old and get rid of my baby fat. Dr. Wong guided me along the way and was very support-ive and I’ve lost 23 pounds in 2 months. I’ve met my goals and I’m happy! I feel a lot better, healthier and I have more energy. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to get new clothes!”

Mandy C. — San Diego“I’ve tried every known diet program out there but I’ve always gone back and gotten even larger than when I first started. I knew I needed to do something

different. With Dr. Wong’s program, within 2 months, I’ve lost a total of 38 lbs. I feel great! My goal is to lose another 25 lbs and I’m ecstatic. I want to thank Dr. Wong and his staff for their support because otherwise it would have been much more difficult.”

Chris U. — Chula Vista

“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. After

I had a consultation with Dr. Wong, he told me what was wrong. Everything we did involved no pain and in 8 weeks, I have lost 32 pounds without doing exercise! I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate ev-erything about Dr. Wong. If you’re ever in need of optimal health, come see Dr. Wong because he’ll make you strong!”

Rodney W. — San Diego

I started with Dr. Wong exactly 50 days ago when I decided to do something for me. I was scheduled for surgery and needed to lose 20

pounds but I’m happy to say I’ve lost over 30 pounds! I’m very happy and appreciative because it’s been easier than before and it’s been worth the money and the time.

Cyndi F. — San Diego

“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake

up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!”

Mission Statement To enhance the quality of life for San Diego County families by pro-viding information and resources that support the importance and pleasure of parenting.

Our San Diego Families

Summer Fun is Here!

What are your family’s summer boredom busters?

Mayka Rosales, administrative assistantWe love the San Diego Safari Park. My toddler’s favorite activity is the tram ride. It feels like we are on a real African safari adventure!

Ramona Warner, marketing representativeParticipating in a student exchange program will keep us busy. We will be So Cal tourists with my daughter’s new friend from Italy: San Diego museums, SeaWorld, Point Loma Lighthouse, plus visits to Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier, Malibu and Rosarito Beach.

Tony Andrews, marketing representativeOur family is never bored! People come to San Diego for vacation and we don’t take it for granted that we live here. With San Diego’s beautiful weather and coastline, you’ll find us at the beach several times a week.

Lisa Pawlak, contributing writerWhenever my kids complain they are bored, I make helpful suggestions. I usually start with, “Figure it out or go clean your bathroom.” It is amazing how this sparks creativity!

The votes are in! You nominated and voted for your favorites in San Diego Family’s Best of Family Fun. It is always fun to get your input. Thank you for participating in this annual contest. See the results starting on page 24. Plan to visit the winners and runners-up listed and look for more winners at www.SanDiegoFamily.com. Congratulate them when you visit!

On July 4th, our nation celebrates our independence. We are so fortunate to have freedoms in the United States of America. There will be lots of picnics and parties in San Diego County. Jenny, our calendar editor, highlights July 4th fireworks, parades and festivals on page 48. She has also compiled many beach and water activities in the calendar.

There are gobs of summer toys on the market this summer. Family Magazine features toys that have been reviewed by San Diego County kids and parents—that may include some of you. View them on page 36 and see more toys on our website.

It is not too late to sign your kids up for summer camp. Check out our advertisers to see if they have openings for last-minute campers. Read about getting the most out of summer camp on page 22.

The surprise noted in our June issue is out of the bag! Did you notice we upgraded the paper in Family Magazine? It has been a long-time goal of ours. It goes to show that if you dream about it and work hard at making something happen, it will come true. Tell us what you think—we enjoy feedback from our readers.

Summer Reading IncentivesReading is always fun, but especially during the summer when special reading programs are

in full swing! Help kids register so they can be rewarded with cool prizes. Learn about specific dates, ages and reading requirements at www.SanDiegoFamily .com/for-the-kids/summer-reading-programs/218.

Free Lunches for KidsAccording to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, free, nutritious meals are available to low-income students ages 18 years and younger while school is not in session. The USDA Summer Food Service Program is providing meals at more than 200 San Diego County locations. No

paperwork or registration is required. Find the nearest Summer Food Service Program site in one of three ways:

• Send a text message. Text FOOD to 877-877.

• Call 2-1-1 San Diego for details. Dial 2-1-1.

• Map it online. Visit www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks.

Safeguard Your Pets during Fourth of JulyFireworks can be terrifying for pets. They have a heightened sense of hearing that sometimes causes them to run away in search of safety. The San Diego Humane Society offers tips to help keep your pets safe during fireworks and Fourth of July festivities. Start by keeping your pets indoors (with all doors and windows closed) and let all your guests know to do the same. Learn more at www.sdhumane .org/four-tips-for-a-safe-4th.

Send us your photos!Your family could be featured on our August Readers Page! We’re looking for photos of San Diego families (or just the kids) having fun this summer. Email your awesome hi-res photo with the names of people pictured, ages of kids, a sentence describing what’s happening in the photo and the San Diego community you live in to [email protected]. Put “Family Summer Fun” in the subject line. Deadline: July 2.

Coming up next: Check our August issue for details on having your child’s artwork featured in September or October!

Keep Kids Safe Around WaterDrowning is the number one unintentional cause of death for children ages 1 –4. Though child drownings in pools and spas have decreased in recent years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safely campaign encourages adults to follow simple safety steps around water:

• Install a self-closing, self-latching gate around pools and spas.

• Designate a “water watcher” to supervise children in the pool or spa (the person should not be distracted with reading, texting or anything else).

• Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim.

• Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.

Read more about the Pool Safely campaign at www.poolsafely.gov.

Comic-Con is Coming!Comic-Con is July 21-24, but be sure to visit www .SanDiegoFamily.com/things-to-do/seasonal-happenings/1433 around July 15 for an updated list of Comic-Con inspired events around town, geared specifically for families!

Learn Music in a Professional SettingAll About Music San Diego (AAMSD) provides professional training for teens and young adults (ages 12-23) in a variety of music styles: orchestral, chamber, southwestern, pop, jazz and more. In July, the public can also sign up for fiddle classes and learn western-style music.

AAMSD coaches are musicians associated with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Chamber Orchestra and more. They encourage excellence, friendship and fun in a nurturing environment. Young musicians who want to perform at a high level work closely with these professionals, even sitting side-by-side during rehearsals and some performances.

“Every musician has the opportunity to solo with orchestra accompaniment in exciting venues across our city,” says Mary Gerard, president of All About Music. “It provides a huge boost to the musician’s confidence and self-esteem.”

New students are welcome year round. Don’t miss the new beginners class for students in 1st through 6th grade, starting in September!

During the summer, I’m one lucky gal—my teacher husband is at home most days, so we swap childcare duties and work time as needed. This means that after months of mom-centric care, our three kids get to adjust to their patriarch’s parenting style. It’s distinctly different from mine: he instructs less, plays more and isn’t nearly as productive. Which, as it turns out, is a good thing. While my own juggle-it-all parenting style works for me, I’m definitely learning a thing or three from him. Here are a few pieces of daddy parenting wisdom, courtesy of my better half.

Put Your Feet UpKeeping up with our active children—currently 9, 6 and 3—is no easy feat. Most days, it’s downright exhausting. Instead of complaining about how tiring it is (like I do), my spousal unit does something more practical: he takes a break when he needs one. He doesn’t neglect the kids, but he does zone out in front of ESPN for 10 minutes when he needs a breather. And get this: the kids survive. They usually take a cue from him and slow down, too, snuggling up to him on the sofa or grabbing a book and reading in their room. The result is a happier, less harried parent and kids

who appreciate the importance of a well-deserved break.

Lesson: Good parenting doesn’t mean running yourself ragged. Let kids see you take a breather now and then.

The Joy of Single-TaskingWhen I’m with the kids, I’m a multi-tasking whiz. Often, I’ll start the laundry while they eat breakfast, fold clothes while they play, answer emails while their pasta boils, and wipe down the counters while they eat lunch. On my husband’s days with the kids, he specializes in single-tasking—he just spends time with them. At the day’s end, there may be unfolded laundry on the floor and dirty dishes in the sink, but the kids are happy and centered.

Lesson: What kids really want is undivided attention. They come first; chores can wait.

Home Sweet HomeLike loads of other work-at-home and stay-at-home moms, my days with the kids are rarely spent at home. I go a little stir-crazy staring at my four walls, so I plan activities and play-dates to get us out of the house.

This also lets me squeeze in errands so I can feel marginally productive (see above re: multi-tasking). But my spouse doesn’t share my affinity for the carpool lane. Under his watch, the kids have rediscovered the joy of our own backyard. The older two catch butterflies and study spiders and the toddler digs happily in the sandbox. Everybody’s happy, and we save gas and hassle. Here’s to Dad for the win.

Lesson: Park the car; sometimes the best days are lazy ones spent at home.

Screen SceneThe American Academy of Pediatrics is OK with up to two hours per day of screen time for kids over two. In other words, some daily TV and iPad time is doctor-sanctioned. Yet, I feel myself tense up when the kids start a second episode of Wild Kratts on Netflix. “It’s summer—get outside and play!” is my automatic response. Outdoor play is invaluable, of course, and our kids get plenty. But indoor time has value, too, as a respite from the elements and a chance to unwind for a moment or two. My husband balances backyard and park time with an indoor quiet time after lunch, during which the kids curl up with books or (gasp!) catch a

show. They appreciate the break—and I appreciate the cute photos of my offspring curled up together, giggling at a funny cat video on YouTube. Outside, the kids tend to run in different directions; indoors, they pile on the living room rug, huddled together with limbs intertwined. These summer memories are priceless, and they wouldn’t happen without a little well-chosen screen time.

Lesson: Balance outdoor time with quiet indoor moments for summer magic.

All Hail the “Music Truck”For half a decade, whenever the ice-cream truck’s warbling notes drifted into our neighborhood, I’d quickly say “Hey, it’s the music truck!” and hold my breath, hoping no one would start digging through my purse for a dollar. My kids bought it, and enjoyed the jangling, jaunty notes without begging for overpriced ice cream treats. But by last summer, the ruse was wearing thin; my brood had connected the “music truck’s” arrival on our street with the neighbor kids obtaining all manners of frozen treats, and they were disgruntled. So the next time the tinny tunes appeared on our street, my wise husband dug into his wallet and peeled off a few bills for the kids. He shot me a look that said, “They’re only kids once.” And he was right. Summertime is made to savor, and seeing the kids thrill to new-to-them nostalgia is part of the joy, even if it leads to an inevitable sugar coma.

Lesson: Childhood is short. Let them get ice cream.

Thanks to my husband’s more laid-back, in-the-moment parenting style, our summers are more relaxed, less rushed and decidedly sweeter. It’s a balance I wouldn’t trade for all the music trucks in the world. v

Be InvolvedMake the effort to attend camp family days since your child will be eager to share his day-to-day adventures with you. Having you participate in a three-legged race or come to an end-of-camp art show will mean the world to your young camper.

Throughout the summer, celebrate successes small and large. Did he earn a new swim badge, take third place in archery or make the final round of beach flags? If he’s excited about something that happened at camp, cheer him on. Have a celebratory special treat, do a silly dance together or put up a “Congratulations!” sign.

Collect MemoriesAsk your child to record camp memories. This can be as simple as writing a handful of words like “beach trip”, “soccer” or “wood craft” on a piece of paper—or it might entail lengthy, detailed journal entries that document top experiences, favorite projects, descriptions of field trips, fun times with new friends, or the challenges of camp life. If your child prefers technology, let him type entries on the computer. Or if he isn’t writing yet, have him draw a picture and add a descriptive title.

At the end of the summer, collect these pieces of writing or drawings, along with photographs, camp brochures and other related items to create a collage, scrapbook or memory album. This can be done with anything from a poster board or simple notebook, to a handmade scrapbook, store-bought memory album or online digital creation. Whatever method is used, this visual collection of summer camp fun will serve as a fantastic memory keepsake for years to come.

Don’t forget to include a section for fellow campers’ signatures, end-of-summer best wishes and contact information. Keep those summer friendships alive because next summer will be here before you know it! v

How to Make the Most of Summer Camp

Lisa Pawlak

Summer is here! Whether your child plans to attend a local day camp

or spend most of the summer away from home, most

camp experiences offer the same essential elements of new

adventures: friendships and memories. Here’s how to help

maximize his summer camp experience.

Set GoalsDiscuss with your child

what he wants to get out of camp, and help him set some

solid goals. Does he regret not participating in that crazy pie eating

contest last year, or wish he’d jumped off the pier with the rest of the kids?

Encourage your child to participate in camp activities to the fullest; after all,

summertime is an ideal opportunity for personal growth.

Send the Right GearTo maximize fun and minimize potential discomfort,

be sure to send all the right gear— whether sunscreen, swimsuit, a refillable (leak-free) water bottle, wide-

brimmed hat, lunch or snacks that don’t melt in the hot sun. Think through each day’s activities, check specific camp

recommendations, and borrow or purchase items needed. Always make sun-safety a priority.

While smartphones and digital cameras might not be permitted at camp, many will allow disposable cameras to document adventures, and some are even water-resistant. Most importantly, remember to actually develop the film!

The lure of slowing down over summer sounds idyllic in the midst of hectic school schedules, but what if your child is already singing the summertime boredom blues? Try filling his dance card with an assortment of creative, educational and exhilarating activities. Not only will you fight off boredom, you’ll create plenty of new memories while relaxing, playing and learning together as a family!

Go on a water adventure. Pick a day to try something new as a family: go paddle boarding, kayaking or take a group surf lesson. If you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, choose a San Diego waterfront adventure. Find ideas at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/out-and-about/over-600-things-to-do/1814.

Tend a garden. Together with your child cultivate containers of herbs, tomatoes or peppers. Take a photo each day to track the progress of the plant’s growth. Have your child put the photos in a nature journal and write down any observations. Together, prepare a meal using your family’s homegrown produce.

Observe the stars. On a clear night, gaze toward the heavens, or attend Stars in the Park at Reuben H. Fleet Science Center on the first Wednesday of each month. Try identifying a few of the 88 different constellations, many of which are named after mythological people and animals. Interested in learning more about the characters dotting the celestial night sky? Read D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths by Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire.

Sleep outdoors. Chris Starnes, a mom of three, says her family loves to camp. They look forward to hiking, biking and taking a break from electronics. “State parks are well-patrolled and there are usually activities for the kids during the day,” she says. “Go where there is a playground and don’t camp too far from restrooms!”

Simply pitching a tent in your own backyard for daytime play also provides hours of fun for the kids. Or build family memories by sleeping under the stars together.

Build and fly a kite. “The experience never fails to fill adults and kids with wonder every time they f ly a kite,” says Sean Beaver, a kite enthusiast and father of two. Kite f lying is an inexpensive and relaxing activity.

Check out the American Kite Association website (www.kite.org) which provides educational resources, including the history of kites and the science and math behind kite f lying.

Go local. Farmer’s markets offer an assortment of colorful, seasonal produce and other specialty foods. There’s no better time to taste locally grown foods and experiment with new wholesome recipes in the kitchen with your kids. Find a list of more than 40 San Diego County’s farmer’s markets at www.sdfarmbureau.org/BuyLocal/Farmers-Markets.php.

Cook up a story. Recipes help kids practice math and reading skills, but give cooking a literary twist that will delight even preschoolers. Read a book like If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Joffe Numeroff and make pancakes together. An older child who likes the Little House on the Prairie series, might enjoy The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Classic Stories by Barbara M. Walker.

Birdwatch. Learning about local birds helps children appreciate and build interest in their natural surroundings. Purchase or make a bird feeder to attract birds to your backyard. Use a local bird guide and listen for different bird songs to try and identify the birds visiting your yard. Read “How to Start Birdwatching with Kids” at www.SanDiegoFamily .com/out-and-about/over-600-things-to-do/1896.

Plan hometown field trips. New experiences help kids learn, grow and feel a connection to their community. Tour a local farm, visit the ballpark, explore historical landmarks or check out the multitude of San Diego museums that might interest your child. Get more ideas in Out & About 2016, the local guide to San Diego County at www.SanDiegoFamily .com/out-and-about/over-600-things-to-do. v

1. Get together with friends with little to no planning. A simple text message serves as the invitation. No one has to host. A potluck picnic is a simple way to share a no-fuss meal. Some venues may have food trucks on site for ultimate convenience.

2. Play outside with the family. Avoid being couch potatoes now that the kids are out of school. Most concerts are held at a park, so bring along your favorite ball or Frisbee and find an open space to play. You’re sure to meet people or bump into neighbors. Visit the playground if your kids need to climb. Some venues even offer games and bounce houses to keep children happy and active at the event. While the music is playing, it’s natural to get up and dance as a family.

3. Neighborhood concerts build community. People of all ages gather together, reminiscent of the piazzas in Italy where time slows, conversations flow and people share food and smiles. In our super busy, over-scheduled lives, it’s important to “schedule” some down time. It’s good for the kids to see grandparents dancing together and

enjoying life—and for older folks to see young families playing together in a positive way.

4. Share your love of music with your kids. San Diego summer concerts offer a wide variety of musical genres, everything from 80s rock and bluegrass, to Zydeco and Big Band. Sharing music with your kids allows you to tell stories and share a piece of your youth with them. It also offers an opportunity to watch live musicians, point out different instruments and sounds, or just boogie and be silly together.

5. Enjoy the beauty of nature together. When was the last time you ran around outside, observed clouds, watched the sunset or enjoyed a dinner picnic as a family?

6. Most outdoor summer concerts are free! So, what are you waiting for? v

Summer—the perfect time to get together with friends and family, relax and let your hair down. Make the most of the longer summer days by attending free concerts in your neighborhood. They’re easy to find, very low key (shorts and flip-flops are the dress code!), and parking is plentiful in most cases. It may become your family’s new summertime ritual.

• Create a “concession stand” with plenty of snacks you would find at a baseball game: popcorn, peanuts, red vines, sunflower seeds, Cracker Jacks and bubble gum. Find bushel baskets, chalkboard food labels, and striped and gingham wax papers (to line the baskets) at a local craft store.

• Cut paper lunch bags in half with decorative scissors for guests to put snacks in as they munch throughout the party. Use baseball stickers to decorate the bags or make baseball tags with a circle punch and white cardstock. Draw “stitching” with a red sharpie.

• Keep the menu simple with hot dogs and all the fixings, chili cheese nachos, potato salad and fruit salad. Write hot dog suggestions on a chalkboard menu. The All-American Dog, Chicago Dog, Chili Cheese Dog and New Yorker Dog (sauerkraut, onions and spicy brown mustard) are popular. Craft paper food trays are perfect for serving nachos and hot dogs.

• Lawn games (croquet, bocce ball) and a few beach balls (no baseball event is complete without them) add to the fun!

• To decorate, hang a festive red, white and blue fabric bunting (discover where to order one at www.SNRFSD.org/celebrate-jasmines-bunting-company) or make one with colored paper. Cover tables with simple white linens and a burlap runner.

• For dessert, ice cream sandwiches or cotton candy would fit the theme perfectly! v
