Today’s Storylines

Big TenThis is the first of two meetings for Rice with

members of the Big Ten this season. The Owlsalso play at Northwestern on Nov. 12.

Overall, the Owls are 5-15 against the BigTen (not including a 0-2 mark against PennState and a 0-1 mark vs. Nebraska since thosegames occurred before either team joined theleague). Rice has played every member of theconference except for Illinois and Iowa.

Rice has dropped six straight to Big Ten op-ponents since defeating Northwestern 40-34 inEvanston during the 1997 season.

The Owls’ last win at home over a Big 10school came in 1990 when the Owls defeatedNorthwestern 31-14.

Rice vs. PurdueRice trails the all-time series against Purdue

(1-2), with the Boilermakers having won thelast two contests, including a 21-19 win atWest Lafayette in the most recent meeting(Sept. 12, 1998).

The Owls won the initial meeting in 1934and that win provided the stage for Bill Wallaceto go on and become Rice’ first All-American.

Wallace rushed for 89 yards and threw atouchdown pass to John McCauley. The Owlswould go on to win their first SWC title thatseason with a 9-1 record and finished 5th in thenational polls under first-year coach JimmyKitts. Purdue blanked the Owls 24-0 on Octo-ber 4, 1958 in the only previous meeting be-tween the two schools at Rice Stadium.

Challenging ScheduleRice is the only FBS school to play four non-

conference opponents from BCS automatic-qualifying conferences during the 2011 season.

Among their C-USA peers, Marshall, Tulsaand ECU will each play three while SMU, Tu-lane and UAB have a pair of games againstleague-member schools from automatic-quali-fying conferences of the BCS.

Road games at Big 12-member schools Texasand Baylor bookend an early-schedule slatewhich also includes the home opener against

Purdue from the Big Ten. Rice will also play onthe road at Big Ten member Northwestern laterin the season.

The Owls will face six teams who earnedbowl berths last season (Baylor, Northwestern,SMU, Southern Miss, Tulsa and UTEP).

A Special PairRice senior punter Kyle Martens, and redshirt

sophomore kicker Chris Boswell picked upwhere they left off in 2010, providing Rice oneof the top special teams’ tandems in the country.

Martens, a consensus preseason All-Confer-ence USA selection as well as a returning AFCAAll-America, averaged 48.4 and placed a pair ofhis boots inside the 10 yard line. A 2010 RayGuy Award semifinalists, Martens is the Owls’career record holder for punting average andhas placed 24 of his last 57 punts inside the 20(42 percent) and 13 of those 24 have beendowned inside the 10.

Chris Boswell made three field goals

against Texas last weekend.

Boswell booted three field goals in the gameand also made his debut handling the Owls’kickoff chores. His three field goals were oneshy of his career-best effort at North Texas in2010 and raised his career total to 14, movinghim into a tie for eighth on the Rice career list. Two of his four kickoffs went for touchbacks, while the other two were returned for a total of33 yards.

On the night, the Horns average starting po-sition after Rice kickoffs was the Texas 21. Lastyear opponents’ average starting position wasthe Rice 30.

First TimersA total of 10 Owls made their Rice debuts in

the opener against Texas, with nine of thoseplayers appearing in a college game for the firsttime. Five were redshirt freshmen (Bryce Calla-han, Nico Carlson, Drew Carroll, Mario Hull

and Zach Patt); two were redshirt sophomores(Andre Gautreaux and Josh Skinner); two weretrue freshmen (Jaylon Finner and MalcolmHill). Kyle Prater also made his Rice debut, buthad appeared in a pair of games for LSU in2009 before transferring to Rice in the summerof 2010. Cameron Nwosu, making his firststart, led the Owls with 12 tackles.

Depth in NumbersThe Owls used just two true freshmen in the

opener, the fewest first-year players who madetheir debut in the opener during Bailiff’s tenure.

A Long-Running Tradition

Each day in the office of running backscoach Rick LaFavers, the combined talentthat makes up the deep corps of backs

who will carry the football for Rice in 2011 gathertogether to view the video of their latest efforts onthe field, with only one rule. No one is off limits.

They are five talents. Five individuals who,in combination, give the Owls as deep and tal-ented a collection of rushers as fans have seenin quite a while. Five explosive competitorswith unblinking confidence in their ability tohandle any challenge thrown their way.

But they also are five parts of a greaterwhole, each dedicated to seeing their fourbrothers in arms improve as well in order totake the Owls back to a date in the postseason.Part of that process is film study, and thepointed barbs that fly freely spare no one in thedrive to constantly improve.

“They all pull for each other,” LaFavers said.“But they all critique each other, everybody inthe room is fair game, including me.”

What sounds good natured to each other, might sound less so to an untrained ear, butLaFavers only hears the soundtrack of fivemen who care deeply about each other andabout improving.

“When I first started coaching the runningbacks I was concerned about the morale andcompetition among (them),” LaFavers said.“(Things like) worrying who would be gettingthe most carries. But they have done a great jobof not making that an issue at all. They do agreat job, there is no jealousy. Each of them ishappy when the other has success. They feedoff and rely on each other.”

LaFavers’ stable of runners can deliver oppo-nents a quick, surgical strike, or deliver blowafter pounding blow in succession. Such is thenature of the modern offense that a variety ofweapons is a prerequisite, and the Owls in 2011are truly blessed.

Junior Sam McGuffie faced the impossibletask of living up to the glittering legend of hishigh school career in suburban Houston aftertransferring home to Rice. When the final gunsounded the end of the 2010 season, McGuffiewas one of just three players in the country tofinish with more than 880 yards rushing and380 yards receiving. Senior Tyler Smith pro-vided his steady leadership and dependabilityfor a second straight year after returning from asevere knee injury in 2007. Junior Charles Rossscored 11 total touchdowns as a freshman andshowcased the formidable speed he blends with

a 6-foot-1, 230-pound frame both at runningback and returning kicks. Redshirt sophomoreTurner Petersen proved his spring breakout wasno fluke, while true sophomore Jeremy Edding-ton ran wild down the stretch to lead the teamin 2010 with 10 rushing touchdowns.

“We’re very fortunate all have different skillsets that they bring to work each day,” LaFaverssaid. “(McGuffie), with his speed, can go zero to60 in a hiccup and hit a home run at any time.(Smith) is the steady senior who has great visionand patience. We call him Mighty Mouse becausehe is the strongest of any of them. Then we haveWaste Management, as they bill themselves(Ross, Petersen and Eddington). They are all big,but still have good speed. (Eddington) and(Ross) can run with anyone, but they all are 220(pounds)-plus. It gives the defense a lot of prob-lems. They are our best athletes and we are al-ways working on ways to get them on the field.”

The fact that both Eddington and Petersenwere high school quarterbacks only opens upmore options within the loose structures andrapid tempos of college football offenses in the21st century.

The potential is unlimited, but LaFavers isquick to remind his charges that situations canchange in the blink of an eye, and each of thefive needs to be ready to shoulder a greater load.

“I told them last year that it was going to takeall of us, it wasn’t going to be about just one ortwo,” LaFavers said. “Last year was the first yearin a long time that every back made it throughthe season healthy. We rotate them and it savessome of the pounding. You see the pros doingthat more and more. It’s no longer that one fea-ture back. It helps keep them fresh to keep oneof them from taking all the pounding.

“There is no real drop off. The nice thing iswe trust them all and each can go in and playin any of our packages.”

A fixture on the Gulf Coast sports scene since it made its debut in 1950, historic Rice Sta-dium will celebrate its 61st birthday in 2011. The venerable facility opened its gates forthe first time when the Owls hosted Santa Clara on September 30, 1950, and has main-

tained a reputation as a stadium designed first and foremost with the football fan in mind, featuringunmatched sightlines, open concourses and ample parking.

This fan-friendly aspect continues each game day with the tradition of fans coming onto thefield to form the spirit lines to welcome the Owls as they run on to the field.

Originally built as a replacement for the 37,000-seat stadium that was located on the corner ofUniversity and Main (a portion of which remains as the grandstand for Rice’s track and soccer fa-cility), Rice Stadium quickly became a showplace for college football, hosting the top teams in theSouthwest Conference in addition to the Bluebonnet Bowl.

In 1974, Rice Stadium earned a unique distinction of being one of the few on-campus collegefacilities to host the Super Bowl, as the Miami Dolphins downed the Minnesota Vikings.

It was the setting for President John F. Kennedy’s historic speech in 1962 in which he outlinedthe challenge to Americans to develop their manned space program and send a man to the moon.

The original configuration has been modified several times. In 2006, the structure entered anew era with the installation of a new in-game entertainment and information system, includinga new scoreboard and video display system and a new sound system, in addition to the installationof a FieldTurf playing surface.

That same year, the worn and splintered wooden benches were replaced with metalbenches, and those in the end zones were covered with blue tarps, creating the current seatingcapacity of 47,000.

Rice Stadium, which hosted Super Bowl VIII in 1974, is celebrating its 61st season as the

home for Owls football.

From its inception nearly 100 years ago, RiceUniversity has been dedicated to creatingunconventional wisdom: preparing out-

standing students for diverse careers and lives, con-tributing to the advancement of learning across awide range of research and scholarship, and shar-ing that knowledge and discovery with the world.

Rice’s advantages are its relatively small size, urban location, diversity and environment of in-terdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration. The second-smallest member of the Association ofAmerican Universities, Rice is home to a carefullyselected body of students, staff and faculty.

Rice recruits talented and enterprising studentsfrom the United States and 80 other countries andoffers them a rigorous and rewarding academic ex-perience — complete with opportunities to workside by side with some of the country’s top teach-ers and researchers. The university has nationaland international reach and seeks to attract themost talented people by promoting, celebratingand reaping the benefits of diversity. Students areselected on a “need-blind” basis, and undergrad-uates enroll in the schools of architecture, naturalsciences, engineering, humanities, music and so-cial sciences, which rank among the highest intheir disciplines.

In addition to its prestigious degree programs,Rice is well known for its professional develop-ment courses, customized courses for businessesand not-for-profit organizations, and more than 70educational outreach initiatives. The universityalso offers the largest selection of noncredit arts

and sciences coursesin Texas through itsSusanne M. Glass-cock School of Con-tinuing Studies.

Rice is also hometo a variety of institutes and centers, including theJames A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, a non-partisan institute that has brought a distinctivevoice to national policy dialogue, and the KinderInstitute for Urban Research, home to the KinderHouston Area Survey, the longest ongoing studyof any metropolitan area in the U.S.

Rice’s distinctive, tree-rich, 285-acre campus isonly a few miles from downtown Houston’s manycultural and entertainment amenities and is ide-ally located across the street from the Texas Med-ical Center (TMC), the world’s largest. Thisproximity, along with Rice’s BioScience ResearchCollaborative, an innovative space where scien-tists and researchers from Rice and the TMC worktogether performing research that benefits humanmedicine and health, ensures that Rice studentsand faculty have abundant opportunities for col-laborative projects and research.

In October 2012, we will commemorate Rice’scentennial and celebrate the remarkable journeythat has transformed Rice from a bold universityon the edge of the prairie to an international successon the cutting-edge of education and research. David W. Leebron has

served as Rice Univer-

sity’s seventh presi-

dent since 2004, a period of

growth and transformation for

the institution.

Early in his presidency, Lee-

bron engaged in extensive consul-

tations that produced the Vision

for the Second Century, a plan for

Rice’s growth and advancement as

one of the world’s premier research universities.

As Rice approaches its centennial anniversary

in 2012, the university is well-positioned for its

second hundred years.

Undergraduate enrollment has increased 30

percent since 2004. Applications more than

doubled to 13,795 for the fall 2011 class, with

9,000 applications from outside of Texas. In-

ternational applicants increased fivefold. Un-

dergraduate and graduate students come from

89 countries.

Much like Rice’s first president, Edgar Odell

Lovett, Leebron has a powerful international vi-

sion and has reached out to Asia and Latin

America. New study-abroad programs in Ar-

gentina and India have been added, along with

study and research opportunities in China,

Brazil and Turkey.

Leebron also has strengthened the univer-

sity’s local presence with programs that con-

nect students and faculty with the Greater

Houston community, such as Rice’s Kinder In-

stitute for Urban Research, home to the Hous-

ton Area Survey.

Under Leebron’s leadership, the campus has

added two new residential colleges; the 10-

story BioScience Research Collaborative, where

scientists and educators from Rice and other

Texas Medical Center institutions work to-

gether; a new recreation and wellness center;

an additional food servery; a cen-

tral campus pavilion that serves

as a meeting and study place; an

updated sports arena; a new

physics building; and the Public

Art Program, a presidential initia-

tive that has added beautiful art

across campus.

Prior to taking the helm at Rice,

Leebron was dean of Columbia

Law School. A native of Philadel-

phia, he is a graduate of Harvard College and

Harvard Law School, where he was elected

president of the Law Review in his second year.

After graduating in 1979, he served as a law

clerk for Judge Shirley Hufstedler on the 9th

Circuit Court of Appeals in Los Angeles. He

began teaching at the UCLA School of Law in

1980 and at the NYU School of Law in 1983.

In 1989, Leebron joined the faculty of Co-

lumbia Law School, and in 1996 he was ap-

pointed dean and the Lucy G. Moses Professor

of Law. Leebron also served as a visiting fellow

at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and

International Private Law in Hamburg, Ger-

many, and as the Jean Monnet Visiting Professor

of Law at Bielefeld University. He is currently

part of the political science faculty at Rice and

has authored a textbook on international

human rights.

In 2006, Leebron was presented with

France’s Commandeur de l’Ordre national du

Mérite, and in 2008, he received an honorary

doctorate from Nankai University. In 2010, Lee-

bron and his wife, University Representative Y.

Ping Sun, were selected by the Greater Houston

Partnership as the city’s International Executives

of the Year for helping make Houston a center

of international business.

Leebron and Sun have two children, Daniel

and Merissa.

R ick Greenspan, who has

led successful athletics

programs, facilities con-

struction and fundraising campaigns

as athletics director at Indiana Univer-

sity and West Point, was named Rice

University’s 15th Director of Athletics

on March 12, 2010.

Greenspan brings 30 years of ad-

ministrative and managerial experi-

ence in intercollegiate athletics,

physical education and recreation at public and pri-

vate universities to his position as the leader of Rice

Athletics and Recreation. Indiana captured eight in-

dividual or team national titles during Greenspan’s

tenure from 2004-08. He oversaw a 24-sport

NCAA Division IA intercollegiate athletics pro-

gram with a $53 million operating budget, nearly

700 student-athletes and a coaching and admin-

istrative staff of more than 175. He organized the

university’s first comprehensive capital campaign,

which increased annual giving by 41 percent and

raised $65 million toward the $80 million goal by

the midpoint, and led the construction of numer-

ous new athletics structures and refurbished out-

dated facilities.

From 1999 to 2004, Greenspan served as direc-

tor of intercollegiate athletics at the U.S. Military

Academy at West Point, where he managed a 25-

sport NCAA Division IA intercollegiate athletics

program with a $23 million budget and 800 stu-

dent-athletes. His overhaul of the annual giving

program resulted in a 300 percent increase in gifts

and a doubling of the average gift. Under his lead-

ership, 34 percent of all student-athletes made the

dean's list. He also developed and funded an ath-

letics facility master plan.

For the past year, Greenspan has worked as a

consultant to numerous Division I schools in search

processes for coaching and administrative vacancies.

He also has lectured for and consulted with the

NCAA Division IA Athletic Directors Association,

the National Association of Colle-

giate Directors of Athletics and the

National Association of Athletic

Compliance Officers.

The Greenbelt, Md., native has

also served as director of intercol-

legiate athletics at Illinois State

University (1993-99), senior asso-

ciate athletics director at University

of Miami (Fla.) (1992-93), associ-

ate athletics director at University

of California-Berkeley (1983-91), recreational

athletics coordinator at University of New

Hampshire (1982-83) and associate coordina-

tor for the Klotsche Center for Physical Edu-

cation and Recreation at University of

Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1979-82).

Rice Dean of Undergraduates Robin Forman

chaired the search committee for the new athletics

director. He said the committee established a num-

ber of criteria for the candidates, including honesty

and integrity; the ability to represent both the uni-

versity and its athletics programs well; the experi-

ence and leadership skills to help Rice’s

student-athletes succeed academically, athletically,

personally and professionally; and the potential to

foster a communitywide sense of engagement with

and excitement about athletics. The athletics di-

rector also oversees recreation and fitness pro-

grams for the university.

Greenspan has a master’s degree in physical

education and athletic administration from

Idaho State University, where he graduated

summa cum laude. He has a bachelor's degree

in behavioral science from the University of

Maryland-College Park, where he was a four-

year letter winner in baseball.

Greenspan and his wife, Jenny, have been

married 32 years. They have two grown chil-

dren: Emily, 29, a graduate of the University of

Connecticut, and Ben, 27, a graduate of

Indiana University.
