I n 1992 IRT began addressing the
critical issues of eye disease,
cataracts and vision loss through
its surgical and clinical programs that
have now been conducted in nine
countries. Thanks to the generous
support of our volunteers and donors,
this legacy continues. In May, IRT
partnered with The Africa Group (TAG)
to launch its Sight for Life program in
Uganda, a country of extreme poverty and few
medical specialists.
The seven member team, including medical
professionals from California, Colorado and
Virginia, spent eight days performing cataract
surgery and treating eye problems at St.
Anthony’s hospital in the small town of Tororo.
“I have been to many developing countries
over the years, but it is still shocking to me to
witness the profound poverty that exists in the
world. The hospital lacked even the most basic

supplies such as sheets

IRT’s Program
Director, Rose Uranga,
who accompanied the
team. “It took more
than two years to
plan, organize and
obtain Ugandan
approval for this
project, but the
overwhelming
gratitude of the
patients, many of
whom had lost the
ability to work and to care for their families, made it
all worthwhile”.
According to IRT volunteer, Regina Legge, C.S.T “ Unlike
most of our patients in the U.S. whose needs/wants are
to have better vision to drive, read or perhaps watch T.V.,
the patients in Uganda need to see for life providing
functions such as cooking over open fires, carrying water,
etc. These wonderful people have no sense of
entitlement. Being part of a team that gives them not
only their sight but their livelihood is a phenomenal
experience! The handshake or smile received after
removing an eye patch is the biggest reward.”
Special thanks to The Africa Group, our many medical
suppliers, and those team members who devoted their
time, expertise and financial resources to make this
mission possible: Kelly Hardiman, R.N., Kris Karlen, M.D.,

IRT will closely monitor the situation to determine
how to best help with the construction needs of the
orphanage along with continuing to assist with the
pressing needs of food and water throughout the
area. “In the meantime, we were happy to see that
the children had been moved to a small house where
they at least have shelter from the wind and rain,”
said Rose Uranga.
The Mission Par La Foi orphanage is only one of
hundreds of orphanages that were destroyed in the
earthquake – leaving thousands of orphans without
food or proper shelter. With your help, IRT will
continue to assist the victims of this epic tragedy for
as long as possible.

When the Mission Par La Foi orphanage, which
included a school and a clinic, collapsed on
January 12, one child was killed and forty
three others left homeless. All forty three children, along
with their caretakers, were living in a single tent when IRT
learned of their situation. Although relief organizations
assisting Haiti were depleting the supply of tents in the
U.S. and abroad, IRT was able to locate additional tents
and immediately send them to Haiti via air freight.
In June, long time construction volunteers Tim Connole,
General Contractor, and Jim Schaible, Architect, along
with IRT’s Program Director, Rose Uranga, traveled to
Haiti to visit the orphanage and investigate the possibility
of providing permanent shelter. Along with their tents
and sleeping bags, the group carried over six large duffle
bags filled with enough clothes, shoes and toys for every
child, a generous donation from San Diego Target stores.
IRT Returns to Haiti“The best part of the trip was seeing hope in the faces of the people,
especially the children, the hope we were honored to bring.”
Jim Schaible, IRT Construction Volunteer
Over the past 25years I havevolunteered withIRT in teachingconstructionpractices thatwould improvethe stability oftheir structuresand better thelives of those inforeign countries. Most recently IRTasked me to go toHaiti to assess thedamage to an orphanage, clinic and school (that had justbeen completed 3 years ago) from the January earthquake.
It was completely demolished with nothing salvageable. As a matter of fact, of the 3 story building, the 3rd storywas all broken up and sitting on the ground where the1st and 2nd levels were crumbled beneath. One of thechildren was in the building at the time of the quake andwas killed. Literally, thousands of buildings throughoutHaiti, many of which I visited have bodies trapped in therubble and will more than likely not be cleared for yearsto come.
This was truly one of the more shocking experiences of mylife. I do intend to return and “give back” where I can.Hopefully, in my little way, show them a more stable formof construction. The largest challenges the people of Haitiface are hunger, clothing and shelter. Three very basicassets we all take for granted.
We truly are so blessed with all we have. So I have arequest. I know you may think that we are going through“hard times” but believe me; we don’t have a clue whathard times really are. I hope that through my eyes, you cansee the true need of those in Haiti and donate whateveryou can to International Relief Teams – Haiti Relief and helpthose much, much more unfortunate than we are.
