Notes &Quotes

Samantha MartinSince releasing her latest album “Run To Me” last April (2018), Samantha

Martin has been on a rising trajectory. The album has reached #1 on the Roots Radio Report, surfaced on the charts in the United Kingdom, and been met with favourable reviews around the World. It’s a lofty proclamation to say that Martin’s career is ascending; she was a semi-finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2017, has been nominated three consecutive years for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. She’s also garnered four Maple Blues Awards nominations in 2016 after Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar released “Send The Nightingale”. Understanding the weight of the aforementioned, this edition of Notes & Quotes features what Samantha Martin has to say about her new album, as well as what it is like to be one of the featured artists at the upcoming Women’s Blues Revue.

The conversation with Martin started with the undeniable being discussed first; that the latest album “Run To Me” is an obvious sign of growth. It was mentioned to Martin that the growth was well noticed in the songwriting, the musicianship and overall sense of teamwork on this latest offering. When asked if there was an epiphany respecting the workings of the group that spawned growth, or if there was something else that captured what was already there, Martin says;

“I think it was a combination of a few things. The band has been touring and playing together for a long time – it’s almost like a musical telepathy that we have now, and it makes the music tight. We know where each other is going musically without having to really think about it, so that makes for stronger music. I also wanted to take a more soul-based approach to this album. I did some co-writing with Curtis (Chaffey), and it helped push that. Working with Darcy Yates on this project (Yates was the producer) really offered me the opportunity to “let go” and focus on making some really good music too. Personal growth from life experiences offered a lot of material for this album as well – when you elevate yourself as a person, it’s easier to be in a better headspace for writing and creativity.”.

In support of “Run To Me”, Samantha Martin is about to embark on a ten country tour in 2019, the shows will feature Canada and Europe exclusively, and will continue for three months. Of note, Martin is slated to perform an impressive 75 shows within the scheduled tour, and each show will feature a full band performance. In the interim, Martin will be touring in Ontario in various locations - Owen Sound, Westport, and Quebec – before she makes her way to Toronto for the show of note: The Women’s Blues Revue. The Women’s Blues Revue will take place on November 16th at Roy Thomson Hall this year, marking the 32nd annual event. As one of the featured artists at the all-star event, Martin was asked about how it feels to be performing at the upcoming show;

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be asked to join the Women’s Blues Revue this year, given the abundance of female talent in Canada, that I’ve been chosen for a second time. I’m looking forward to the prospect of seeing new faces in years to come too – there is a great opportunity for female artists to shine at this event – I am proof that if you keep pursuing your passion, these kinds of opportunities can present themselves.”.

As the conversation drew to a close, one final question, true to Notes & Quotes form, was left for Martin, asking her what it is she would like fans and new listeners alike to know about the artist behind the music. Without hesitation, she left us with this :“I want people to know that I take no prisoners. I feel everything, and I stand by everything I do. I am a straight shooter, and I think people appreciate that authenticity.”

This is what the TBS office looked like while repairs were underway following the August 7 flood which affected all the tenants on the basement floor of the Artscape building where we have had our HQ for many years. Things are (mostly) back to normal and Office Manager Huma Uster is no longer taking care of business from a perch at the neighbourhood coffee shop. Damages are still being assessed and many items (including precious archives) have been lost or damaged. It's a good moment to consider making a donation to your favourite blues society so that we can keep the blues alive in Toronto. Lindsay Beaver Tough As Love Alligator/Fontana North/Universal

Halifax-born Lindsay Beaver was the irrepressible drummer/vocalist/leader with the 24th Street Wailers, a quartet of then graduating Humber College students who lived at that address in town. The band won an MBA for New Artist in 2013 and was subsequently nominated three times for Entertainer Of The Year. Ms. Beaver was nominated twice for Drummer Of The Year. Their album Wicked was nominated for the Blues JUNO in 2015. After several visits, Ms. Beaver wanted to move to Austin, Texas. Not everyone agreed with the move and the band broke up. Ms. Beaver now resides there and as this album shows, she has done very well. This is especially apparent in her vocals, which label prez Bruce Iglauer calls: ‘full of unvarnished emotion and power’. Iglauer also says ‘she’s like the love child of Amy Winehouse and Little Richard’ and he is seldom wrong. In a program of ‘50s and ‘60s R&B and blues, we start in straight blues mode with an original, “You’re Evil”, an uptempo rocker with upfront harp from Dennis Gruenling and searing guitar from Brad Stivers. The first single is “Too Cold To Cry”, an excellent R&B breakup song with a powerful vocal from Ms. Beaver and a lovely piano solo from Marcia Ball. “Don’t Be Afraid Of Love” is an old school rock n’ roll winner, a duet with Stivers that is impossibly fast. Marcia Ball plays some rocking piano here too. Slim Harpo’s “Got Love if you Want It” fits right in to the vibe on this disc, a spot-on version with Gruenling on harp. “Dangerous” is a perfect example of her ‘swagger and take-no-prisoners confidence’ - you don’t want to cross her. Angela Strehli’s “Lost Cause” is a solid slow blues that allows Beaver to show some tenderness as well in a particularly

Up Your Mind” are just two more excellent examples of his trademark updating of that 50’s West Coast blues sound. As he says in his press release, each new one is better than the last – truth in advertising. Go to www.kennybluesboss.com to find out where he’s going next.

Layla Zoe Gemini Alive

After twelve albums in her twenty-year career, nine of them with various record labels, Layla Zoe decided she wanted to go back to being an independent artist, with no one in charge but her. The result is a two-disc set, one acoustic (Fragility) and one electric (Courage). She did keep her musical collaborator of the last several years, guitarist Jan Laacks who sets her lyrics to music and is very good at it. As prolific as always, all twenty songs here are new, with Fragility featuring several songs that are much closer to traditional blues than is usual for her. “I’ll Be Reborn Blues” is a slide-driven uptempo track about her partner helping her find a new way forward. Less traditional but still slide-driven is “Turn This Into Gold”, which also has a drummer and electric slide, a stream-of-consciousness tale of being an immigrant, in this case presumably as a Canadian in Germany. Laacks channels Robert Johnson for “The Deeper They Bury Me”, dedicated to one of the Angola Three, Herman Wallace, who spent 41 years in solitary in Angola Prison, dying a few days after his release. “(Looking For) The Good Life” (that her father never had), is a very good blues, well sung. Disc 2 (Courage) continues in her recent, heavily electric vein, after all, her nickname is ‘Firegirl’. “Dark World” is a bluesy look at child sex slavery, male and female, with the hope that these young lives might possibly be saved. “Ghost Train” tackles the story of someone who just received a large inheritance but isn’t ready for it. “Gemini” is the funky summary of the entire package, the Gemini sign and her, set to a powerful funky groove. The Las Vegas mass shooting and why is the subject of “Automatic Gun”. Laacks doubles on bass and overdubbed guitars with Dirk Sengotta on drums. Quite a lot of studio wizardry is also

accomplished vocal. “She’ll Be Gone” is a striking 50’s rocker, with Mike Farrell on piano. Originally by one Betty O’Brien in 1961, this is a real find and a keeper of a performance! Stivers is extraordinary on guitar throughout, with Josh Williams providing sterling support on bass. Laura Chavez and Eve Monsees add guest spots on guitar. It would appear that the Wailers served her needs for a while and that it was time to move on. It’ll be fascinating after this stellar effort to see where she goes next. Tough As Love will be released on October 12th. Ms. Beaver returns to this side of the border with this band in November but only to the West Coast, her web site is www.lindsaybeaver.com.

Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne Inspired By The Blues Stony Plain/Warner

For his fourth album for Stony Plain, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne (Spruell) wanted to include tributes to the late Fats Domino and to Ray Charles. He also wanted to bring back a more classic style of blues. And he starts out in classic Chicago mode with a tough slow blues featuring Billy Branch on harp: “I Knew I’d Be Playing The Blues” fills us in on a bit of his life story. Branch also helps out on the attractive “That Girl Needs Help”. The tribute to Fats Domino is an original by Wayne called “Mr. Blueberry Hill” and a fine one it is, giving a little history and incorporating as many song titles as he could. The tribute to Ray is a lovely performance at the end from a show in Mexico by the hard-touring Wayne: “Georgia On My Mind” features a lovely vocal and an electric piano, the local players accompany very well. The bulk of the disc is a set originals backed mostly by his fine band: Russell Jackson on bass, Joey DiMarco on drums, Yuji Ihara on guitars, Dave Babcock on saxes and Bob Tildesley on trumpet. Lynne Chwyl provides background vocals. The Boogie Woogie Hall Of Fame member doesn’t disappoint on the first single, “Start Rockin’” which does indeed rock, with fine horns and a soaring solo from frequent collaborator Duke Robillard over that boogie piano. “Jimmy and Johnny”, a tale of a friendship tested by one girl, and “Make

used on this disc. These new songs obviously mean a great deal to her as she sings with even more than her usual intensity and passion - the two sides of Layla Zoe then, acoustic & fragile and fiery & courageous. She’ll have plenty of new material for her live shows but several of the songs here should have parental advisory stickers. An extensive tour of Germany is at her web site, www.laylazoe.com, but no Canadian ones yet.

JW-Jones Live Solid Blues/Outside

Watching a JW-Jones show is a forceful reminder of the value of showmanship. Built around his ‘lightning in a bottle’ guitar playing and careful song selection, he’s an international touring machine and has consistently placed his albums on the Billboard Blues Charts. This new album, recorded in La Basoche-Centre Culturel du Vieux Aylmer, Quebec, features the road band: this year’s MBA bassist winner Laura Greenberg, Will Laurin on drums and Don Cummings on Hammond organ. Somewhat unusually, the songs here are not from any earlier albums, another indication of how much planning went into this. This choice involves a selection of modern takes on traditional blues along with some favourite songs by contemporaries. Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite wrote “I Don’t Believe A Word You Say” for their Get Up! Album, JW-Jones adds a stunning guitar solo. Wolf’s “Moanin’ At Midnight” gets stretched to over nine minutes with his guitar prowess and introduces his penchant for quoting other songs in his solos, a device that makes the concluding “I Might Not Come Home At All/Medley” the climax to which the show has been building. Seventeen songs are quoted here, all of them properly credited. Being audio only, we don’t of course see his bandmates walk over to help him play his guitar but it is a highlight of his stage show. There is also plenty of time for just singing songs: Robert Cray’s “A Memo (Nothin’ but Love)” is particularly fine as is The 5 Royales’ “Catch That Teardrop”. BB King’s “Early Every Morning” gets a jazzy workout. An almost solo, slowed down version of Jimmy

Rogers’ “That’s Alright” is another major highlight, with not an extra note anywhere. As you read this they are touring the USA with a stop at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. For us, this live version of the show will have to do until they get here. Check out www.jw-jones.com for that info and much more.

Jenie Thai Night On Fire Self

Pianist/singer/songwriter Jenie Thai has been based here for a couple of years now, having established her career in Edmonton and points west. She’s a blues-based barrelhouse piano player with a knack for pop balladry. She’s also a member of the TBS Musicians Advisory Council and has played several TBS events. This is her second album and features a mix of well-written original Stax-styled R&B and ballads. She’s backed by Brooke Blackburn on guitar, Duane Blackburn on Hammond organ, Andrew Scott on drums, Andrew Stewart on bass, Neil Braithwaite on tenor, Joe Auty on trumpet plus backup singers Claire Doyle & Joanna Mohammed-Gonzalez. The title song begins: “Night On Fire” is rocking horn-led invitation to join her as she lights up the town. There’s some fine piano and a soaring guitar solo from Brooke. “Sugar” slows things down only slightly as she promises to be the solution to all his problems. It’s a keeper too. “Dreamers and Lovers” is the first single and the lead off ballad, a remarkably attractive song about being alone in the city. Back to R&B dance floor fillers with “Do You Feel The Way I Do?”, with a roaring Braithwaite sax solo. Slower again but fine R&B is “Who’s That Girl (On Your Arm?)”. Another highlight is the wonderfully titled “I Can’t Keep The Rain From Falling Down”, a jazzy tune with Jenie on Rhodes. Excellent songs, a distinctive singer, a fine band, what more do you want? If you see this in time you can get to her CD Release party at Hugh’s Room on Saturday, September 29, with a nine-piece band and special guests Jane Siberry and Dala. Otherwise keep up to date at www.jeniethai.ca, but it shows she’s headed back out west through October.

Mark Hummel Harpbreaker Electro-Fi/Outside

Little Walter & Walter Horton pushed the harp instrumental to legendary heights, raising the bar for all who came after. One listen to this collection shows Mark Hummel has met that challenge. On a disc of career highlights, it’s difficult to be selective but his own "Harpoventilatin'" leads off and it’s the live one from Blues Harmonica Blowouts: Still Here and Gone; “The Creeper Returns” is by Aaron “Little Sonny” Willis; the Hummel original “Billy’s Boogaloo” refers to guitarist Billy Flynn; a tribute to mentor Charlie Musselwhite is a stunning version of his “Christo Redentor” and there’s a lovely acoustic version of “See See Rider” with just Rusty Zinn on guitar. Of the showcases here, six are from his earlier Electro-Fi albums and seven are previously unheard, either new recordings or outtakes from those earlier albums. This last sentence was for you harmonica completists only because everyone else will just be enjoying the playing. With a recent harmonica compilation, Hard Core Harp that also included Hummel, you might think that label head Andrew Galloway loves harp records and you’d be right. That Hummel now gets one all to himself is surely deserved. His illustrious career so far is documented at www.markhummel.com.

Correction:

In my last column I wrote that Terry Blersh has a day job as an accountant - not correct. He does help other musicians with their income tax returns but otherwise is a full time musician. In addition to his own shows, he is featured in several of Lance Anderson’s Revues, including the Last Waltz and Mad Dogs and Englishmen ones. He is currently arranging a Release Party for Play It All Day, check our club listings for that, you’ll want to be there.

When and how did you start volunteering for TBS? As I’m not a musician, it’s likely that I was approached w h i l e b e a m i n g enthusiastically from a front row somewhere. Actually, I attended Brian Blain’s live-to-tape recording of his New Folk Blues album at Reba’s Cafe back in 2010, and we chatted then about possible involvement in Toronto Blues Society. Today I’m still volunteering and Brian’s still continuously re-working that album!

True thing, it’s the one he calls his “living album”.

My main task at TBS is to encourage artists and venues to input their listings. I then pick up slack by scouring for upcoming shows across Southern Ontario for our weekly news blast.

As audience members, we’re so accustomed to a smorgasbord of shows on our devices and hopefully it doesn’t make us indifferent. Remember the days of poring over the fine-print of weekly local rags for concert listings (and venues cringing when someone came to a cancelled gig, stating “You’re listed here as having a 2pm solo matinee” while waving newsprint? Yeah, I may have been waving that ad). For most, life’s busy, and genre-specific online listings are a resource that ups the chance we’ll get up and see live music.

Tell us about a treasured memory? Hmm, can I have a treasured M.O.? A decade back, my enthusiast friend and I would only see our favourite Toronto artists outside of Toronto. We’d be day-tripping all the time: Kitchener, Cobourg, Scugog, wherever. We became familiar with the Southern Ontario blues circuit and whether it was a rural church hall, Legion, restaurant with stage and dance floor or the town theatre, well, you’d really be witnessing a scene, and those I consider treasured memories. Other fans do the circuit, too... you begin to recognise faces!

Musicians are nuanced; you may luck out and catch a sweet acoustic version of their signature powerhouse tune if it suits the venue.

I don’t know who I admire more sometimes, the talent or the virtuous venue owners. Once, out in the west GTA, a venue owner opened the night by reading out a 1-Star review he received of his listening room (kinda like actors reading mean tweets). It seemed that an indignant guest had reported that while chatting over drinks at the bar, the owner approached their group asking that they be respectful of the musicians, or could choose to leave. Reading on, it seems the group decided they’d do just that, leave, declaring they’d never return to that establishment again. We laughed our heads off.

Most memorable TBS concert moment?

So, it must be a TBS event, eh? That’s a shameless plug, guys. I’d say one magical moment to be sure was Colin Linden at the 2016 Maple Blues Awards performing Rich In Love. The awards...jovial in general, then enters Colin under moody lighting and performs the achingly slow tune, his steel guitar twangs seemingly hang in the air, "Now I’m goin’ down down down to find some healing…” I didn’t even know what I was feeling. Awe, likely. Surely memorable (and surely the blues!).
