Salesforce Enables the Health Sector Engage More Deeply With Patients.

Today’s patients expect a faster, more personalized healthcare experience than ever before. For healthcare organizations, these patient expectations add on to increasing pressures from new reimbursement models, narrowing operating margins from increasingly consolidated systems. Simply put, providers need to rethink the patient experience.

In a report by Deloitte, 85% of organizations view customer experience provided through the contact center as a competitive differentiator. The way patients want to communicate with their healthcare professionals is evolving. Armed with mobile devices, home monitoring devices, and wearable apps, patients are connected and vocal. For the first time, healthcare must look at patients like a consumer and deliver exceptional customer service like they receive in every other aspect of their life.

Salesforce Research surveyed more than 2,025 U.S. adults for the State of Connected Patient Report to discover what patients are expecting when it comes to their relationships with doctors and primary care providers. Here are a few key findings on what patients are looking for in the future of the doctor/patient relationship.

62% of U.S. adults with health insurance and a primary care provider would be open to virtual care treatments, such as a video conference call for non-urgent matters

78% of patients who own a wearable would want their doctors to have access to data created by the device

61% of patients who have been, or had a family member, hospitalized in the last two years say that post-discharge improvements can be made via better communication with their doctor and care teams

Salesforce Health Cloud

Salesforce Health Cloud is setting a new standard for patient management software that goes beyond electronic medical records alone. Health Cloud is focused on patient engagement solutions that allow care coordinators to engage more deeply with patients across any device, issue smarter patient care decisions, and focus on 1-to-1 patient relationships.

Salesforce Health Cloud pulls data from hospitals' and doctors' offices' electronic medical systems, connected medical devices like blood glucose meters used by diabetics, and even wearable fitness trackers into an interface that evokes familiar services like Facebook and Slack. An internal messaging system allows medical providers to communicate and share information, and lets patients and their family members join or initiate those conversations.

It’s interesting to note that although today’s population is more involved with their personal healthcare, there is still a wide knowledge gap regarding services they can utilize. In a study of 10,000 patients, Accenture discovered that less than one out of five knew about the patient services available to them. The report also stated that of the patients who were aware of the services, 79% found them extremely helpful.

With whatever advantages Salesforce may have because of its experience managing customer service, getting patients to engage more in their own health care has proved difficult for other companies, including Google, which pulled the plug on its personal health records offering. If patients don't use Salesforce Health Cloud, its value to the health providers who pay for it is lessened. And the service doesn't solve one of the most vexing problems in health information technology, which is the continued inability of different electronic medical systems to talk to each other.

Newman said. "EMR really focuses on the back office of health care: medicines, labs, procedures, notes -- the things you get paid for," he said. "We built these systems for not-health-care. We built these systems for regular customers dealing with regular businesses."
