WelcomeChanging priorities within the National Health Service present healthcare providers with new and significant organisational challenges. In particular, in dealing with data and information management at a time of increasing patient choice and the digitisation of care records.
For NHS Foundation Trusts, bringing together paper and digital records to create a single, manageable care pathway is a major test of existing resources. Some Ambulance Trusts are being asked to respond to recommendations from the Care Quality Commission regarding the implementation of more robust methods of communication among staff or to patients.
The remaining Primary Care Trusts will need GPs and others to provide the right forms of patient information to secondary care providers while staying on top of budgets. At the same time, Clinical Commissioning Groups must quickly implement new systems and processes to maintain the timely, efficient and secure sharing of confidential information and meet rising standards in patient care.
These challenges are the same up and down the country. The increasing pressure on resources coupled with the digitisation of healthcare is placing extra demands on healthcare providers. As patients become more involved in their care, organisations like yours are being asked to balance quality of care targets with robust information management and operational efficiency.
But there are opportunities to develop too.
An organisational focus on increased patient choice, easy access to digital care records and value for money can lead to widespread improvements in service provision, enhanced staff satisfaction and better resource allocation.
Samsung understands how ongoing change in the National Health Service continues to affect healthcare providers. That is why we continue to invest in the sector, with a focus on quickly turning our technological innovations into healthcare solutions that have an impact on day-to-day hospital activities.
In the pages that follow you will see how we are doing this with our MultiXpress range of Android-powered printers. Designed to be easier to use, simpler to manage across multiple sites and more cost-effective to run, MultiXpress printers also support your changing priorities as a healthcare provider.
Read on to find out how the wireless MultiXpress range offers mobile printing to free up staff time; reduces the transfer of harmful bacteria across wards; and tracks every copy to keep you on top of your budgets.
You will also discover more about our Medical Security Printing Solution, Print Fleet Management Solution and Medical Document Workflow Solution and how the MultiXpress range will support the digitisation of your healthcare records, now and into the future.

A new generation of multifunctional printers is already helping healthcare professional rise to the challenge of delivering digital care pathways.

Improving patient choice
Patients and their GPs are empowered to select the best possible services from a wider range of healthcare providers. For Clinical Commissioning Groups, Acute Trusts, Ambulance Trusts and Primary Care Trusts alike, streamlining the administration process and freeing up staff time to deal with patients is the ultimate goal in today’s changing healthcare landscape.
Delivering value-for-money investments
From an administrative point of view, many care pathways share the same technology requirements. Being able to monitor the use of these technologies – in particular those that require consumables, such as printers – will go further towards making sure device purchases pay for themselves. Understanding who is using what and when will give IT managers a way to encourage less colour printing or more efficient duplex printing for example, helping to ensure better total cost of ownership.
Digitising care records
Government initiatives such as Digital By Default and plans for healthcare to be paperless by 2018 have encouraged the rise of e-health. Added to this is the demand for technology that moves with the user and the familiarity of mobile devices among healthcare professionals. Organisations must also respond with the technology to deliver faster inter- and intra-departmental digital record sharing.
Looking to green healthcare
Sometimes overlooked in a sector that is busy dealing with individuals, wider environmental responsibility is climbing up the agenda for many healthcare providers. Meeting Government drives for efficiency and improving sustainability are not mutually exclusive. Using technology that actively cuts energy usage and improves the use of finite resources is one way managers can have an immediate impact.
Challenges of changing healthcareSuccessive governments have launched far-reaching initiatives that have contributed to unprecedented levels of change within the National Health Service. From new service delivery standards to IT transformation projects and the digitisation of healthcare records, the result is increased pressure on healthcare service providers to meet a range of often competing objectives.
Impact across the board Expectations are rising within healthcare but not just among patient groups. With the potential for technology to make a difference to the way healthcare providers work, primary and secondary stakeholders already see the opportunities and want to take advantage today.
Key Challenges
Reducing healthcare complexities
The healthcare sector is characterised by complicated workflows. But with IT consumerisation, staff now expect the devices they use at work to be as simple those that they use at home. Ensuring devices are easy to operate and customising settings to make them simpler to rollout across multiple sites allows everyone to benefit. Offering wireless mobility and networked devices also supports paramedics and community nurses, while multi-function workstations in hospitals become better places to work, not bottlenecks.
Securing information management
Medical information is highly confidential and must remain so. Technologies that can reduce the costs of confidential data storage or disposal while improving the security of information are essential to the effectiveness of healthcare providers. These organisations must also comply with the latest information hygiene or governance standards and prevent unauthorised access to healthcare data.

Rising to expectationsin the digital ageIn an era of electronic care records and increasing patient choice, healthcare providers must now ‘compete’ to provide the optimum standards of service. But the all-embracing shift to mobile, digital and personalised healthcare requires supporting technology to be successful.
The smart, mobile devices that are now used within hospitals and out in the community require smart, mobile-enabled printing technologies so that document solutions are just as connected as the people who use them.
By actively assisting integrated care pathways, web and cloud based multi-functional printers can speed up the distribution of patient records and hard copy health information. Meanwhile, their intuitive interfaces, serverless capabilities and easy connections help ensure that the new apps and devices being used in modern healthcare scenarios do not become barriers to more efficient management.
Ready for Healthcare Samsung MultiXpress printersThe evolution of the Android™-powered Samsung MultiXpress printer range is evidence of a smarter approach to the digitisation of healthcare. With a more convenient and secure way to share paper or digital patient care records to and from devices, MultiXpress users save on admin time and cut the costs of inefficient document management.

Case in pointSamsung already works with healthcare providers big and small. From end-to-end healthcare solutions through to dedicated print facilities, Samsung is supporting office administrators, researchers, IT teams and medical staff to use technology more efficiently.
University of Reading Health Centre The University of Reading Health Centre provides healthcare services for staff and students as well as the general public across the Reading area.
The results
• Unobtrusive technology that is easy to set up and install in minutes
• Fast access to statistics and patient records for medical staff
• Improved reliability with no more problems like paper jams
The solution
• State-of-the-art Samsung printers
• Plug in and play printing with simple set-up guides
• Met the standards for reliability and affordability of the wider commissioning group
The challenge
To overcome the issues of an unreliable print fleet that would jam or leak, providing medical staff with the patient records and diagnostic data they need as fast as possible.
The printing off of
these reports and stats
requires efficient and speedy,
reliable printers.

Technology is now vital to
the running of a practice. The
whole system is based on electronic
records. If the system goes down it makes
it far harder for the doctor to achieve what he
needs to do in the ten-minute consultation…

NHS Trust
Case in pointSamsung already works with healthcare providers big and small. From end-to-end healthcare solutions through to dedicated print facilities, Samsung is supporting office administrators, researchers, IT teams and medical staff to use technology more efficiently.
Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust is a provider of hospital-based healthcare to over 356,000 people in and around Ipswich and East Suffolk, employing 3,500 staff.
The results
• A change in culture that has resulted in 30% cost savings
• Individual print reporting to drive down usage and waste
• Toners and inks ordered more efficiently and based on need
The solution
• Samsung multifunction laser printers
• Dedicated service and support from a single supplier
• Full print audit to determine the best use of printers and to establish a uniform, quarterly cost for consumables
The challenge
Printers and consumables were procured on an ad-hoc basis, with no centralised management. There were multiple maintenance contracts and no easy ways to make hospital-wide printing more efficient.
