MARCH NEWSLETTER 2016

Spring is in the air!

Or is winter trying to trick us? Just when we think we can throw off our boots and winter jackets, Mother Nature surprises us with more snow. This can make it difficult to know how to dress our children for school. We advise you to pack an extra pair of socks and pants in your child’s backpack for those puddle accidents. Please make sure you label everything!

Our students were busy during the second term of school. They are looking forward to sharing their progress with you during our Student-Led Conferences on the evening of Wednesday, March 23rd and the afternoon of Thursday, March 24th. Every family has been given a time to meet with your child’s teacher. If you did not receive the notice from your child, please contact their teacher.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the many activities we had going on at SMP during the second term. Students took part in literacy club, Mad Science, student leadership, Builder’s Club, the Winnipeg Music Festival, basketball, and the Divisional Tumbling Rally to name a few. A big thank you goes out to our many staff members who volunteered their time to enhance our students’ school experience. We could not do it without your support.

April is school planning month. During this month our staff will be looking at the data and evidence collected to date and reviewing our current goals and priorities. We will be establishing our school goals and priorities for the 2016-2017 school year in conjunction with divisional and provincial priorities. School planning is a collaborative process and we will be looking for input from all of our stakeholders; staff, students, parents. Please join us at our Community Schools Association meetings held every month to learn about our process and to help us in establishing future goals.

This final term of the school year will be busy with activities designed to support our school curriculums and activities meant to give your children new and varied experiences. Please make every effort to encourage your child to be present for these specially planned events.

Warm regards,

The students are busy singing, drumming, and playing instruments in the Early Years Music room. The grade 4 and 5 students are starting to learn guitar and are also exploring different band instruments. A big thanks to Ms. Giese for her initiative in purchasing and starting guitar in our school last year! I, Mrs. Neufeld, am now continuing this initiative with our students.

The Grade 3 students will be starting recorder after Spring Break. The cost

for this instrument is $7.00 for a new recorder or $2.00 for a previously

owned one. If anyone has a recorder sitting at home they would like to

donate to the music program, please let Mrs. Neufeld know! As well,

Grade 5 students can sell their recorder at the end of the year for $2.00 as

part of our pay-it-forward program.

Congratulations to our Grade 2 & 3 choir for

their excellent representation and singing at the Winnipeg Music Festival on

March 2, 2016. They sang two songs, “The Ghost Ship” and “Spider Hunter”.

The adjudicator was impressed with their “wonderful, descriptive words” and

numerous musical details that were present to make the performance

interesting. She noticed that they “sang with such joy and vitality”.

They received a gold for their performance.

Dear Families,

I know that I have asked you many times before but I am asking you once again to choose safety over convenience when dropping off your children in the morning and picking them up after school. It seems that now that the front of the school is being closely monitored by the Winnipeg Police Service, many of our families are choosing to drop off in the back alley. This is a very unsafe practice.

Drivers are not only putting their children at risk by dropping off in the back alley, they are also putting neighbours and staff members at risk! There have been a number of “near misses” that have involved car and pedestrian. We are receiving calls from our neighbours and from concerned parents who have witnessed “near misses” from the playground.

Parents should not be dropping off in the back alley. Please use the side streets and encourage your children to walk the short distance to and from the school.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Fire Drills and Lockdown Drills

During the school year, we will have 10 fire drills and 2 lockdown drills in

order to practice what to do in these situations. Staff have talked to students

about the procedures we use during drills and the reasons for practicing

these routines.

The patrols of the month for February:

Haileigh K.

Chantelle T.

Jordan D.

Hannah W.

Yours in Safety,

Ms. Gross

The patrols continue to keep the students at

Salisbury Morse Place school safe while crossing at

the busy intersections. Please help your child make

sure they are arriving before attendance is taken and not late,

as this affects the whole team.

The patrols will be going to Wheelies after spring break on April

12th in the morning.

It’s hard to believe that spring is already upon us. The winter has gone by very quickly with many clubs going on at lunchtime and after school.

The grade 1 students came to the gym every Monday in January and February for Gym Blitz. I would like to thank our many grade 4 and 5 helpers who came every Monday to lead the kids at the stations. These leaders include Brianna P, Shayla M, Isabelle B, Rylan C, Cheyne D, Janae E, Logan H, Rebecca P, Stefani S, Hannah W, Darian P, Halah L, Kayla C, Marissa K, Kenadee G, and Claire L.

The grade 2 students got the chance to work out every Tuesday at lunchtime. They were the first group to use the climbing wall consistently. They learned very important techniques and did a lot of decision making.

The grade 3-5 students have been coming to the gym since January to learn and practice their gymnastics skills. On Monday, March 21, the students will participate in the Divisional Tumbling Rally. Congratulations to Aliah A, Bryan A, Wyatt B, Paige M, Angelle P, Asher P, Jackie W, Luisa P, Enzoe C, Vitalia T, Kami C, Immaculata, Alexandra J, Kassidy J, Haileigh K, Madison C, Aaliyah G-G, Callie B, Madison M, Makayla V, Kayla C, Halah L, Aliyah N, Kenadee G, Marissa K, Kelsey M, Brianna P, Maddi, Rebecca P, Stefani S, and Hannah W for their commitment and success.

The grade 3 students have also had the chance to use the gym on Thursdays at lunchtime to play indoor soccer. This club will continue in April.

Mondays in March have been dedicated to the grade 3 - 5 students who want to practice their skipping skills. Many have come out and really worked hard. There are many students who can successfully show several hand and feet tricks. Way to go! This club also allows the students to prepare for a special assembly on Tuesday, March 22 from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We have been supporting this foundation for over 20 years here at SMP. We talk a lot about having a healthy heart and how to attain it. Skipping is definitely one of those activities that delivers this result. We look forward to their visit.

After the spring break, some clubs will carry on. There will be indoor soccer still for the grade 3 students, and a new sport called Spikeball will be discovered by the grade 4 and 5 students.

Enjoy the warmer weather!

The Grade 4/5 students in Ms. May's class are practicing how to write detailed paragraphs.

We have learned how to place a title in the middle of our page, how to indent, and what a topic sentence and closing sentence are. We are also learning to use descriptive details to make our writing interesting to the reader.

Here is a whole class paragraph we wrote after attending a concert that was put on by the Middle Years band.

Thank you to all the families who participated in our Hoffmanns fundraiser.

Will be holding a family movie night on Thursday, April 21 in the gym. Look for details that will be sent home and posted on the website.

For the safety of all students, please consider using Prince Rupert as a one way street from Besant avenue to London Avenue during drop off and pick up times. Please do not turn around in the middle of the street as it creates unsafe conditions for our families.

Next CSA Meeting is Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 in the middle years library. Hope to see you there!

Allergies

There are several students with life threatening allergies in our school. We work very hard to provide a safe environment for all students. We ask that all families consider the following in the interest of safety:

Contact with even a tiny amount of an allergen can cause a severe reaction.

Nuts are the most common allergen in the school (especially peanuts).

Check the labels on food products that are sent to school and avoid all nut products

Thank you for helping to keep the school safe as possible for all of our students.

If families would like to donate to the program, we welcome donations of cereals and granola bars that are peanut-free.

Thank you in advance for your support.
