NON-LIVESTOCK

INFORMATION Please take a few minutes to read the very beginning of each section in which you plan to exhibit (i.e. foods, clothing, home environment, etc.) in the fairbook. There is valuable information included which may lead to a better ribbon placing if you follow the guidelines. Some examples are: - All woodworking projects require copies of plans used even if you use plans from the manual or made the item from your own plans. - Some Home Environment (Visual Arts, Design Decisions, Heirloom Treasures and Quilt Quest) exhibits require extra information and framed exhibits and some Visual Arts require a means for hanging the exhibit (hook or wire). - All foods and food preservation exhibits must include a recipe and the source of the recipe. Food preservation exhibits also need preservation labels attached. Home Environment Supporting Information & Copywritten Images—Reminder that all Home Environment should include the supporting information tag found at: https://go.unl.edu/homeenvtag. These will be required on any Home Environment exhibits selected for State Fair. Copywritten images are prohibited, see link: https://go.unl.edu/copywrittenimages

Horticulture & Flower Entries (County Fair) We are asking that you make your own entry tags on 4” X 6” index cards. See example for information that needs to be

included on the card. A template can be found at:https://go.unl.edu/hortcards. If you are entering a bucket flower, please put your name on the bottom of the container with a

permanent marker. 4-H Photography Exhibit Labels Photography exhibits require data tags. We have data tags at our office or you can find them on our website at https://go.unl.edu/photolabels. Refer to the guide for preparing your photography exhibits at: https://go.unl.edu/preparingphotoexhibits

FOODS EXHIBITS

Foods Exhibit Tips Following is a summary of important tips for 4-H’ers preparing foods exhibits for the fair. A more complete list is available at the Extension Office or at: https://go.unl.edu/foodexhibits - Icings/frostings made with raw eggs are not acceptable; however, egg white rinses brushed on prior to baking are fine. - Cream cheese frostings are only acceptable if the recipe has a ration of 4 cups sugar per 8 ounces of cream cheese but whipped cream cheese frostings without powdered sugar are NOT acceptable. - Cream cheese fillings or melted cheese toppings may result in an unsafe food product by judging time due to heat and humidity and will be disqualified. DO NOT BRING: breads containing ingredients that are normally refrigerated, caramel corn, custard or cream pies, jerky of any kind, foods that contain alcohol, meat filled pastries, sourdough or friendship bread products. Food exhibits will not be tasted as part of the judging process this year. Food Preservation Label Template All Food Preservation Exhibits must include a label. A template can be found at: https://go.unl.edu/foodpreservationcard or picked up at the Extension Office. Food Judging Guide Available This is a very good teaching resource for 4-H foods projects. Not only does it talk about the quality standards a judge looks for, it describes what you might have done wrong when you end up with a poor quality food product. Stop by our office for a copy or download it at: http://go.unl.edu/foodsjudgingguide

STATIC PROJECT SCORESHEETS

Be sure to check out the score sheets for each area of inter-est. The scoresheets will help you know what judges are looking for and what they will be judging you on. You will find them here https://4h.unl.edu/fairbook/static under each curriculum area. You can then view, download and print for your reference. If you are looking for one and can’t find it, give us a call.

Food Exhibit Quantity

Has Been Reduced

Due to health directives from COVID-19, no food exhibits will be available for human consumption. The quantity of items required for judging has been reduced (see the individual classes on the following pages to reduce excessive food waste.)

Horticulture Exhibit

Quantity Has Been Reduced

If the number required in an uneven (odd) number then round down to the nearest number. For exam-ple, if you are bringing beets in Class 204 (5 re-quired now becomes only 2). This is being done to eliminate food waste. Flowers will still require the number of stems listed in the fair book.

Live Streaming of Fashion

SMALL ANIMAL, CAT & DOG SHOW EXHIBITORS

Exhibitors of small animals should be aware that the score sheet includes up to 10 points for: Photos/poster and discussion of home habitat. Please think about this and prepare yourself with a poster or

pictures of the habitat your small animal calls home. For fish this might include a picture of where the tank sits, so the judge can see daylight exposure, or a picture and/or drawing of the entire trail habitat your hamster lives in. Ten points could make a purple ribbon.

Please review these sections of the fairbook so you know what is required of you. The more prepared you are, the better you will do.

Refer to the fairbook for rules and official dress code requirements.

REMEMBER: YOU MAY NOT ADD EVENTS THE DAY OF THE SHOW!

Patterns will be posted on our 4-H website as soon as they are available.

Animal Entry Information

Page 7: SALINE COUNTY NEWS & VIEWS July 2020 › statewide › saline › 4-H... · times by exhibitors, parents, volunteers, and spectators. When arriving on the grounds for animal list

All beef, goat, sheep, swine, horse, rabbit & poultry exhibitors will receive a general informational exhibitor letter in the mail soon and will be posted on our 4-H website. This letter will outline changes and fair procedures. As always, refer to the fairbook for official rules for each specie area. You will find the specie grooming rules in the fairbook as well. Exhibitor backtags will be available for each specie at check-in each morning. Please don’t misplace them as Becky will not be in the 4-H fair office as she will be helping with check-in, weigh-in, and making show orders.

POULTRY AND RABBIT EXHIBITORS

Cages will not be assigned. If you can, we encourage you to show out of your own cages that you use to transport your animals

to the fair. Large waterfowl and turkeys can be placed in the cages in the poultry lean-to area. Upon arrival, you will need to check-in to

let the show staff know you are here.

Wash racks will be available, however, with the limited time between arrival, check-in and show start times, there will be a very limited amount of time for preparing your animals for the show. WE ARE ENCOURAGING YOU TO HAVE THE ANIMALS AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE BEFORE LEAVING HOME. We know accidents happen so wash only as necessary. You may need to have your trailer cleaner than normal and use more bedding than you normally would for transportation.

WASH RACKS & ANIMAL GROOMING

Clover Kids enrolled in 4-H (ages 5-7 on Jan. 1st) who made fair entries online will have the

opportunity to participate in live animal classes and a showmanship class for them during their

respective animal show(s). Please review the revised schedule for check-in times, show day, etc. as these times, dates, and rules will also apply to clover kids. THERE WILL NOT BE ANY OTHER CLOVER KIDS SHOWMANSHIP IN 2020 FOR OTHER YOUTH AGES 5-7. WE ARE ONLY HAVING SHOWMANSHIP FOR THOSE CLOVER KIDS WHO MADE FAIR ENTRIES.

NO MARKET ANIMAL PREMIUM AUCTION IN 2020

The decision was made by the market animal premium auction committee (those who attended the spring auction meeting) not to hold a market animal premium auction in 2020. While this was a difficult decision to make as youth have already missed out on many opportunities this year, it is a decision that was made based on following social distancing guidelines and directed health measures.

2020 Nebraska State Fair is a Go – Showcasing 4-H and FFA Youth

Visitors and participants will notice modifications to protect public health

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (June 30, 2020) — The Nebraska State Fair Board voted to hold a 2020 State Fair showcasing 4-H and FFA competitions and exhibitions. While the Fair will look different than it has in the past, providing an opportunity for young people to showcase the work they have been doing throughout the year is important to the State Fair and to the future of our state. The 2020 State Fair will include 4-H and FFA livestock competitions, contests, presentations, and static exhibits. View the full announcement at: https://go.unl.edu/2020nestatefairannouncement The 4-H Livestock Shows will all be held on the first weekend (August 29-30). This schedule will coincide with all 4-H judging contests and the 4-H Fashion Show. The FFA livestock schedule will look similar and be on the second weekend (September 5-6). Tentative schedule: https://go.unl.edu/2020tentativesfschedule We will notify you when the entry website is open for 4-H and FFA animal entries. The entry deadline is 8 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2020.

REMINDERS FOR ALL LIVESTOCK SHOWMAN

1. Exhibitors MUST demonstrate an ability to control their animal, upon the second escape the animal will be eliminated from competition. The substitute showman policy also prevents a more experienced exhibitor from showing an uncontrollable animal, as substitutes are only in case of illness, disability or conflict of schedule.

2. 4-H Clover Kids (ages 5-7) are NOT to serve as substitute showmen. SHOWMANSHIP POLICY Exhibitors MUST use their own animal for showmanship. Substitute showmen must be Saline County 4-H or FFA members, not Clover Kids, who are exhibiting at the fair. See page 7 of the fairbook for Showmanship age divisions. If you made livestock entries online, we pre-entered showmanship for you. If you do not wish to participate, you simply do not enter the ring during your showmanship division. LIVESTOCK GROOMING POLICY REMINDER If you are physically able to exhibit your animal/project, then we expect you to also prepare your project for all showing. Grooming animals for show is primarily the responsibility of exhibitors. However, assistance from immediate family members, fellow exhibitors, and 4-H and FFA leaders/advisors is permitted as a learning tool for future shows. We will be monitoring animal grooming. Show Dress Code You must wear the “official” grey 4-H or FFA show shirt while showing your animals. Horse exhibitor must follow the Horse exhibitor dress code as outlined in the fairbook. If you are a horse exhibitor, check to see if you have an armband. Armbands are available at the Extension Office and will be sold at the announcers stand during the 4-H Horse Show. Proper dress code is to be followed by all junior exhibitors when showing project animals. Please carefully read the dress code rules in the fairbook for those that pertain to your specific species. Drug Testing Any animal at the Saline County Fair is subject to both urine and blood testing at the discretion of the show superintendent with the cost incurred by the exhibitor if something illegal is detected. The Nebraska Department of Ag will be conducting surveillance testing of poultry for Avian Influenza and Pullorum-Typhoid at county fairs in 2020.
