at a glance

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A RESUME?

• A resume presents basic infonnation about your education and work experience in a way that will entice an employer to consider you for an interview.

• A targeted resume can highlight specific accomplishments that arc relevant to particular employers.

• A well planned resume reflects your ability to organize information and present it in a succinct manner.

WHAT SECTIONS SHOULD I INCLUDE ON MY LEGAL RESUME?

• Your legal resume should start with a heading that includes your name, address. and telephone number. Make sure this information is accurate. You can also include an E-mai l address.

• You do not need to include an Objective section in a legal resume. Information about your specific career goals belongs in the cover lener.

• For recent graduates, the Education section should come before the work experience section. Your law school entry should come first.

• Honors and activities should be listed with the school, i.e. , all law school entries should be listed with Thomas M. Cooley Law SellooL Drop undergraduate activities unless they are relevant to your job search.

• After Education, list informat ion on work or legal experience. You may want to d ivide your experience into l\VO sections called Legal Experience and Other Experience. You can include both paid and unpaid positions in these sections. List your experience in reverse chrono logical order. The most recent entry shou Id come first.

• You may want to include a section called Skills or Computer Skills. Include any language skills, computer skills, or other special abilities. For computer skills, list relevant business or legal software you can use.

HOW DO I LIST MY EDUCATION?

• For each entry, list the name ofthe schoo l and the city and state where it is located. It is more formal to spell out the name of the degree. A law degree is called a Juris Doctor. Then list the expected date of graduation. For example, Juris Doctor expected May 2007.

• Most employers expect to see your class rank and GPA. In general, include your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher, and include your c lass rank if you are in the top third of your class. If you decide to include them, list the c lass rank first. For example, Class Rank: 521200. GPA: 3.0.

• Drop entries for associate'S degrees and colleges you attended without getting a degree.

• High school should not be included.

HOW DO I LIST MY EXPERIENCE?

• Entries should be listed in reverse chronological order with the most recent experie~ce first.

• In Legal Experience, inc lude any legal experience you have had whether paid or unpaid. Include experience like 60+, legal volunteer work, or a leaching assistant position at Cooley.

• List you r title first and highlight it in some way (bold or underline). Follow it with the name of the firm, agency, or office and the city and state where it is located. Make sure you include the dates.

• Under each entry, describe what you did in a few phrases. Use action words. A void using phrases like Duties included; Responsibilities included; or Assisted.

• Try to keep your legal resume to onc page. If you have any questions about what to inc lude, make an appointment with a career advisor in the Career and Professional Development Office.

HOW SHOULD MY RESUME LOOK?

• Use a good quality ink jet or a laser printer to print your resume. Your paper should be high quality bond in white or off·white. Use the same paper for your cover letters.

• Do not experiment with unconventional fon ts. Use standard fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman. The font size should be no smaller than 10 and no larger than 12.

• Use bold text, italics, and bullets to high light key points of your resume such as the name of your school or your job titles. Do not overdo it.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT RESUMES?

• You will have to include your class rank and GPA to partic ipate in any On Campus Interview Program. This informat ion must be listed in the following format: ClaSl' Rank: 511200, GPA: 3.0.

• Don't mislead the employer about your degree. Make sure that your expected date of graduation is clear.

• Keep your resume to one page. Your legal resume is not you r complete life history but a summary of the highl ights re levant to an employer.

• Avoid including any activities that may be controversial. Th is would include things like politics, religion, and fraternities. You can include them if you know that mentioning them will help you get an interview.

• PROOFREAD YOUR RESUME. Go over it several times and have other people review it for you .

• If you are applying for different kinds of jobs, you may want to tailor your resume and emphasize relevant experience.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP WITH MY RESUME?

• The Career and Professional Development Office offers Resume Drop·l n Hours as we ll as individual advising appointments.

• The Career Resource Center has many books and handouts on all aspects of the career search.

RESUME WORKSHEET

EDUCATION Legal resumes combine all of your education under one heading. As a law student, your education should be listed before your professional experience since it will have the most relevance to the legal positions to which you are applying. List Cooley first, then tist all degree-granting undergraduate institutions in reverse chronological order. For each institution, list the name oflhe school, the city and state, degrees received or in progress, and the date the degree was awarded or is expected to be awarded.

Your work experience shou ld be explained in the way that the employer receiving it will best understand it. Your resume should be tailored for each employer to best frame your experience. Set a goal of three action phrases per job description which show responsibility and skills development. Concentrate on identifying transferable ski lls. Always express what you have accomplished, not the information that describes what you do every day. Avoid infonnation that the employer may already know and buzz words only appropriate for one area of work. List your experience in reverse chronological order. Your cover letter is an invaluable marketing tool. In many instances, it is your first contact with employers. An exceptionally written cover letter will emphasize your strengths and highlight your unique abilities and experience. It will grab the reader's attention and give yOll a competitive edge in a tight job market.

As you begin to write your cover letter, remember that employers read these letters with one question in mind: What's in it for me? Be sure to answer this question by highlighting your skills and accomplishments that uniquely qualify you for the position.

A FEW RULES OF THUMB

• Your cover letter should be one page in length, and error-free. Even a seemingly minor grammatical or typographical mistake can ruin your chances of landing an interview.

• Your cover letter must look impeccable. It should fo llow a standard business letter format. Your letter, resume and envelope should be printed on high-quality white or off-white paper. Use a simple font such as Times New Roman or Arial.

• Do not send a generic cover letter. Address each letter to a specific individual, even if it means making several calls to the employer to determine the appropriate person's name (with correct spelling) and job title.

• Express yourself directly and concisely. Use simple language and uncomplicated sentence structure. A void industry jargon and legalese. Most employers scan cover letters in less than a minute, so your information should be easy to absorb.

• Before you begin to write, research the employer. You may obtain information about prospective employers from the Career and Professional Development Office, Lexis, Westlaw, Martindale Hubbell Legal Directory and the employer's website.

THE BODY OF YOUR LETTER

Your letter should be three or four paragraphs long. To have the greatest impact, it should tell readers:

1. Why you are writing;

2. Why they should be interested in you; and

3. What action needs to be taken.

THOMAS M. COOLEY LAW SCHOOL CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

Page 24: Sample Resumes and Cover Lettersdocshare02.docshare.tips/files/20414/204141044.pdf• A resume presents basic infonnation about your education and work experience in a way that will

Paragraph One: Why you are writing.

In your first paragraph, state who you are, your current status, your objective and the specific position you are seeking. If you learned about the position from a mutual acquaintance, be sure to include this information immediately. For instance, "Professor Sam Smith recommended that 1 contact you. I am a second-year student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and I am interested in a summer clerkship at your firm. I am confident that my research and writing skills, positive attitude and dedication make me a great candidate for the position."

If you are able, draw on something you learned about the employer during your research. An example: "I was fascinated to read your profile in the March issue of the Michigan Bar Journal. In it, you described your law firm as being on the cutting edge of bankruptcy tax issues for small businesses. As a third-year law student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, I have a strong, demonstrated interest in tax law. I would welcome the opportunity to work with you as a tax attorney."

Middle Paragraph(s): Why the reader should be interested in you.

Discuss your relevant experience. Review your background and choose two or three accomplishments that would prove valuable to the employer. Tai lor your information to the specific employer's needs. Remember, the focus of the letter should be the employer's needs and how you can meet them. Do not simply repeat your resume. Use this section of your letter to demonstrate how your particular experiences translate into skills which will be important to this employer.

This is your opportunity to set yourself apart from other candidates. Let the reader know what you have to offer. Use anecdotes to highlight your skills and experiences in a specific manner. Don't simply state, "I am a self-starter." Instead, say "I understand that you seek out summer clerks who are self-starters. That describes my legal background perfectly. I spent last swnmer working wi th Ralph Lawson, a sole practitioner in Lansing. As he was running for state office, I was given unusual independence in structuring and completing the tasks that were assigned to me."

Final paragraph: What action needs to be taken.

End your letter by thanking the employer for reviewing your resume. State your interest in discussing the position in person, and inform your reader that you' ll follow up with a telephone call. Do not wait for the employer to contact you. Most employers will appreciate your initiative and perseverance. For example, "I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person. I will contact you in the next two weeks and, if possible, arrange a time to meet that will be convenient for you. I appreciate your time and consideration, and I look forward to speaking with you soon. II

The closing of the letter should be fonnal, such as Very truly yours or Sincerely. Sign each letter in black or blue ink.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The overall tone of your cover letter should be positive, confident and enthusiastic . With thoughtful preparation and careful execution, you will create a cover letter that compliments your resume and helps land a job interview.

Mr. John Goldman, Esq. Hiring Partner Stocker, Maller & Goldman, P.C. 417 N. Clippert Street Lansing, MI48901

Dear Mr. Goldman:

I am a first-year student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, and 1 am seeking an informational interview to discuss your perspectives on the practice of criminal law. My interest in the criminal justice system, and in particular criminal defense, stems from my prior educational and volunteer activities.

At the University of Illinois, I volunteered as a tutor with the Department of Corrections, assisting inmates in a literacy program. This helped me to understand the penal system and fostered my belief in inmate rehabilitation. Also, as a student counselor and judge for the University Judiciary Committee, I witnessed the critical role attorneys play in ensuring justice for all parties in need of representation in legal proceedings.

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to explore the criminal law field as a City of Lansing Teen Court volunteer, where I assist youth offenders. I anendjustice workshops and Teen Court hearings as a mentor and advocate for the offenders. This has introduced me to both the complexities of criminal procedure and the constitutional foundation of the criminal justice system. These experiences contributed greatly to my desire to pursue a career as a trial attorney.

I would appreciate any advice you might be able to share about your career path in criminal law. If you have time to share your expertise and knowledge either by te lephone, in person, or through email, then I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I will contact you next week to see if we may arrange a meeting during my winter tenn break.

Sincerely,

Diane R. Smith

Thomas O'Brien Vice President and General Counsel General Motors Corporation 4251 West State Street Detroit, Ml 48243

Dear Mr. O'Brien,

I am writing to apply for the staff attorney position with the General Motors Law Department which was advertised in Intellectual Properly Today. I graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in May of this year. While researching the General Motors Corporation, I was particularly interested in the news releases describing the joint venture with the Kia Motor Company in South Korea. This information convinced me that General Motors is a company where I could combine my law degree, engineering background, and language skill s.

I can offer your corporation a high quality legal education, a technical background, and experience clerking in one of the largest law firms in Michigan. My work at Miller Schwartz includes research on regulation compliance issues and international business contracts. Through this research, I have developed an interest in the environmental impact of industrial design choices. I have made an effort to keep up with the emerging issues in this field through membership in the Intellectual Property Law Society and by attending continuing education seminars. My interest in these legal issues combines well with my education and experience in the fields of chemical engineering and industrial design. My technical background enhances my legal work by giving me the skills to understand the industrial process and implementation.

I would like an opportunity to meet with you to discuss my qualifications and the ways I can contribute to the General Motors Corporation. As requested, I am seeking a starting salary in the $65,000 - $70,000 range. I am available to come to Detroit for an interview at your earliest convenience. I will be contacting your office to confirm your receipt of my resume and to see if we can schedule a time to meet. Thank. you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Susan Liu Bryant

Thank you for introducing me to your Employment & Labor practice group. Meeting the partners and associates provided me with ample opportun ity to appreciate your finn's depth of experience. My interest in an associate position has on ly grown after see ing your firm 's commitment to excellence and I would welcome the opportunity to become a member.

As we discussed, my background is strong in comparison to other candidates because of the two years ( spent with the AFL-CIO focusing entirely on grievance issues and collective bargaining affairs. EVALUATING A JOB OFFER

Once you receive ajob offer, you are faced with a difficu lt decision and must evaluate the otTer carefully. Fortunate ly, most organizations will not expect you to accept or reject an offer immediately. If you have not already figured out exact ly what you want, the following tips may help you develop a set of criteria for judging job offers, whether you are starting a career, reentering the labor force after a long absence, or planning a career change.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER ABOUT THE EMPLOYER

• Do the firm 's mission and practice areas match your own interests and beliefs?

• How will the size of the organi zation affect you?

• What is the nature of the job?

• Where is the job located?

• How long do most people who enter this job stay with the company?

FACTORS TO CONSIDER ABOUT YOURSELF

• Does the work match your interests and make good use of your skills?

• Are you comfortable with the hours?

• Are you comfortab le with the salary and benefits package?

ACCEPTING AN OFFER OR WITHDRAWING FROM JOB SEARCH

• As soon as your decision is made, promptly notify employers with a courteous telephone call expressing you r enthusiasm.

• Make every effort to speak to your contact in person rather than leaving a voice mail message for this purpose.

• After you have spoken to your contact, follow up with a written confirmation (bye-mail or hard copy, as appropriate based on each employer's preference).

• Accepting ajob offer ethically obl igates you to cease job search efforts and to notify other prospective employers that you must withdraw your name from their consideration.

DECLINING A JOB OFFER

• Decline an offer when the compensation is beneath the standard range or when you have a bad feel ing about your fit with the firm.

• tf you choose to dec line a job offer, do so courteously, in writing, after maki ng a telephone call.

• Never say anything negative in writing about the employer, even if you had a negative experience.

• A decision to decline an offer is usually based on the fact that another offer is a bener fit for your interests and goals. It is fine to state this, without giving details about why the declined offer is not a fit.

Page 58: Sample Resumes and Cover Lettersdocshare02.docshare.tips/files/20414/204141044.pdf• A resume presents basic infonnation about your education and work experience in a way that will

• It is not necessary to state whose otTer you accepted, but you may do so if you wish.

• Remember that this employer may be a contact for you in the future. Try to maintain a professional, courteous relationship.

SALARY NEGOTIATION

Negotiating a compensation package is every job seeker's final hurdle . It can also be a bit intimidating. The topic of one's worth can make even the most secure person apprehensive. Further, many people are so happy to receive a job offer that they fail to take advantage of their leverage at this critical time. There is a strong temptation to accept an employer's first offer. However, this may not be wise. Your negotiating strength is never greater than at the moment the employer invites you to join their team. The fo llowi ng suggestions will help you prepare for salary negotiations:

HOW TO NEGOTIATE

• Research the compensation levels of the employer and its competitors. In doing so, you will have the facts necessary to negotiate effectively and increase your bargaining power.

• Assess your own worth to the prospective employer. Cons ider your ski ll level, years of experience, and degree of expertise.

• Investigate the employer's track record for making offers. Perhaps the employer consistently makes offers that are lower or higher than its competitors.

• Know your "bottom line" figure. Bear in mind your monthly living expenses which will be deducted from your earnings.

WHEN TO NEGOTIATE

• Whenever possible, do not disclose your salary expectations until you receive an offer and never disclose a figure until you have conducted the appropriate research.

• If you find yourself in a situation where the employer tells you "we 're interested, how much will it take for you to jo in us?" your best tactic is to try to deflect their attempt to get you to disclose a figure. Consider the following response, "Money is important to me, but it is not the most important thing. I' m confident that if we both agree the job is a good fit for me, we can reach an agreement."

• If the employer persists, you may be best served by offering a salary range that you uncovered in your research for a simi lar position in a similar·sized firm in the community.

• Remember your "bottom line" figure when taking the salary range approach. The minimum number in the range should at least reflect the minimum amount you can afford to accept.

• Don't be afraid to negotiate. You are a lawyer and the firm will expect it.

• Employers often look for signs of discomfort when addressing salary matters. Stay calm, maintain eye contact, and answer questions as briefly as poss ible. Talking too much during negotiation may indicate that you are nervous or unsure of yourself-hold your ground.

• When you want a highcr salary, don't reject the offer. In stead, respectfully and confidently give a reason for why you should get more. Point our your qualifications, experience, or your potential to bring in new clients if applicable. If necessary. argue that the offered salary is lower than the community's going rate for attorneys of your experience at simi lar~sized firms.

• If negotiating for a higher salary fails, request additional perks or benefits, such as an end·of·year bonus based on your performance, paid sick·leave, relocation costs, or professional dues. Don't let them pick and choose these perks for you; devise your own opt ional package beforehand.

Remember to see the Career and Professional Development (CPO) Office for salary surveys of recent graduates and those conducted by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP).
