Introduction

The Scientific Revolution was a period of interest and discovery in many

scientific fields during the Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries. It

replaced religious beliefs with logical explanations made in areas like

astronomy, physics, chemistry, and biology which still influence the world to

this day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hodYUDDfsY

Causes

The Scientific Revolution was caused mainly by the increase of interest in

science spiked by the Renaissance. It was also caused by

• Expansion of Trade: Sailors had navigational problems that need to be solved.

• Universities in which students were encouraged to use reasoning to solve

problems

• Philosophy that aroused interest in logical thinking.

Scientific Method

Was used largely by scientists for the first time during the

scientific revolution. Involved doing experiments in steps:

Question, Hypothesis, Experimentation, Analyze data, Conclusion

Nicolaus Copernicus

• Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who is commonly acknowledged as the founder of modern astronomy.

• Stated that the sun was the center of the universe, not Earth

• Nicolaus Copernicus's knowledge was spread to others and he also set the scene for major advances in science. Copernicus also marked the beginning of a scientific revolution and astronomy.

Galileo Galilei

• The first man to use a telescope to observe the stars, planets, and moons.

• Discovered the principals of inertia.• Built on Copernicus’ theory and said

the Earth revolves around the sun.• Later arrested because his teachings

were against the church.

René Descartes

• Descartes expressed a model closely linked to mathematics. He pushed the notion that all thinking regarding true ideas had to be clear and distinct. He sought for logical discernment of the world on the part of humans who were studying the world around them.

Isaac Newton

• Newton discovered when light is passed through a prism, the light turns into a wide band of colors and called it a spectrum. • Created the first reflecting telescope. • He also made a huge impact on

astronomy by defining the laws of motion and universal gravitation.

Johannes Kepler

• Astronomer who discovered the three laws of planetary motion.

• Contributed to astronomy, physics, math, and health.

• Wrote on how vision occurs, discovered new semiregular polyhedrons, and made new theoretical foundations for astrology.

• He credited the occurrences of science to God and tried to make a balance between reason and religion in his discoveries.
