The Western Alphabet The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in other countries, originated in the Middle East. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoenicians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds. The Phoenician A was aelph, which means ‘bull’ and it was made from a little picture of a bull’s head. The letter B was beth which meant ‘house’, and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria. The Phoenicians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The Greeks also started to use the Phoenician alphabet. They changed the names so aelph and beth became alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. If you know any Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull. Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years. 16. What is the purpose of this text?

A. To tell something of Phoenician history. B. To tell the story of why we write as we do.

C. To compare the western alphabet with others. D. To describe the history of the Greek alphabet.

17. Which change did the Greeks make to the Phoenician alphabet? A. They put a curve on the letter A. B. They changed the pictures to sounds.

C. They turned the letters in a different direction. D. They altered the shape of the letters

18. Where did the Phoenicians come from originally? A. Carthage. B. Gades.

C. The Middle East. D. All over the Mediterranean.

19. The information in the text is meant to be A. Interesting. B. Useful.

C. Funny. D. Historic.

20. Which picture, according to the text, represents beth.

Section 2 Questions 6 – 10 You are going to read a newspaper article. Five sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (6-10). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

Mrs Hart – Amateur Theatre Critic Elisabeth Hart went to the theatre in London 55 times last year. She read 55 programmes, saw 55 curtains rise and ate an undisclosed number of ice creams. On top of that, she had to write page after page of notes on each visit. However, she is not a professional theatre critic. She is an ordinary member of the public on the judging panel of this year’s British Theatre Awards.

Mrs Hart was one of four theatre-lovers chosen to judge all new drama productions (excluding musicals) last year. (6)........................................ Mrs Hart thinks this was a good system. ‘It’s important to have amateurs playing a part in the decisions,’ she says. ‘It stops the awards appearing to have been fixed like some others. And if a play wins an award, the public know that it’s been approved by people with no axe to grind.’

Mrs Hart is extremely enthusiastic about the theatre. ‘The year before last I went to over 30 plays,’ she says, ‘and they were a complete mixed bag.’ (7)........................................ It began with an application form left on a foyer shelf by the Society of London Theatre, which organises the awards. She filled it in, added a short theatre review, and was selected from several hundred applicants.

‘They were looking for people with a very wide taste in theatre,’ she explains. ‘I always enjoyed acting in plays when I was young, and as a student in London, I regularly bought cheap standing tickets for West End productions.’ Being a judge was hard work, though. In one week alone, her duties involved her reviewing as many as seven plays. In one week alone, her duties involved her reviewing as many as seven plays. ‘But I never got sick of it. Even the plays I didn’t like always had some redeeming qualities.’

She could never sit back and relax, though, because she had to make hefty notes on everything. (8)........................................ ‘It wasn’t just the actors we were judging, but also costume design, direction, lighting and script – twelve categories in all. But I still enjoyed it. It felt like an enormous privilege.’

In this situation there is surely a danger of the professional critics dominating the discussions. ‘That didn’t happen at all. It was all very civilised and friendly,’ says Mrs Hart. ‘We were listened to and our votes were all equal.’ Theatre critics, of course, are known for their power to make or break a play.

(9)........................................ ‘I wasn’t treated differently at all, although one receptionist did optimistically describe me as looking as if I was keen to enjoy my evening.’

(10)........................................ ‘It is bursting with talent on all fronts, from playwriting to direction, and there are plenty of innovative developments in productions. I personally think new writing should be encouraged. But overall, theatre is definitely alive and kicking.’

A. Having to take this approach meant that she couldn’t let her concentration slip at any time.

B. Regular theatre-goers usually disagree with some of their judgments, of course, and Mrs Hart is no exception.

C. They were part of a panel that also included five professional theatre critics.

D. Her appointment was therefore something of a dream come true for her.

E. The experience has left Mrs Hart optimistic about the state of British theatre.

F. So did management show her enormous respect?

Christmas is Coming – All the Way from China by John Vidal

Christmas is coming this year on the biggest ship in the world from China. Mountains of crackers, toys and games as well as decorations, wrapping paper, food and every imaginable gift are on the way to Felixstowe, Suffolk, on the Emma Maersk 3.

If anything happens to this 400m-long, 61 metre-high boat then Christmas might have to be cancelled. It is delivering 3,000 giant containers for Britain. These containers have the largest amount of Christmas goods ever delivered. Crackers, poker tables, bingo sets, electronic toys and pre-school building blocks will be delivered in amazing quantities: 1,886,000 Christmas decorations are loaded in one container, 40,000 rechargeable batteries and 22,280kg of Vietnam tea in another.

There are things to cook with, leather sofas to sit on, and pyjamas to go to bed in. Pets will be very happy; 138,000 tins of cat food and mountains of dogwood are on their way. But the ship and its cargo was the subject of an intense argument over the increasing number of imports from China. Caroline Lucas said it was a “microcosm of globalisation gone mad”. “All these goods could have been made in Europe,” said Ms Lucas “China now dominates many sectors of global trade. The real cost of the goods that the Emma Maersk is bringing in should include the environment, the markets destroyed in developing countries and the millions of jobs lost.” Britain exported more than £2.8bn of goods to China last year but imported nearly £16bn – 30 times more than in 1980. The UK is Europe’s third-biggest trading partner with China but represents less than 2% of China’s trade with the world.

The Emma Maersk is carrying about 11,000 containers and is the largest container ship in history. The ship left from Yentian port, which now exports around 30,000 containers every day.

Last year Ms Lucas led an EU study into trade with China and was terrified by its implications. “Europe made these goods in the past. China is a country that now has a big advantage in more and more sectors. This is a triumph for multinational capital. It’s not a triumph for Chinese workers, who suffer from some of the worst labour exploitation in the world and are also losing many jobs.” she said.
