It was a cool spring day on St. Jean Street in Old
Quebec City and Sherlock Holmes and his
companion Watson were hard at work. They were
browsing the local news on Facebook when
Holmes came upon the oddest of mysteries.
Holmes read it aloud as Watson examined
a picture posted with the story: “Miss
Susan Cushing, living at Cross Street in Ste-
Foy, has been made the victim of a most
revolting practical joke. At two o’clock
yesterday afternoon she received a small
package, wrapped in brown paper, in the
mail. A cardboard box was inside, which
was filled with coarse salt...
On emptying the box, Miss Cushing was
horrified to find two human ears! The box had
been sent from Montreal the morning before.
There was no indication of the sender.”
Officer Lestrade, from the Quebec
City Police Department, asked
Holmes to visit the crime scene and
give his expert opinion. He wanted
the case to be solved ASAP.

Miss Cushing pointed to the outhouse, explaining
that she did not want the ears to enter her house.
Holmes and Watson arrived at Miss Cushing’s
home.

Holmes and Watson finished examining the
evidence and then returned to the house to
question Miss Cushing.
Holmes walked
across the living
room and picked up
a photograph on
the mantle.
Holmes picked up
another photo and
asked the same
question.
Holmes and Watson thanked Miss Cushing
for her cooperation and left for the police
station to discuss their findings with
Detective Lestrade.

Holmes handed Lestrade a business card
with the name of the criminal on it.
Lestrade and his officers immediately went
to the old port and arrested the criminal...
sailorsailor.
At the police station Lestrade interrogated the criminal. Under the heat of the lamp, the criminal
cracked and admitted everything.
But one question remained: Why were the
victims’ ears sent to Miss Cushing?
It was elementary. Jim Browner sent the
ears to Sarah because he believed that his
failed marriage was her fault. Unfortunately
for him, Sarah no longer lived with Susan.
