Sara Selwood
• from her book The Benefits of Public Art, writes that Expansive claims are made for public
art. It is credited with being:
a cultural investment,
vital to the economic recovery of many cities.
It is said to contribute to local distinctiveness;
attract companies and investment;
feature in cultural tourism;
add to land values,
create employment;
increase the use of open spaces;
lower levels of vandalism……it is supposed
to humanise and otherwise improve the environment;
encourage greater care of areas by residents whose pride in their locality has
increased.

Mertzner believes that public art:
is not about the myth of the artist
it is about civic ness.
Its not to make people feel diminished andinsignificant,
but it is to glorify them.
It is not about the gap between culture and public,
but it’s to make art public, and artistscitizens again?
