Projectsarethevehicleforeconomicgrowthinthiscountryandworldwide,soourabilitytodeliverthemwelliscriticaltoourfutureprosperity.WiththelaunchinMayofour Register of Chartered Project Professionals and a major programme of research and thoughtleadership,APMisinthevanguardofkeydevelopmentsfortheprofession.

Lookingatthesurveyresults,itisexcellenttoseethepositivebackingrespondentsgivetothegrowthoftheirprofessionandanticipationoftheimpactCharteredProjectProfessionalswillhaveontheirprofession’sstatus.

Withanet60percentofrespondentsbelievingthefutureoftheprofessionwillbeenhancedby2030and69percentofrespondentsbelievingtheadventofthecharteredstandardwillseeanincreaseintheperceptionofprojectmanagement;thereisaclearsenseofoptimisminthisreport’sfindings.

Asacharteredbody,oneofourkeyobjectivesistoraiseawarenessoftheprofessionandtoencouragemorepeopletoconsideritasacareer,especiallynowasafirstchoice,soitisencouragingtoseeasixpercentriseinthosewhohavejuststartedout in the profession.

Asaprofessionwestillhaveourchallenges.Thegenderwagegapremainsat30percentandtheimpactofmega-trendssuchasdigitalwillrequireustoadaptandchangeinhowweoperate.Thereisstillmuchworktobedone.

Overall,thefuturelookspositivewith66percentexpectingpayrisesandgrowthacrosstheirorganisationsdespiteamorechallengingexternaleconomicpicture;thebenefitsofbeingpartofsuchathrivingprofessionareevident.

Summary

Once again this is one of the largest surveys of its kind for our industry and provides an important reference for all of us.

Andtheheadlines?Averagesalaryis£47,500andaveragecontractordayrateis£450.Interestinglytwo-thirdsofrespondentsbelievetheirincomewillincreaseoverthenext12monthsalthoughone third are likely to change employer. A very positive outlook doesrunthroughmuchofthedatawithhalfofrespondentsstatedthattheirorganisationisgrowingandlookingtorecruitwith42per cent backing this up further by saying the economic prospects in relation totheirowncompanyareexcellentorgood.WhenaskedforasimilarappraisalofthewiderUKeconomythissenseofoptimismdoesshrinkdownto24percent.

Finally,themostimportantskillforaprojectpractitioner?Stakeholder management and communication came top of the list.Afterall,itspeopleandgreatteamworkthatdeliverprojects.Wehaven’tbeenreplacedbyrobots…notyetanyway.

About the survey

This is the fourth annual Salary and Market Trends Survey run by APM. Since its launch in 2015 the research has received more than 18,700 responses from the profession, enabling APM to build up a clearer picture of trends and emerging demands.

ThesurveywasundertakenbyYouGovandsupportedbyWellingtone Project Management. Respondents to this survey come from across the profession and include both APM and nonAPMmembers.Thedataallowsprojectprofessionalsandemployers to benchmark themselves against others in the industrytoseehowtheycompare,paintingacomprehensivepicture of the profession in 2018.

ThesurveywasconductedbetweenDecember2017andFebruary2018andreceivedmorethan5,000responses.

Forthefirsttimethisyear,thesurveyalsoexplorestheeconomicexpectationsoftheprofession:whataffectrespondentsexpectBrexitwillhaveontheircareersandtheirexpectationsfortheirorganisations and the economy in the future.

Acrossthesurvey,therewasevidenceofapinchinwagescomparedtopreviousyears.Longercontractsoflowervalueandamarkedincreaseinyoungerprofessionalsrespondingtothesurveyhasseentheaveragesalaryfallfrom£50,000in2016to£47,500in2018.However,therewasa13percentincreaseinunder-35searningmorethan£35,000.

Experienceremainedkey.Forty-sixpercentofthosewithtwoyears’experienceorfewerreportedearninglessthan£35,000,whereas28percentofrespondentswith21to30yearsintheprofessionearnedmorethan£70,000.

The profession continues to offer excellent starting salaries forthoseinjuniorroles,whoallreportedearningabove£20,000. Those in project support on averageenjoyed£27,500,whileproject administrators received onaverage£22,500.

Looking to the more senior roles,programmeandprojectofficemanagers continued to earn abovetheprofession’saveragesalary,enjoying£57,500onaveragewhileprogrammeandportfolio managers exceeded anaverageof£60,000.

Earnings by gender

The gender wagegapremainsin the profession. Onaverage,womencontinued to earn 30 per cent less than men. Resultsshow49percentofwomenearnedlessthan£40,000,compared to just 27 per cent of men. Changing attitudesinindustry,returnship programmes andflexibleworkingopportunities may contribute to a gradual decreaseinthewagegap in the future.

Thehighestsalarieswereseen in the energy and utilitiessector,with29percent reporting earning £70,000ormore.Thiswasfollowedbyretailandwholesaleandtheconstruction and the built environment at 24 per cent.

Theprofessioncontinuestoenjoyhighlevelsofsatisfaction,witharound80percentofrespondentsclaimingtobesatisfiedintheirroles.

Those from Northern Island and the North West of England claimed to bemostsatisfied,posting85percentand84percentrespectively.However,itwasthecompanydirectorswhoweremostsatisfiedat91per cent of respondents.

Therewasamuchlesspositivesentimentwhenrespondentswereaskedaboutthewidereconomicprognosisfortheeconomyasawhole,withjust24percent feeling positive and 42 per cent negative. This mayreflectthesentimentthatprojectmanagementisadesired skill set in times of transformation and change. Youngerpractitioners,however,aremuchmoreoptimistic than their older counterparts.

Impact of Brexit

Since2017therehasbeenafivepercentagepointincreaseto52percentofthosewhobelieveBrexitwillhaveneitheranegativeorpositiveimpactontheircareer.Thisshowsthattwoyearsafterthevote there is still considerable uncertainty about theprocessofexitingtheEU.However,26percentstillbelieveditwouldhaveanegativeimpact–doublethenumberwhobelieveditwouldhavea positive impact.

Most markets appeared toviewBrexitnegatively.Theretail/wholesaleandeducationsectorsweremost negative about Brexit.

How long have you been in your current role as a contractor?

What is your current contract length?

2016sawasurgeofnewcontractorsembarkingonnewcontracts.Thiswasreflectedinthefiguresfor2018,withafourper cent increase in the number ofpeoplewhohadbeenintheircurrent contracts for six to 12 months. There had also been a fivepercentriseinthosefourtosix months into their contract.

Halfofallcontractorswereworkingoncontractsofmorethan12months,upsixpercenton2015.Therewasagrowingtrendtowardslongercontractsand responses suggested that longercontractswereputtingpressure on day rates compared to four years ago.

While people are much more likely to workascontractorsbychoiceratherthanduetoredundancy,respondentstothe2018surveyflaggedthatmanyattractiverolesonofferwereonlyavailableonacontractualbasis.Thebenefitstheysawincludedcareerprogressionopportunities and not having to get involved in corporate bureaucracy.

Careerchoiceandfinancialincentivesremained key drivers.

Contractorswereamongstthemostoptimistic of respondents to the survey. Asindividualstheyweretwiceaslikelytobelieveeconomicprospectswouldbeexcellent for their overall career compared tothesurvey’saverage.

Contractorswerealsofourpercentmoresatisfiedwiththeirrolecomparedtothesurvey’saverage,despitejusthalfexpecting a pay increase in the next 12 monthscomparedtothesurvey’saverageof66percent.

Skills and qualifications

Thehealthsectorsawthehighestproportionofprofessionalswithamaster’sdegreeorpostgraduatecertificate(48percent),followedbythe education sector (41 per cent).

A greater percentage of females held undergraduate degrees comparedtomen,at38percentcomparedto31percent.JusttwopercentofrespondentsheldaPhD.

Whensearchingforanewrole,salaryremainedkeyformany,with29 per cent claiming it as the most importantfeaturewhenlookingforanewroleand84percentlistingit as an important factor. For young people,traininganddevelopmentopportunitieswereimportantwhileolderprofessionalsweremostlikely to prioritise location.
