Gospel Background Sometimes it may seem that circumstances in our life are testing our faith and trust in God. In today’s gospel, Jesus first asks: "Whom do men say that the Son of Man is?" gauging the opinion of those, like us, the common people. He doesn’t say whom do the Scribes and Pharisees say that I am? but, whom do men say that I am? For although their opinion concerning Christ was below what it ought to have been, yet it was free from wickedness as was the opinion of the Pharisees and Scribes. Having given Him the opinion of the common people, He then, in order to plumb the depth of their understanding, asks the disciples a second question, looking for higher thoughts concerning Him, “Whom do you say that I am?" That is, you who are with Me always, and have seen greater miracles than these, ought not to agree in the opinion of the multitudes. Where as many of the disciples answered the first question it was Peter who issues the definitive declaration of faith “You are the Christ the son of the living God.” Through the gift of faith, Peter recognized Jesus as the Messiah, the son of God sent to us by the Father. The Lord Jesus tests each of us personally with the same question: Who do you say that I am? As did Sts. Peter and Paul, whom we celebrate today, we must confess, with our tongues and with our lives, that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior

Realizing that we do not have a lasting home here, we should pray and work for justice and peace in Canada and through out the world, so that ll God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. Families are encouraged to mark this day by prayer for our community and our country. Mass will be celebrated at 12:05 pm…as per usual.

June 19, 2014

Reverend and Dear Fathers and Parishioners,

I wish to thank all the parishes of the diocese for their generous donations on the occasion of my retirement. A cheque for $30,000 in the name of Sacred Heart College was presented to me last Friday at my farewell Mass. The fact that the donation is specific for our new Catholic College in Peterborough is very meaningful and hopeful for the future of the College.

Once again, thank you for your generosity. I will remember all of you in my prayers. I am confident that you will also recommend me to God in your thoughts as well.

Sincerely Yours in Christ, Most Rev. Nicola De Angelis, c.f.i.c.
