MBUZINI - Thirty years after the death of Mozambican president Samora Machel, the legacy of his life and work still lives on in the memory of South African and Mozambican people.

This was evident on Monday as people burst into song in remembrance during a grand memorial ceremony at the Samora Machel Monument in Mbuzini.

Machel and 35 people died when their plane crashed into a hillside in Mbuzini on October 19, 1986, on their way from a summit in Zambia. Seven people survived.

Cultural groups from both countries sang and danced joyfully as guests arrived in numbers to grace the occasion.

The day commenced with the ceremonial salute by the deputy president of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, and the prime minister of Mozambique, Mr Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, and was followed

by an emotional wreath laying by the dignitaries, families of the martyrs of Mbuzini and the survivors.

“Although it happened 30 years ago, it feels like yesterday to my sister and myself, orphans, widows and millions of Mozambicans,” said Samora Machel Jr.

Those who attended, cheered as the various speakers refl ected on how Machel selfl essly fought for the liberation of his people and spoke how much of a great leader the fi rst president of independent Mozambique was and how his work had contributed greatly to the current freedom.

“This memorial must remind the people and leaders of our countries that there is no place in independent Africa that should continue to be at war,” said Ramaphosa.

He stated that it should remind people that revolution should remain a way of life as we struggle to break free from the clutches of poverty, inequality and underdevelopment.

“It is a memorial that must inspire the young people from our countries to make use of opportunities available to them.”

The deputy president remarked that the tragedy that happened in Mbuzini has created a bond between Mozambique and South Africa that can never be broken and

is a constant reminder never to take freedom for granted.

“These bonds were forged in the crucible of struggle against colonial domination. They are bonds that were nourished by the blood of our martyrs,” said Ramaphosa.

Do Rosario thanked South Africa for

the support, collaboration and joint organisation on the ceremony and expressed appreciation to the people of Mbuzini for living together and for taking care of the historical site for both South Africa and Mozambique.

“This audience here in this ceremony is the testimony of this long walk and the typical solidarity which brings together the people of South Africa and Mozambique,” said Do Rosario.

Five of the survivors were also present. “We are also here to commemorate their

lives, their survival and that they are still here as witnesses of what happened here. It is not often that you fi nd people who have survived a plane crash, we are eternally grateful that they remain alive 30 years later,” said Ramaphosa.

Graça Machel also celebrated her birthday on October 17 and Mozambicans broke into song in their mother tongue, congratulating her.

Lack of response angers the community anew

KAMHLUSHWA - On Monday community members of Mdladla resorted to violence after the Department of Health did not reply to their memorandum of grievances within the five-day deadline.

The memorandum was handed over to Ehlanzeni District chief health director Mr David Mdluli on October 6 after a march down the main street of the settlement, and the department had until last Thursday to respond.

The group was led by the Mdladla Youth Development (MYD) committee to raise residents’ concerns regarding the renovation of a clinic they say does not exist.

According to documents shown to this journalist, the R10-million project’s aim is to erect prefabricated structures and refurbish the KaMdladla Clinic. Community members say this is impossible, the structure’s contractors are working on is a community hall, and that there is no clinic in Mdladla.

Demands included the construction of a proper community health centre.

According to a MYD member, people vandalised buildings being renovated on the clinic grounds and even looted a nearby

shop of groceries and furniture on Monday night, because they were angry about the lack of feedback from authorities.

The MYD member says the organisation made contact with Mdluli’s office and received feedback to say that the memorandum was received by the department and that it would respond to their memorandum in due course.

“The community members are angry that the department did not respond by deadline, they want a time frame and quicker action. We don’t want this thing to go back to bed, it is a burning issue in the local community,” he stated.

This is the second time these people have resorted to violence over this issue. During a protest action in August, they blocked a main road and clashed with police. Several were arrested.

Community members are urged not to resort to violence as this will lead to arrests, and in some cases criminal convictions.

The MYD hopes to involve other stakeholders, such as community organisations and local political parties, to aid them in its efforts for quality health-care services.

Protect your pets against rabiesMALALANE - Make sure your pet and

your family are safe from rabies by getting your animals vaccinated next week.

The local State Veterinary Services will offer free rabies vaccinations between Monday October 24 and Friday October 28 from 11:00 to 18:00.

On Monday and Tuesday they will set up at the Malelane Library, on Wednesday at the Hectorspruit Vet Office and at the Komatipoort municipal building on Thursday and Friday.

According to the Animal Diseases Act 35 of 1984, people are bound by law to ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies at three months. This should be followed by a second vaccination between one and nine months after the first and then one every year. State vets have regular campaigns where free vaccinations are given, but local ones usually have these vaccinations in stock.

According to the Nkomazi State Veterinary Services, Ehlanzeni District is the most densely rabies-infected region in the country. A total of R70 million is spent annually on treatments and, it is thanks to this, that the number of human deaths in the country has been suppressed. Rabies causes around 57 000 deaths worldwide.

Rabies is a disease transmitted via the saliva of infected animals through bites and contact with broken skin, or if the animal licks your lips or eyes. Symptoms in animals are strange behaviour such as aggressiveness, disorientation or paralysis and excessive salivation. Animals that can get rabies include mammals such as dogs,

cats, bats, mongooses, jackals and even cattle.

If you suspect that you have been bitten by a rabid animal, you should wash the wound thoroughly with water and soap for at least 10 minutes, and immediately seek medical treatment.

Rabies can be fatal if not treated before the symptoms appear. Symptoms in humans are a lot like those of the flu, with

fever, headaches and fatigue, but progress to involve difficulty breathing, disorientation, hyperactivity or paralysis. This is followed by a coma and death within the

first seven days of illness. If you spot an animal you suspect has

rabies, it is important to report it to the nearest SPCA or state vet office, as it can spread fast and infect humans too.

For enquiries or to report a case of rabies, contact the local State Vet offices on 013-780-3018.

Matrics pledge to fl y the school fl ag high

Miss Mpumalanga 2016, Elaine Mkhabela, addresses pupils from Mjokwane Secondary School.

NAAS - Matrics from Mjokwane Secondary School joined others from across the province during a visit from the MEC for education, Reginah Mhaule. They pledged to conduct themselves with integrity and honesty during the coming year-end exams on Friday.

The 2016 matric exams will commence on Monday and end on November 29 and the MEC hoped to encourage pupils at the school, as well as throughout the province, to do their best.

The MEC, her dignitaries and Miss Mpumalanga 2016, Elaine Mkhabela, were warmly welcomed by the school’s pupils and staff.

The pass rate for the school’s class of 2015 dropped from 97,98 per cent of2014 to 87, 54 per cent, but the MEC stated that she believed this year’s matrics could take up the baton and increase the percentage once again.

“As the Mpumalanga Department of Education, we have faith in your abilities to reach the milestone, thus we are here to offer support a to all grade 12 pupils in the province,” she said.

According to the MEC, signing the pledge has caused an increase in the level and dignity of examinations.

Mhaule urged pupils to desist from any act of dishonesty and misconduct and to heed the rules and instructions applicable to writing the National Senior Certifi cate for a credible examination process.

“Our main goal is to re-enforce those rules and regulations by urging you to conduct yourself with honesty and integrity through the signing of the National Senior Certifi cate pledge. This pledge serves as a contract of your conscience,” the MEC said.

She went on to thank teachers and requested communities to create an enabling environment and to support in their efforts to fulfi l their dreams and aspirations after secondary schooling. She also encouraged the members of the community, parents and religious leaders to motivate their children and give them the necessary time and space to study until their last day of examination.

Mhaule advised the pupils to effectively and effi ciently utilise the given time

and space to study and maximise their knowledge and ability.

“The department will continue to offer support programmes such as radio lessons, weekend classes and DStv channel 319,” she added.

The pledge was read out and signed by the

pupils’ representative council members, Nkosiyethu Mashaba (20), and Sindi Dhlamini (17) on behalf of matriculants in the area. Mashaba said he felt proud to represent local matrics and is ready, but also nervous about the upcoming exams.

Dhlamini felt honoured and said everything she had been working towards for the past 12 years, had fi nally arrived. She said she was ready in some of her subjects, but felt a great deal of pressure, as the next exams would determineher future.

“I feel motivated because the MEC chose our school, even after the drop in the results last year. It inspires us to do better and she is expecting a lot from us,” said the grade 12 pupil.

The MEC pledged that they would replace the roofi ng in the schools that were affected by the storm in Nkomazi, including Mjokwane.

Mhaule also handed out sanitary towels to girls, saying she did not want girls missing their exams because of their periods.

She concluded the event with a prayer for strength for all of the matrics in the upcoming events.

In commemoration of World Food Day on October 16, a group of community members, RCL Foods Sugar and Milling and BUCO Malelane, banded together to provide a meal for each pupil at Mhlati primary School. Derek van Niekerk from RCL Foods and representatives of the various groups, handed out the food at the school on Friday morning. They have challenged fellow community members and businesses to better this contribution for next year’s World Food Day.

MALALANE - Elegant wooden art, jewellery, delectable baked goods and loads of other potential Christmas gifts were on display at the quarterly Malalane Market on Hamilton Restaurant’s garden on Saturday.

It was the market’s third birthday and proved as popular as ever. The kids were seen playing, getting their hair sprayed or getting henna art applied, while the parents browsed the stalls or relaxed at Hamilton’s Restaurant.

The market gave crafters from the region the opportunity to showcase their baking or crafting skills, and also gave businesses a chance to promote their goods. Riverview Prep School also had a stall and sold goods produced by local youngsters, from recycled materials collected at the school through their recycling programme. The local beading artist, Sam Ngwaru, once again set up his impressive display of animals, fi gurines and objects. A couple of stall holders stated that it was their fi rst time exhibiting at a market and that they enjoyed engaging with potential clients and were surprised by the people’s responses to their products.

Special economic zone to give Nkomazi major boost

MALALANE - A proposed special economic zone (SEZ) in the area has the potential to make a significant impact on the local community through job creation and skills development, as well as increased foreign investment.

This was the message to local business people and representatives of government departments and institutions during the Mpumalanga leg of the SEZ national roadshow hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) at Pestana Kruger Lodge on October 5.

The SEZ Act was passed into law in February and the roadshow was aimed at informing the local government and private sectors what it entails and how it can benefit their communities.

The department’s view is that industrial development is the only route to sustainable economic prosperity and success. The economy also needs to be diversified to provide strong support for value-added manufacturing.

An agro- and mineral processing, logistics and trade hub is earmarked for Nkomazi and will take advantage of the region’s proximity to neighbouring companies such as Mozambique and Swaziland.

Value chains (processes such as production, marketing and after-sales services) will be formed and

small and medium local enterprises integrated to help improve skills and diversify enterprises.

Through the development of this hub, local infrastructure will be developed and improved and it will lead to job creation and sustainable jobs.

Director of SEZ and economic transformation at dti, Mr Maoto Molefane, told guests that strong leadership and a focused approach was needed for the hub to be successful and to develop quicker.

“Globally, approximately 68 million jobs are in firms located

within SEZs, and Nkomazi SEZ can generate these much-needed jobs for the residents.

“Skill transfer and integration of local firms in key value chains are some of the benefits that the Nkomazi SEZ could bring,” added Molefane.

The key objectives of the zone are to attract direct foreign and domestic investment, build additional industrial hubs and strategic industrial capabilities and to create key value chains across the country.

The Nkomazi hub is currently heading into its planning phase. Molefane stated that infrastructure development, coordinated planning among key government agencies and private sectors were significant to the success of these proposed zones.

Several procedures must be followed to develop an SEZ. The minister of trade and industry

needs to be notified of the intention to apply, which enables planning at a national level.

A concept document outlining the planned development and its intended socio-economic outcomes must be developed.

A pre-feasibility study must be done, then a detailed technical feasibility report detailing factors such as financial, economic, environmental and technical impacts and effects.

Finally a strategic and business plan must be drawn up, detailing implementation and other operational factors.

How to deal with an examination meltdown

KOMATIPOORT - Matrics across the country will be starting year-end exams from Monday and some are extremely nervous about hitting the dreaded blank.

Most of us have sat in front of an exam paper, after many hours of study, then struggle to recall anything about a certain topic or section.

Dr Gillian Mooney from The Independent Institute of Education, says teachers and parents should prepare pupils for the stresses of exams.

Pupils should double-check that they have all their stationery before leaving home. Take an extra pencil and pen and Tippex (if it is allowed) and ensure you have extra tools such as calculators or rulers in your pencil case.

The formal environment of the exam venue can overwhelm pupils and cause them to forget the material they have learned, leading to panic - which only worsens things.

Mooney recommends trying to calm down in the few minutes before the clock starts. Carefully read through all of the instructions once you have received the paper and make sure you check all of the pages. This way you can see what to expect and ensure that you do not miss out on any of the questions.

Mark all of the questions you can answer and start with the easy ones first. This will help build your confidence and give your mind some time to process all of the information.

If you still feel panicked in the

middle of the exam, here are a few steps to follow:

• Do not panic: Take a few deep breaths and try to calm down.

• Calm your mind: Tell yourself that you are calm, studied hard and know your work.

• Tackle the difficult questions again: Go back to the questions you struggled with. Write down anything you can remember about the topic. You can always cross out anything you do not want marked, once you are sure of your answer.

• Visualise: If you cannot remember anything on the topic, think about where you were when you first heard about it or what your notes looked like. Sometimes that helps to spark a memory.

• Reconstruct your memories: If you jotted down notes on the material, read through it and try to form it into a good answer for the question.

• Look at the big picture: Often teachers do not just mark a one-word answer but your method and reasoning behind it. Jotting down anything you remember relating to the topic and question can occasionally earn you a mark or two.

Remember that exam papers aren’t the only things that count towards your year marks. Some subjects have two papers and you may be able to make up some marks by doing better in the next one.

If you do fail a paper, you will still be able to apply to rewrite it and have the opportunity to better your marks and still pass.

Derrick Pretorius was in 2009 Mnr. Laeveld-kompetisie help beoordeel.

Komati aangewys.

Charity Nthetwa is as eerste prinses aangewys en Rozanne Lotter was

tweede prinses en Mej. Fotogenies.

Fotogenies. Taniel Jordaan was Mej. Persoonlikheid.

Pupils had fun splashing their way through the various strokes, but cooler conditions left several shivering in-between items.

The teams all sported swimming caps in their house colours. Some even donned face paint to show their team spirit.

Several records were broken during the course of the afternoon, with the boys proving a superior force in the pool. Robert Butcher improved the record in the u/11 individual medley and backstroke. Last year’s record for the u/11 breaststroke

of 46,37 seconds was broken by Danny Snyman with 39,22 and Butcher with 45,65. Nick de Zwart broke the record in the u/9 breaststroke.

Akademie se Skilpad Rally lok grootste belangstelling ooit

‘n Ekstra R2 796 is ingesamel.
