Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

As the liturgical year comes to a close, it is fitting that we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. He is the beginning and the end. For this we thank the Father, who “delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins (Col 1:13-14).

In today’s gospel we see Jesus being mocked for not saving himself (Lk 23:35). But we also see him recognized by the repentant thief: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (23:42). Let us ask the Lord humbly, with the repentant thief, to remember us, and let us spread the good news of his kingdom, “a kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of justice, love and peace” as the preface of this feast prays for.

May Mary our Mother, who reigns with her Son, help us to be faithful witnesses and to bring about Christ’s kingdom among us. God bless you! Long live Christ the King!

Reflexión Dominical Al concluir el año litúrgico, es justo que celebremos la solemnidad

de Cristo Rey. Él es el principio y el fin. Por eso damos gracias al Padre, que “nos ha liberado del poder de las tinieblas y nos ha trasladado al Reino de su Hijo amado, por cuya sangre recibimos la redención, el perdón de los pecados” (Col 1,13-14).

En el evangelio de hoy vemos a Jesús siendo objeto de burlas por no salvarse a sí mismo (Lc 23,35). Pero también vemos como lo reconoce el ladrón arrepentido: “Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a tu reino” (23,42). Pidámosle al Señor humildemente, junto con el ladrón arrepentido, que se acuerde de nosotros, y trabajemos para extender la buena nueva de su reino, “reino de verdad y de vida, de santidad y de gracia, de justicia, de amor y de paz” como dice el prefacio de esta fiesta.

Que María nuestra Madre, que reina con su Hijo, nos ayude a ser testigos fieles del Señor y trabajar porque el reino de Cristo venga a nosotros. Que Dios los bendiga. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

The 40 Hours in Our Parish (IV) OUR PARISH will celebrate the 40 Hours Devotion as part of the celebration

for our 60th anniversary, to thank the Lord for his many blessings to us individually and as a community and to ask him to make us grow in Faith, be firm in Hope and fervent in Charity.

I want to ask all of you to participate in some aspect of St. Hugh’s 40 Hours Devotion as a sign of gratitude and commitment. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all day and night in the main church. We have a web site and sign-up sheets at all entrances for you to promise an hour of adoration with the Lord during those 40 hours. This plea especially goes out to those of you who do not participate in Adoration. There are three special evening events, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Las 40 Horas en nuestra parroquia (IV) NUESTRA PARROQUIA celebrará la devoción de las 40 Horas como parte de

The 40 Hours devotion will take place in our parish from Sunday, December 8, starting with the 7 pm Mass, until Tuesday, December 10, when a solemn closing Mass will be celebrated at 7 pm. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed continuously during that time. Confessions will be heard on Monday, from 6:30-9 pm. Come and adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in thanksgiving for our parish’s anniversary and for His many blessings. Meet the Saints /Conozca a los Santos ST. JOHN GABRIEL PERBOYRE (1802-1840) — From

an early age he desired to be a missionary. At the age of 15 he entered the congregations of St. Vincent de Paul and insisted before his superiors about his desire to dedicate himself to the missions in China. After teaching at the seminary and working with the novices for several years, he finally was sent to Macao in 1835. There he studied Chinese, and had to disguise himself, dressing in the style of the natives.

Persecution started in 1839. The mission was razed by soldiers and the missionaries who were able to escape wandered south of the Yang-tze river.

Fr. Perboyre took refuge with a Chinese convert who betrayed him. He was jailed and tortured, his face marked with Chinese characters. The torturers were unsuccessful when they tried to force him to step on the crucifix. After a year of suffering, he was strangled to death on a cross in Wuchangfu, the capital, on September 11, 1840. He is the first saint of China.

SAN JUAN GABRIEL PERBOYRE (1802-1840) — Desde temprana edad anheló ser misionero. A los 15 años ingresó en la congregación de San Vicente de Paul, e insistió ante sus superiores en el deseo de dedicarse a las misiones de China. En 1835 partió para Macao. Allí se aplicó al estudio del idioma chino, tuvo que disfrazarse y vestir a la usanza de los naturales del país y fue destinado a la misión de Honán, donde se dedicó a la salvación de los niños abandonados. Dos años después fue enviado a la provincia de Hupeh.

En el año 1839 se desató la persecución. La misión fue ocupada por las tropas, y los misioneros que lograron escapar vagaron por el sur del río Yang-tsé.

El P. Perboyre se refugió en la choza de un converso chino quien lo delató. Fue puesto en prisión y torturado, grabando en su rostro caracteres chinos, pero fracasaron al querer que pisoteara un crucifijo. Al año de ser capturado se dio fin a su martirio, en la capital, Wuchangfú, donde lo ahorcaron en un madero con forma de cruz, el 11 de septiembre de 1840. Es el primer santo de la China.

In life not everything is resolved with justice. No. Especially where one must put a stop to evil, someone must love beyond

what is due, in order to recommence a relationship of grace. Evil knows revenge, and if it is not stopped, it risks spreading,

suffocating the entire world.

Jesus replaced the law of retaliation — what you have done to me, I will do to you in return — with the law of love: what God has done for me, I shall do for you in return! Let us consider

today, ... whether I am able to forgive. And if I do not feel I can, I must ask the Lord to give me the grace to forgive, because knowing how to forgive is a grace.

God gives every Christian the grace to write a story of good in the life of his or her brothers and sisters, especially of those who have done something

regrettable or wrong. With a word, an embrace, a smile, we can pass on to others the most precious thing we have received. What is the most precious thing we

have received? Forgiveness, which we too must be able to give to others.

En la vida, no todo se resuelve con la justicia. No. Especialmente donde debemos poner una barrera al mal, alguien debe amar más de lo necesario, para comenzar una historia de gracia nuevamente. El mal conoce sus venganzas, y si no se interrumpe, corre el riesgo de propagarse y sofocar al mundo entero.

La ley del talión: lo que me hiciste, te lo devuelvo, Jesús la sustituye con la ley de amor: lo que Dios me ha hecho, ¡te lo devuelvo! Pensemos hoy, (…) si puedo perdonar. Y si no me siento capaz, tengo que pedirle al Señor que me dé la gracia de perdonar, porque saber perdonar es una gracia.

Dios le da a cada cristiano la gracia de escribir una historia de bien en la vida de sus hermanos, especialmente de aquellos que han hecho algo desagradable e incorrecto. Con una palabra, un abrazo, una sonrisa, podemos transmitir a los demás lo más precioso que hemos recibido ¿Qué es lo más precioso que hemos

recibido? El perdón, que debemos ser capaces de dar a los demás.

A special thank you to Mrs. Dimond, Mrs. Kelly and all the parents that generously volunteered to make this such a wonderful experience for our visitors; and to our St. Hugh student council for representing our school and welcoming our visitors.

We celebrated the feast day of our patron saint, St. Hugh of Lincoln. Thank you to Fr. Luis, Ms. Zapiain, Mrs. Salazar, Ms. Villar, 5th grade, 4th grade, the choir and to all of our students for this wonderful liturgical experience! A special thank you to Leman Oliveros for a beautiful representation of St. Hugh of Lincoln.
