Niedersachsen is located in northwest Germany and is bordered by the North Sea coast in the north and by the Harz mountains and the Weser hill country in the south. What’s in between encompasses everything from historic and seafaring towns to trade fair locations of international signifi cance. Various natural habitats with tranquil rivers, dense deciduous and evergreen forests as well as moorland and heath landscapes offer opportunities for a multifaceted holiday in Niedersachsen.

The possibilities include everything from water sports, hiking, road cycling and mountain biking to equestrian sports and golf. 20,000 km of river routes and 13,000 km of cycle paths wind their way through the region. Exciting theme parks, animal parks and zoos ensure a memorable visit.

Cultural enthusiasts will enjoy historic windmills, exciting museums, magnifi cent castles and fortresses, as well as top international artists at dance and music festivals. There are no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites in Niedersachsen. Hildesheim boasts the Ma-riendom and St. Michael’s, and Goslar has the old town as well as the nearby Rammelsberg mine and the Upper Harz Water Manage-ment area; the Fagus Factory in Alfeld has been listed since 2011. And let’s not forget the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site: the Wadden Sea in the North Sea.

The federal state also wins over visitors with diverse cuisine char-acterised by both traditional regionalism and by contemporary internationalism: country inns and fi ne gourmet restaurants attract guests with regional specialities including hearty green cabbage, delicate fi sh dishes, and fresh asparagus.

From urban tours to maritime experiences to cultural tourism – Germany’s second-largest federal state has a lot to offer. Our sales guide niedersachsen is full of ideas that enable tour opera-tors to put together their own individualised holidays. Additional information is available on our website www.niedersachsen-tourism.com. Should you require further information, we will be delighted to assist you.

Moving stories. More than 7 million emigrants began their transatlantic voyage from Bremerhaven. The place where they said farewell to Europe is now home to the German Emigration Center, the fi rst museum to address the issue of migration, or “starting a new life”. What does it feel like to leave your home behind and start a new life ? The museum traces the fate of an emigrant from dockside farewells and the transatlantic journey to the arrival in the New World. In its new wing, the museum also tells the stories of those who have come to Germany to seek their fortune over the past 300 years. Here visitors can embark on a personal search for ancestors in the genealogical data banks.

Contact ContactEmsland PapenburgEmsland is a holiday paradise for cyclists and families looking for fun and variety, as well as for nature lovers who prefer quiet refuges in the woods, on the moor or by the water. 3,500 km of well-signposted cycling routes offer endless possibilities. The Emsland Route shows holiday cyclists all the facets of Emsland on a circuit of the area. Rivers, moors and forests offer an ideal environment for tours pursuing the footprints of history from the Stone Age to the Baroque, taking in some wonders of German engineering and quaint inns on the way.MEYER WERFT offers visitors a fascinating glimpse of how gigantic ocean liners are built, while the gardening giant Emsfl ower spirits visitors into the world of plant breeding. Moormuseum fea-tures the world’s largest steam plough, while Clemenswerth castle is a graceful Baroque hunting ground; brewers and distillers produce traditional specialities, and hospitality is always near at hand.

Germany’s oldest and most extensive fen colony lies directly adjacent to East Frisia. Idyllic fen houses and 40 km of canals with romantic swing bridges, drawbridges and museum vessels at anchor lend this seaport city a very distinctive appearance. At the same time, high-tech compa-nies like MEYER WERFT (a shipyard) are worth a visit. MEYER WERFT’s visitor centre enables visitors to experience the construction of ocean liners and modern shipbuilding fi rst-hand. Those interested in walking in the footsteps of the fi rst settlers of Papenburg should pay a visit to the Von Velen Anlage open-air museum. Visitors to Papenburger Zeitspeicher can experience the city’s history interactively. Cultural enthusiasts will fi nd the perfect setting for exhibitions and con-certs in the baroque Gut Altenkamp. A holiday in Papenburg also offers many outdoor activities, including biking, riding, golfi ng and hiking.

The Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim is one of the most important museums in northern Germany, and is known not only for its ancient Egyptian collection, but also for its special exhibits. 2013 is dedicated to the Romans: From 20 April until 8 September 2013, the exhibit “THE POWER OF THE TOGA: FASHION IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE” will be devoted to the political and cultural infl uence exerted by the greatest power in the ancient world on its conquered regions, which is also refl ected in attire. The toga stood at the centre as a symbol of power and domination. With exhibits from museums around the world, including world-famous frescoes from Pompeii, the “gens togata” (the toga-wearing nation) comes back to life.

The Torhaus-Galerie features frequent changing exhibi-tions of contemporary art. The gallery is operated by the Braunschweig Association of Artists, but it also presents work from other German and international artists. The neoclassical building that once housed the customs house on Humboldtstraße is located close to the city centre and forms a striking contrast with the contemporary works dis-played. This is a place to enjoy and acquire works of art, and to meet the artists themselves on certain days.

A shady fellow makes his home here, right on Fairy Tale Road – the Pied Piper. Experience him and his magic, but also the incomparable old town of Hameln. The gorgeous sandstone and half-timbered buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries are a true crowd-puller. With its ornate, brightly coloured townhouses, the town centre is like an open-air museum, but it’s also the vital heart of the city at the same time. The Pferdemarkt is where the Bäckerstraße and Osterstraße shopping promenades meet, and where the Pied Piper open-air performance is held in the summertime. Visitors can admire the unique Pied Piper Theatre in the recently renovated Hameln Museum. In the historical Pulverturm, glass blowers put on a fi ery show, while boats set out on interesting voyages from the jetty.

Contact Schaumburger LandSchaumburger Land is a region of Niedersachsen between Lake Steinhude, Schaumburg forest, Westphalia, and the Weser river with the Weser mountains and the Deister hills. It emerged in the Middle Ages as a territory of the Counts of Schaumburg and is an ancient and very rich cultural landscape. Shaped by its cultural diversity, Schaumburger Land is a destination for outdoor en-thusiasts, culture vultures and gastronomes, offering outdoor activities including numerous themed cycling routes, hiking and pilgrimage trails and “culture routes” to a number of places worth discovering. Schaumburg’s notable gastronomic scene, which includes some top restaurants, is a pleasurable complement to every stay. Wilhelm Busch, creator of the well-known characters Max and Moritz, also known as the “father of the comic”, was born in 1832 in Wiedensahl in present-day Schaumburg, and lived for more than 40 years in the quiet seclusion of his native village.

The Bückeburg Princely School for Riding Art was reo-pened in 2004 and is the only institution of its kind in Germany. The stables are home to 18 stunning princely stallions. Visitors can learn more about the history of the equestrian arts in the adjacent Marstallmuseum. The training stallions are paraded in the Reithaus, a build-ing dating back to 1610. The courtly riders celebrate all the gentleness and love of European aristocratic horse-manship in authentic Baroque period costumes. Perfectly formed and full of zeal, these majestic Baroque stallions perform their artful ballet to the sound of classical music accompanied by the captivating commentary of the master horseman – a total work of art unique in the world.

The center is a modern attraction in the Harz mountains that illustrates geological history and showcases a high-light of European cave archaeology: The Iberg Dripstone Cave has been visited frequently since 1874 by tourists in search of subterranean fascination. The “Museum on the Mountain” is blasted out of the rock and brings to life the Iberg’s long northward journey from its original position as a coral reef in the south seas. The “Museum on the Mountain” is dedicated to the Bronze Age dead found in the Lichtenstein Cave. UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES

UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage

The Wadden Sea, the world’s largest and most sig-nificant tidal wetland biotope and rest stop for over 10 million migratory birds annually, has been rec-ognised as a transboundary World Heritage site. The area encompasses 10,000 square kilometers extending from the Netherlands to Niedersachsen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The Wadden Sea was named a World Heritage site due to its ex-ceptionally rich biodiversity, with over 15,000 dif-ferent plant and animal species, and its ecological and geomorphological significance. In addition to the wadden area itself the protected zone extends to salt meadows, marsh areas, dunes, sand banks and other habitats. The world’s largest contiguous area of mud and sand flats provides such a large food supply that the Wadden Sea is indispensable as a stopover for migratory birds.

Goslar: Rammelsberg mine, Goslar old town and the Upper Harz Water Management Area

When the Rammelsberg mine outside of Goslar was shut down in 1988, it marked the end of a 1,000-year operating history. Goslar owes its wealth to the nearly 30 mil-lion tons of ore taken from Rammelsberg. Its silver and copper ores led to the founding of the Palatinate by Emperor Henry II. For over 200 years, Goslar was the residence of German emperors and kings, and became a centre for the Christian faith. The city is known for its numerous churches, colourful half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. In 2010, the World Heritage site consisting of the Upper Harz Water Management Area, which was built in the early 13 th century by Cistercian monks and expanded over the centuries by miners, received special recog-nition.

Hildesheim: St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Michael

Hildesheim Cathedral and the former Ben-edictine abbey church of St. Michael are exceptional sites for religious art in the Holy Roman Empire. These two buildings belong-ing and the artistic treasures they hold were recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1985. Combined, both neighboring and historically connected churches convey an overview over the design and fitting of a romanesque church interior, comprehen-sively as nowhere else.

Fagus factory in Alfeld

The Fagus factory in Alfeld was in-cluded on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2011. The factory represents the original work of mod-ernist industrial architecture and a specimen from the “New Objectivity” movement. It was the first major build-ing by Walter Gropius, later known as a famous Bauhaus architect, who was hired by the industrialist Carl Bensc-heidt to build a shoemaker’s last fac-tory. A glass and steel construction and unsupported, fully windowed cor-ners made it a hallmark for the new brand of architecture, giving the three-storey building facade a weightless el-egance. Shoemaker’s lasts are still made today at the Fagus factory.

For more information visit:www.fagus-gropius.com

Walking tours of the city for individuals and groups, and select tours in a number of foreign languages. Also under-ground guided tours in Rammelsberg mine and “water hiking trails” at the Upper Harz Water Management Area open air museum. Further info and contact data are listed on page 55.

Walking tours of the city for indi-viduals and groups, in a number of foreign languages. Further info and contact data are listed on page 41.

The Fagus-Gropius exhibition occupies 3,000 m² on eleven fl oors of the former factory warehouse, informing visitors all about wood as a material, wood processing and 100 years of footwear fashions.

The Wadden Sea can be experienced on various – also educational – activities whilst being accompanied by pro-fessional guides. Many local visitor centres take you along on your personal discovery tour.
