SAM’s IP Routing Control

SAM’s IP routing system is a state-of-the-art, fully integrated turnkey solution for deployment in small to enterprise wide operations. The system is agnostic with respect to the COTS IP switch vendor and IP switch size.

It can accommodate a single or mixed network speeds of 10, 25, 40, 50 & 100GbE.

Primary Features

The system supports self-discovery of all edge devices with subsequent selection and routing of multicast video, audio and data streams compliant with SMPTE 2110-10/20/30. As such it supports all packetized data transport types defined by SMPTE ST 2022-6, VSF TR-04/TR-03 (IETC RFC 4175), AES67 and IETF ANC291.

The system utilizes PTP timing to SMPTE ST 2059-1/2.

UHD 4K, 1080P, HD and SD signal formats (both uncompressed and compressed) can be routed using ‘break-before-make’ and/or ‘make-before-break’ switch modes.

Compression standards supported in SAM edge devices include VC-2, Tico and J2K.

System Architecture

SAM’s system architecture doesn’t rely on dynamic control of the IP switch itself with all media data switching being implemented by direct communication with the appropriate edge device(s)

SAM’s system mechanisms, based on the use of IGMPv3 and PIM-SSM protocols, means the use of an SDN (Software Defined Network) is unnecessary. SDN can, however, be implemented for ‘spine and leaf’ topologies if preferred to a single non-blocking monolithic IP switch.

SAM’s methodology ensures fast repeatable reboot with all switch routes immediately re-established!

System Redundancy

Partial or fully redundant schemes can be realised with options for dual controllers, dual IP networks (control & media), dual line cards (modular switches) and dual IP switches (modular or fixed).

All SAM edge devices implement the SMPTE ST 2022-7 signal redundancy scheme with packet-by-packet arbitration covering individual packet or full stream loss.

Orbit Control & Monitoring

Central to SAM’s IP routing system is the IP Network Monitor which is part of the Orbit suite of software packages.

The network monitor supports self-discovery of all edge devices, IP addressing and all the functions required for complete system configuration including setting all source and destination data stream flows.

It provides status reporting on all device ‘spigots’ including bandwidth monitoring of all associated data flows.

Orbit can also provide full system logging with all log files usually stored on a separate server.
