Welcoming Change & Loving Every Minute of It!! Cyndi Barnett, 4-H Youth Development Advisor

Change is an everyday occurrence. How we handle change in our lives is a direct reflection on how we value life itself. What does change mean to you? Change means doing something different; something totally different. Change has two “parts”, one of which comes from the external environment. They are things that happen over which we have no control. The other “part” includes those changes we choose internally, aimed at keeping the organization or the self in tune with the present and sensitive to possible future events.1 Here is an example of each:

• External change from the outside is the expected decline of total population in many countries in the year 2050.

• Internal change is when new policies and procedures are implemented to enhance the efficiency of an organization.

Values are a guide to the kinds of changes individuals are willing to support or fight. Clarification of values or reiteration of values needs to occur periodically acting as a rudder pointing toward the meaning of or the reason for existence. The basic values of an organization do not change radically even though their vision might.2 Many of you are aware of the many changes that have taken place over the past several months regarding the way the 4-H program manages itself. The San Bernardino County 4-H office is very grateful for all of your patience and willingness to change! We thank you and appreciate your helping us make this transition smooth! Most of all, we value any input you may have during this time! THANK YOU!! 1 & 2 – Wikipedia on line Retrieved April 24, 2008.

2008 WINTER CAMP

Teen Council held their second annual Winter Camp in Big Bear in March. There were youth from five clubs participating. The price of the weekend was supported by the Teen Council candy sales, with Daylene and Candace Yanez being the top sales people. Fun was had by all, tubing in the snow, karting and the alpine slide. Once again, the boys were the better cooks, with lots of food and walking distance to Starbucks. The checker championship was won by Steven Sornoso and the camp king and queen were Matthew Eshelman and Tory Grainger. Congratulations to the teen council officers for planning a fun weekend. There are a lot of photographs available so check out the fun and plan on joining us next year.

Tory Grainger, Teen Council President

Service Learning Challenge

"Acting with informed concern for self and others." 4-H clubs need to work on incorporating citizenship into everything they do. The emphasis needs to be not just on having our 4-Hers go out and do a one-time project, but rather having them learn about their communities and its needs and then developing a service that fits those needs. That is Service-Learning. This helps the 4-Hers learn about their communities and act as good citizens. The Citizenship Service Learning Advisory Council is challenging every club in California to develop and carry out a service-learning project. Contact Pat English at (530) 754-8520 or [email protected] for more information.
