SAFETY MOMENT
“ To prevent backing accidents, plan ahead and avoid backing whenever possible. Drivers should reduce backing operations in the first place.
(Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program) ”
Backing With Your Company Vehicle
The Field Sales Team in recent months has had 3 preventable vehicle accidents where they have backed into a fixed object at their homes
There have been 5 total vehicle accidents YTD, increasing Preventable TVAR to 1.98 and increasing Total TVAR to 3.31. Total cost ~$3,000.00.
When you must back up as a last resort, the following tips will help you avoid collisions:
• Continuously check all mirrors when backing • Always back slowly while continuously looking and listening for trouble
signs • Try to position the vehicle to avoid backing • If backing cannot be avoided it is better to back in upon arrival • Conduct a visual walk around of the vehicle to check for hazards • When available, use a spotter • Do not fully trust vehicle backup sensors and cameras
