SIS students did a wonderful job last week to bring home 18 medals (8 being gold medals) from the Track and Field Championships. Rintaro Miyawaki was also awarded the Most Outstanding 10U Boys Athlete award for 2015. Congrats to all the athletes!

MISO Champions!

Congratulations to #sisgeckos! You make us proud! Saipan International School dominated Marianas High School in the finals, 5-1, to top the 2014-2015 MISO Boys High School Soccer League. Jehn Joyner powered the Geckos to the easy title win last Friday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field, as he made a hat-trick, which came in succession. He drilled back-to-back goals in the 31st and 41st minute to lift SIS to a 3-1 halftime edge. Jun Sik Kim scored the other goal for the Geckos with his conversion in the seventh minute. The championship victory was a good send-off for Joyner, Nam Ki Kim, Chris Park, William Fong, Andrew Johnson, and Bob Kim, who attended their graduation rites a few hours after beating the Dolphins in the finale. “I have great teammates and coaches and I wish them the best next season,” said Joyner, who got his second MISO soccer championship with the Geckos after having his first during his freshman year. Joining the six SIS seniors on the champion team were Hwan Ho (Bob) Kim, Jun Young Kim, Dong Gu Hyon, Dong Hee Im, Kennedy Izuka, Chanwoo Jeong, WooJin Bark, Myung Jae Cho, Hyeong Chang Im, Timothy Park, Hyun Jun Chung, and Chang Jun Sung. International School for finishing 5th place in the

MathCourt State Competition on Saturday. With over two hundred 2nd and 3rd graders competing throughout the 4 months of competition you have done a wonderful job snagging 5th place. Also in the MathCourt State Competition were SeoHee Lee, Claire Park (G3) and Eric Hwang (G1). Thanks to all the competitors for showing up on time, not missing a MathCourt meet and coming prepared. You have made SIS proud.

Named in honor of the famous debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in 1858, the Lincoln-Douglas debate is one of the many extracurricular activities SIS offers. Many upcoming freshmen and sophomores may look for extracurricular activities to boost their resume to get into selective colleges. If you would like to explore these opportunities, you should consider Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate. In order to help students who might want to know about LD, I Interviewed Mr. Tessen, who provides guidance to LD debaters.

“What is Lincoln-Douglas Debate?” “It is an affirmative and negative competition, so you have one person arguing the affirmative of a particular resolve and you have one person who argues the negative. Each side gets to give their contentions—their arguments. After the contentions the opponents gets to cross examine them. After the both had the chance to cross examine, you then go to rebuttals. In rebuttals, you should build up your argument and knock down the opponent’s argument. The affirmative [side] gets two rebuttals and negative gets one. At the end, one or more judges will fill out a ballot, and it will indicate to the debaters how well they did, and announce the winner. “What do you want to say to the prospective debaters? “It’s hard. It’s definitely not easy, but it’s very rewarding. On the first day, about 2/3 of the people who want to find out about LD leave. The 1/3 like it a whole lot. We had several people win the nationals, several people win the Covenant Day debate. So we’ve been very successful, but it is time consuming and it is intellectually difficult... I don’t want any juniors joining if they haven’t done it before.” Not so long ago was the last Lincoln-Douglas Debate competition for this school year. Congratulations to Stephanie and Cerinn who won second and third place in the Regionals. It is an activity highly appreciated by the colleges as it is an academically inclined activity and I advise freshmen and sophomores to try out. !Keep up the good work debaters!

ETC’s are very important to us. If you own a business on Saipan, you have an opportunity to directly help any school on the island through Public Law 10-73. 1. Write a check to SIS between $10 and $5,000. 2. SIS will give you a receipt.
