Kamaria Greenfield, ’14, Davenport CollegeYale Summer Session in Paris, FranceAge of the CathedralsA view up into the transept of the Gothic cathedral at Rouen, France, first builtduring the High Middle Ages. The relatively large windows and skeletalframework are characteristic of these great churches, whose architects used thesupport system of flying buttresses to bring more light into the enormousvaulted spaces. This cathedral was the tallest in the world from 1876 to 1880.

The water ofthe lagoon was fantastically smooth and blue. The volcanoes and people inthe background stood in perfect symmetry with their reflections. This scenewas engraved in my memory along with an overwhelming sense of peaceand perfect harmony.

Alexander Bae, ’14, Branford CollegeYale Summer Session in Quito, EcuadorIntermediate Spanish I & II Tigerwing butterflies await metamorphosis within their golden chrysalises.Thousands more thrive in the safe tranquility of the butterfly sanctuary at La Casadel Suizo, located in Ahuano in the Amazon rainforest, 200 kilometers east ofQuito. To me, the soft luster of these chrysalises exceeds in beauty any piece ofgolden jewelry created by mankind, and serves as a reminder of the magnificenceand fragility of nature, Ecuador’s greatest and most valuable natural resource.

Erica Leh, ‘15, Morse CollegeYale Summer Session in Prague, Czech RepublicIn Kafka’s Spirit: Film & Fiction Cesky Krumlov, one of the many destinations of our weekend trips, epitomizeslife in the outskirts of the Czech Republic. Unlike in the heart of Prague, thenarrow cobblestone streets here see few cars, and the steeping castles provideimmaculate views of quaint village life. Our group visited many of the shopslining the Vltava River selling old Communist propaganda—a reminder of theconflict that governed twentieth century Czech life before the Velvet Revolution.

Andrew Sobotka,‘15, Jonathan Edwards CollegeYale Summer Session in St. Petersburg, RussiaThird Year Russian Language and Culture This picture was taken at midnight at the Marsovo Polye (Field of Mars) behind theRussian Museum in St. Petersburg. The period at the beginning of the summer iscalled the “White Nights” because the sun doesn’t really ever set – it reaches a sort of“twilighty” darkness but the sun never fully sets. This picture perfectly captures thebeautiful essence of the White Nights.

Rachel Rothberg, ’14, Pierson College Yale Summer Session in BrazilElementary Portuguese for Romance Language SpeakersRio de Janeiro, BrazilRocinha, Brazil’s largest favela (shantytown), is built into the hillsides of Rio deJaneiro’s wealthy Zona Sul and incongruously neighbors the golf clubs of the city’srichest inhabitants. Though efforts have been made to improve the infrastructure, educational opportunities, and overall quality of life in the neighborhood,Rocinha still depicts the country’s ongoing socioeconomic problems.Nevertheless, despite the harsh realities of favela life, Rocinha’s inhabitantsembody the characteristic Brazilian buoyancy, vivacity, and passion for life.

The cafesspilled out onto the old cobblestone streets, the walls were paintedevery shade imaginable, the doors were covered in graffiti, and therewas a clash between the desire to cater to tourism and the pride ofholding true to native Italian menus. We walked by this restaurantevery day and enjoyed our last meal in Rome at these tables.

Horse-drawn carriages, bicyclists, and old menwith giant carts of Brazilian sweets fill the narrow streets and maneuver acrossthe irregular cobblestones in the city center. Brightly colored lattices inspiredby indigenous designs adorn the cream adobe buildings with red tiled roofs. The most magical moment comes twice each day when the tides rise, thesaltwater creeps into the low city streets, and transforms the city into a quaint, colonial Venice.
