The Daily News of TV Sales Tuesday, January 23, 2018 TOTAL TV SLIPS, INTERNET VIEWING UP NATIONAL AD IMPRESSIONS DOWN Closing out 2017, Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser says December was much like the rest of the year. His number crunching of Nielsen data finds that total use of television was down again—falling 4.6% on a total day basis for adults 18-49 during December, although only down -0.6% among all households. National TV commercial impressions delivered among adults 18-49 fell 8.2% in December 2017 vs. December 2016 on a total-day basis and were down 10.1% for primetime. Meanwhile, consumption of TV content via Internet- connected devices (ICDs)—including Roku, Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast—rose by 43% year-over-year among all households, or 35% among adults 18-49, to account for 13.0% of total TV use among adults 18- 49 on a total day basis and 8.8% among all people. These figures for December 2017 9.2% and 6.2% for the two audience breaks, respectively. National commercial loads which qualified for C3/C7 ratings (which exclude unencoded or otherwise non- qualifying activity in digital environments) across the industry were up slightly to 11.1 minutes per hour across all Nielsen-tracked programming during December 2017. The analyst said that compared to 10.7 minutes per hour in December 2016 and 10.5 minutes per hour in December 2015. “Overall, the industry-level results remain negative for ad-supported national TV as a medium, much as with observations from other months in 2017,” Wieser wrote in a research report. But he noted that viewing of unrated programming through Internet-connected devices and of premium video on PCs, tablets and mobile phones are undoubtedly accounting for some of these declines, and probably would bring year-over-year trends closer to flat figures if total audience data were available. “We continue to believe in our maxim that television is the worst form of advertising except all those others which have been tried, at least for those advertisers focused on awareness-based media goals,” Wieser said. And budgets aren’t generally affected by ratings changes in the short- term. But he noted that sentiment toward TV is worsening, particularly as reported viewing by Adults 18-49 falls. “Negative sentiment ultimately leads to advertisers’ efforts to explore and encourage the use of alternative media vehicles, or otherwise establish marketing goals that are not necessarily awareness-driven,” he noted. By network group, Viacom had the largest share of C3 commercial impressions in December, at 14.7%--although that was down from 15.4% a year earlier. NBCUniversal claimed 13.4%, Disney 11.9%, Time Warner 10.9%, Fox Networks 8.7% and Discovery 6.4%. Clocking in below 5% were A+E 4.9%, CBS at 4.7%, Scripps Networks Interactive 4.5% and AMC 2.9%. HOMEBUILDER CONFIDENCE SLIPS Homebuilder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes dropped two points to start 2018, to a January survey level of 72. However, that was down from an 18-year high in December. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) is based on a monthly survey going back 30 years. “The HMI gauge of future sales expectations has remained in the 70s, a sign that housing demand should continue to grow in 2018,” said NAHB chief economist Robert Dietz. “As the overall economy strengthens, owner-occupied household formation increases and the supply of existing home inventory tightens, we can expect the single-family housing market to make further gains this year.”

THIS AND THAT Automotive News reports that Chevrolet is looking to expand its dealer network for commercial medium-duty trucks. General Motors estimates that a well-equipped existing dealership would have to make an investment of $10,000 to $15,000 to be able to sell and service the commercial trucks—or $100,000 to $200,000 if starting from scratch. GM currently has 240 dealers for medium-duty commercial trucks and reportedly wants to expand that to about 400 with the introduction of Chevy Silverado 4500HD and 5500HD trucks……People spend a lot on retail items while traveling. Allied Market Research says the global travel retail market was valued at $69.5 billion in 2016, and is projected to reach $125.1 billion by 2023, growing at a CAGR of 8.9% from 2017 to 2023. The perfumes & cosmetics segment leads the market, with wines & spirits second.

EVEN MORE CONTENT COMING Digiday spoke with industry leaders of major U.S. media companies about their future goals, especially when it comes to creating original content. Of those surveyed, 96 percent said they expect more digital media companies to begin producing original content for either television of over-the-top (OTT), and 81 percent said they are looking to increase OTT content for their own brand. However, those same leaders also said their biggest challenges with OTT platforms include content discoverability and audience reach, and 64 percent of them said they are looking to overcome that challenge by creating an app for their OTT content. Despite creating goals for more OTT programming, 54 percent of the respondents said mobile video will actually be their main focus for 2018. Nearly 66 percent of the leaders said they expect legacy publishers will create competition for digitally-native publishers when it comes to online video. Many digital publishers learned in 2017 that ads on their content are not enough to support a business, and original content may be the way to monetize their digital presence. Sixty-one percent of digital publishers told Digiday that Facebook offers either very little or no value to those publishing on the platform, and only seven percent said the majority of their digital revenue came from Facebook.
