The Holy Family
GOSPEL MEDITATION The Holy Family December 29, 2019
“‘Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.’” 725 kilometers. That’s the distance on modern roads from Bethlehem to Cairo. Assuming one covered 40km a day on foot — ambitious for two young parents and their infant son — the journey would take well over two weeks. Of course, the Holy Family didn’t have modern roads. They would travel through wilderness, fear bandits, run low on water, and cross the vast Sinai Peninsula in a reverse of their forefathers in Exodus. Here, in struggle and sacrifice, are the beginnings of the forging of the Holy Family.
“Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod.” Large Jewish communities existed in most major cities of the ancient Mediterranean world, after the collapse of their kingdoms chronicled in the Old Testament, and Joseph could likely find work as a carpenter. All the same, today’s Gospel reminds us that the first formational years of Jesus as a babe-in-arms were spent in a strange land. The members of the Holy Family were foreigners, outsiders, immigrants.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God took on our humanity. He is in solidarity with our own trials and difficulties. On the feast of the Holy Family, we honor the special place of the family within society. We are invited, too, to recall those families who share in the struggles of the Holy Family in a particular way. We pray for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. We pray for all parents who sacrifice their own well-being and comfort so their children may have a better life.

From Rachael CzepyhaFrom the Desk of Mrs. Izzi
I hope you all enjoyed a very blessed Christmas! Our classes for grades K-5 will resume again on January 6, 2020. I wish you all a very Happy New Year!
Thank you, Bishop Tobin, for joining us today and welcoming Father Andrew into our Parish. For the short time Father Andrew has been with us we have felt so much love and dedication from him and we can’t wait to continue to work with him and celebrate our sacraments that are yet to come this year.
A New Year’s Prayer
Remember us, O God;from age to age be our comforter.
You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights,
seasons and years.Bless your children at the
turning of the yearand fill the months ahead with t
he bright hopethat is ours in the coming of Christ.
You are our God, living and reigning, forever and ever.
Amen.
This weekend is Father Andrew’s Installation Mass and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for his leadership to the St. Rose community. Father Andrew has made a great effort to be present in our building since his appointment as Pastor and has demonstrated his support for the school as well as the parish. During this month of December, he led pupils and teachers in prayer during our Advent services and also attended our Christmas concert and Breakfast with Santa. We are blessed to have Fr. Andrew as our new Pastor, and I look forward to working with him for years to come.
While December was busy at school with both a visit from St. Nick and Santa, we were able to organize our Geography Bee. This competition was implemented into the school by our Social Studies teacher Mrs. Foggo last school year. I want to thank Mrs. Foggo for again organizing this event. It is a very educational opportunity for our students. Congratulations to the following pupils for qualifying for the school competition: Grace Powers, Rhyana Ostras (Grade 4), David Izzi, Sophie Gendreau (Grade 5), Nora Armstrong, Maddie Iozzi, Madison Bianco, Evan Perez, Claire Damiano, Jackson Kretzer, Jordan French (Grade 6), Michael Carreiro, Logan Toussaint, Alex Arnold, Elaina Bartolini, Deirdra Picillo, Mary McMahon, Tim Wishart, Talia Soares (Grade 7) and – Calista Aguinaldo and Charles Kretzer (Grade 8). Alex Arnold was our winner and will represent St.Rose of Lima School at the State Geography Bee!
