Rail travel in Europe, considered to be the most environmentally friendly way to travel, is a seamless, hassle-free, fast and fun experience. What better way to see Europe’s diverse landscapes than from the comfort of your train seat, watching the rolling countryside change as you look out the window?

Eurail Passes Vs. Point-To-Point Rail TicketsWhile we think everyone should travel in Europe on a Eurail Pass, we understand that sometimes it can be cheaper to simply purchase a point-to-point rail ticket for your client. If you find yourself booking three or more point-to-point rail tickets for a client, or if your client is looking to cross borders and travel between two or more countries, then you’ll often find that a Eurail Pass is a more cost-effective way for them to travel. WHAT ABOUT INTERRAIL?Ever heard of our sister brand “Interrail” and wondered what the difference was? Put simply, the Interrail Pass is the option for residents of the EU, while the Eurail Pass is the option for everyone else in the world. However, as a result of the new Eurail Pass changes (effective 1 January 2019), there is now very little difference between Interrail and Eurail Passes.

LEARN THE LINGO:Most agents call us by our name – “Eurail”, although we do also get referred to as a “Europass” or “Euro-Rail Pass”. Semantics aside, we suggest calling us by our correct name so as not to confuse your clients.

!IMPORTANT: It is compulsory to travel with your Eurail Pass and photographic identification (passport) at all times, and present both to rail staff whenever requested.

1. ACTIVATE Each traveller must activate their Eurail Pass prior to using it. Eurail Passes can be activated with travel agents or within European train stations.

2. COMPLETE CONTACT DETAILSBefore using their Eurail Pass, travellers must fill out their contact details on the cover of their Pass.

4. TRAVEL CALENDAR (ONLY FOR FLEXI PASSES)Travellers on Flexi Passes must complete a travel calendar entry to activate each rail travel day. If travelling overnight on a single train journey (past midnight), travellers only need to activate the rail travel date of their departure (e.g. a traveller that departs at 10pm on 1st January, arriving at 4am on 2nd January on the same train, will only need to activate 1st January as their rail travel day in their travel calendar.

N.B. Due to product streamlining, the old 7pm-4am rule has been discontinued effective 1st January 2019 and replaced by the new midnight rule.

3. BEFORE BOARDINGPrior to boarding each train, travellers must complete a travel diary entry for their upcoming journey, including the date and time of their train trip, travel route (from/to) and means of transport.

5. RETURN YOUR PASS (OPTIONAL)At the end of your European holiday, travellers are encouraged to post their Eurail Pass cover and ticket to Eurail’s headquarters in Utrecht. All travellers who return their Pass by post will receive a ‘thank you’ gift.

Those travelling on a Eurail Pass have access to the extensive route networks of more than 35 participating rail and ferry operators across Europe. These routes are travelled by visitors and locals alike, and as such will have busy and quiet periods. This means that subject to availability, unless seats are pre-booked, travellers will not be guaranteed a seat. If your clients are travelling on quieter regional routes, or in low season, then this shouldn’t present them with any issues. But in some instances, pre-booked seat reservations are required or recommended.

Seat reservations are an additional cost (NOT included in the cost of the Eurail Pass) and can vary considerably from less than €1 to over €140 per journey, with selected routes including complimentary meals and/or newspapers in the price. Seat reservations are available up to 3 months in advance of travel. As Eurail Passes are available for purchase up to 11 months in advance, agents and/or clients may need to set a reminder to organise seat reservations closer to travel date.

Clients can choose to organise their own seat reservations via the Eurail Rail Planner App, direct with each rail or ferry operator, or at some station ticket windows. We recommend that as their agent, you offer to provide this service (for a small fee) to ensure your clients aren’t disappointed during their holiday. Some Eurail Pass distributors offer seat reservations as an additional service to save you time – be sure to check with your distributor to find out more.

!IMPORTANT: If your client has opted to look after their own seat reservations, remind them where/when they will be required to make seat reservations, and also where/when seat reservations are recommended. We suggest sending them a reminder in writing to reinforce that they have chosen to take on the responsibility to book their own seat reservations.
