Our yearly Christmas gift outreach to the children of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Jersey City has begun.

Names of the children and of local adults available for the gift adoption program will be distributed at the main entrance located in the rear of our church AFTER ALL MASSES on the weekends of

NOVEMBER 30/DECEMBER 1 & DECEMBER 7/8.

All gifts must be NEW, WRAPPED AND TAGGED for the person you adopt. If you are unsure what to purchase for your child or adult, gift cards are also a welcome gift. All gifts must be brought to Church by Sunday, December 15th at 1PM to ensure delivery to your child by Christmas.

If you wish to make a monetary donation please send your check to our Parish Office located at 200 Jefferson Avenue, Cresskill, NJ 07626 in an envelope marked “OLS Outreach”. Finally, if you are unable to adopt a child but would still like to participate we will be happy to accept new, and in this case, unwrapped gifts which will also be sent to Our Lady of Sorrows. As always, your loving generosity is most gratefully appreciated. If you have any questions, call Nancy at 201-394-0713.

A Word from the Academy…

Thanksgiving is truly an American holiday. At the Academy of St. Therese, however, it takes on an additional reverence among the students and staff. Knowing how we are so blessed, compared to many of the children and families across New Jersey and the country, the students, their families and staff joined together to help ease the burdens of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Members of our school community donated funds for turkeys. These turkeys, along with canned goods and boxed food items filled the school stage, joining with the Parish food drive, which last year delivered over sixty baskets of food to our sister parish in Jersey City and other families in need in the area.

Of course at the Academy of St. Therese, challenging academics are addressed every day. Our third through fifth grades got an exciting opportunity to explore the habitats of a variety of animal species and a study of animals on the endangered species list with a trip to the Bronx Zoo. It is no longer the zoo where students idly walk around; today the students learn and come to appreciate the delicate balance of forces at play on our planet. After the cold snap we experienced, it was wonderful to have November 15 break with clear blue skies and temperatures reaching the low fifties for our trip.

There is probably no better time than the Thanksgiving season for students to explore the cultures, customs and religions of Native Americans. Our junior high social studies teacher, Ms. Gail Cecere coordinated the seventh grade in the presentation of our Annual Native American Day. It was a splendid example of technological research, social studies, hands-on work and oral presentations that the entire school population appreciated.

The St. Jude Math-A-Thon was scheduled on Tuesday, November 26. Students refine their academic skills while teaching them that they have the power to help others. Students across the grades come together for both a challenge and a celebration of mathematics. Our older students were faced with algebraic problems while even some of our youngest students constructed graphs and equations.

Along with our spirit of reverence and on-going focus on academics, the students at the Academy of St. Therese also enjoyed some social occasions this past week. “Grandparents/Special Persons Day,” is an exciting opportunity for our students to host their special visitors to their classrooms. Our Early Primary Wing once again enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal together where Pilgrims and Native Americans came together to share a meal, this time in the classroom, not at Plymouth Rock. Our junior high students enjoyed a Fall Harvest Dance. Thanks, as always, to our parent group, the Home-School Association, who put the dance together and chaperoned the festivities.

Warmest regards, Glenn Clark Principal
