What is GENDER?
Refers to a socially constructed definition of what it means to be a man or a woman. Gender also refers to what a society believes about the appropriate roles, duties, rights, responsibilities, accepted behaviours, opportunities and status of women and men in relation to one another

Why GENDER?
• It is NOT the “in-thing”.• It has been identified as a critical social issue
to be considered and addressed in all development (social and spatial) efforts.

Why GENDER and Development?
• Highlights vulnerabilities resulting from gender norms.
• Outlines areas where “social transformation” may be required to ensure success of implementation and sustainability of gains made.

What is GENDER Integration?
Integrating gender into programming entails the identification and subsequent treatment of gender differences and inequalities during program/project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
Taking gender into account usually, but not always, involves a focus on women since women most often occupy a subordinate position in society or are the most marginalized in their communities.

EQUITY Approach to Development
• Demand for services/intervention• Availability of service/intervention• Quality of services/intervention – how does
“your” measure of quality match “their” measure of quality?
