Official Event GuideTRANSCRIPT
Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end.
A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands.
Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point.
Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

I tell my story because it makes a difference.
I tell my story because I won’t let breast cancer win.
I tell my story because I still can.
I AM SUSAN G. KOMENFOR THE CURE.
Help cure breast cancerer and save women’s lives. pVisit komen.org
Sonia Briseno was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. And because she didn’t have health Sonia Briseno was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. And because she didn t have health insurance, Sonia was unable to get the treatment she so desperately needed. But she applied insurance, Sonia was unable to get the treatment she so desperately needed. But she applied for and received a grant from a nonprofi t center—locally funded in part by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
ived a ggrant from a nonpprofit center locallyy funded in ppart byy Susan G. Komen ® —that paid for both her treatment and the care that followed. And for the last for the Cure that paid for both her treatment and the

SPECTATORS: Have a Plan!START LINEDo not attempt to watch the start of the race. There is no official race parking at the Start Line.
TRACK YOUR RUNNERFind your runner’s pace and projected finish time using the Pace Chart pro-vided on page 14.
Sign up for the Competitor wireless run-ner tracking text messaging service at www.competitorwireless.com.
GETTING AROUNDGiven numerous road closures and subsequent traffic on race day it is rec-ommended spectators drive as little as possible. Pick a place to park from the following options and walk to the Spec-tator-Friendly Viewing Locations listed as follows.
1. Satellite Parking: Satellite parking is available for spectators at the AT&T Cen-ter from 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Roundtrip shut-tles will run between the AT&T Center and the Alamodome (Finish Line).
2. Pay to park in a downtown lot or walk from your hotel to the spectator-friendly viewing locations downtown or at the Al-amodome (Finish Line).
IMPORTANT: Refer to the Road Closure information on our website before you do any driving on race day.
PLAN YOUR REUNIONMake a post-race reunion plan with your runner before the race. Large alphabetical signs will be posted in the Family Reunion area to help you reconnect easily with your runner—“Meet me at letter M!”
SPECTATOR-FRIENDLY VIEWING LOCATIONSDowntown is the best place to view your participant on the course, you can then walk to the Alamodome to watch them cross the finish line.
If you want to catch your runner and some ROCKIN’ live music, check out the band lineup in this guide or on the event website for a list of recommended spectator spots.
*Please be respectful of the historic mis-sions and do not park in their parking lots on race day.
SPECTATOR PARKING1. DowntownDowntown parking is considered park-at-your-own-risk. Due to road closures, only a small number of lots will be available to the public and once they fill up, they will be closed. Due to the small amount of available parking spaces downtown, ALL spectators are advised to use the free shuttle from the AT&T Center.
2. Satellite Lot @ AT&T Center Spectators are encouraged to park at the AT&T Cen-ter and take a complimentary round trip shuttle to/from the finish line. Shuttles will run for spectators from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. to the finish line. There is no spectator shuttle to the start line—only the finish line. Spectators should not arrive before 7:30 a.m; there are no specta-tor shuttles before 7:30 a.m. There will be no spectator shuttles from the start to the finish line.

We want EVERYONE to have the opportunity to enjoy the party and perks of what the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series has to offer, so we have implemented a Mini Marathon in San Antonio!
The Mini Marathon is a great way for friends and family members to get a taste of what the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Anto-
nio Marathon & ½ Marathon benefiting Susan G. Komen™ is all about, without making them run 13.1 or 26.2 miles! Participants share parts of the course with our Marathoners, enjoying the Start Line, cheer teams, course bands, and hydration stations. The 3 mile course will end in front of the historic Alamo.
Get your spectators involved and sign them up for the Mini Marathon! They can run or walk, and then meet you at the Finish Line Festival. It’s a great way to enjoy all the race day benefits, together!
Experience Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun with a Shorter Run!

GET FIT Team Spotlight:
Whether you are running to socialize, build company or team unity, you can GET FIT and make a statement with numbers!
Organized groups of 10 or more can take part in the GET FIT Challenge on Sunday. GET FIT teams come from many different settings, but all come to share in the liveliness and high spirits as-sociated with finishing a goal together as a unit!
NISD Marathon TeamTexas’ 4th-Largest Public School System Shoots for R ’n R Team Record.
With a history of emphasis on faculty fitness, Northside Indepen-dent School District staff mem-bers in San Antonio hope to beat their record over last year. Dedi-cated to supporting NISD teach-ers, the public school foundation, Northside Education Foundation (NEF) solicits sponsorships for the team and encourages staff, their families, and all the people in the quarter-of-a-million people in the 100,000-student system to participate in the race in some way – as a runner or volunteer.
UIW Rock’ N Red Birds Most people would laugh when asked if they could com-plete a half-marathon in the next few months. Rosa Aguilar-Delgado is not one of those people. She had been thinking about reg-istering for the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and 1/2 Marathon for a while and then when she received an email from Alumni Relations asking to help UIW, she saw it as a sign. Her faith and cour-age to take the Get Fit Challenge has been ampli-fied by the strong but quiet example she provides to her other UIW Rock’ N Red Bird teammates. At the first kick-off session as new teammates shared their goals, she explained that she intended to com-plete her first half-marathon even though she had pins in her back from a previous surgery.
You can find more info on the UIW Rock’ N Red Birds at www.uiwalumni.org/rocknredbirds
TRINITY UNIVERSITYTrinity University has had a team in the San An-tonio Rock ‘n’ Roll series since 2008. Typically 100 students, alumni, parents, and employees sign up to participate in the Dean of Students Half Marathon Challenge. In addition to the obvious benefits of health and wellness, they use this program to do training runs through wealthy and poor neighborhoods to underscore the needs of the poor in our own city. They do a food drive to honor Kayla Mire, who died in an accident months after graduating. She was an advocate for the homeless. To date they have collected over 30,000 pounds of food/donation equivalents. Trinity’s program received a national award in higher education in 2011.

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK GET SPONSOREDEndurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout.
That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:
• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle.
• The right carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel exhausted muscles.
• Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.
If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL.
Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score:
• $500 sponsorship• Top notch Team REFUEL training gear• Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad
$1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote.–Mirinda Carfrae,
2010 Ironman World Champion
TM
You’ve made lowfat chocolate milk part of your After. Represent it by submitting a video at Rock ‘n’ Roll event expos or online today! Read the science, submit a video and check out elite athlete training videos at gotchocolatemilk.com.

At 19, Jo Dee Messina loaded a car and headed to Nashville, where she entered talent contests and got a regular gig on Nashville’s “Live at Libby’s” radio show. Producer Byron Gallimore heard her and intro-duced her to another struggling newcomer named Tim McGraw. At a
backstage meeting at Fan fair, she met and charmed a Curb Records executive and got a record deal on the spot.
A dedicated runner, she has completed two marathons and continues to train. “On the road, I’ll get up and run, and since my steel player is training with me we run togeth-er,” she says. “Then I go to the gym and lift weights, have lunch, do the sound check and then my meet and
greet, do the show and get to bed as early as I can.
Her marriage to Chris Deffenbaugh and the addition of
their son, Noah, in January 2009, is part of a life in which genuine comfort and
happiness seem to be the main order of busi-ness. Balancing motherhood and her career is a challenge
she is facing head on with a joy befitting the situation.
For Jo Dee, it’s now about balance and living life to the fullest.

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…
TRAIN It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..
SALT Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE Fill out the medical informa-tion section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
