Reflection on Gospel Sunday Meditation

The Beatitudes “Blessed are those who ….” Matthew 5:1-12a

The Beatitudes is probably one of the most read scriptures in the bible, but how many who

read it really understand the meaning. As Christ spoke to his disciples on the mountain,

the fundamental truths of his words are more profound today, than when he first spoke

them. Consider as we go through one of the most destructive climates in our world history,

the battle for good and evil could not be more profound. So, we turn to the Lord, where

all our help comes from:

• Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven… The poor in spirit are those who feel a deep sense of spiritual destitution and comprehend their nothingness before God. The kingdom of heaven is theirs, because they seek it, and therefore find and abide in it. There must be emptiness before there can be fullness, and so poverty of spirit precedes riches and grace in the kingdom of God.

• Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted… The blessing is not upon all that mourn but upon those who mourn about sin. The using of the name of God in vain for deceitful purposes, the killing of people because of the color of their skin, and the ruthlessness of destroying families so that they do not become most of the world order. They shall be comforted by the discovery and appropriation of God's pardon.

• Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth… Surly the meek and those who are humble in today’s world are seen in weak. But Jesus said, the humble would receive far greater than the arrogant and prideful. That is why this portion of the scriptures teaching us that if you are not humble, the Lord can’t use you. Not only do the meek enjoy more of life on earth because of their ability to be content, but they will possess and enjoy the earth after Jesus' return and triumphal entry.

• Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled…

Because of Christ, we can cling to the promise of everlasting righteousness in heaven. While we are called to live like Christ, we also have forgiveness of sin. So be encouraged, all the hurt and pain, will be filled with joy and gladness. We will always remember her name, that Black does not mean bad but that it matters, that children are precious no matter whose kids they are and that parents hurt when you take their children away. One day, this will all pass away because God is who he is.

• Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy… How many of us can say that they are perfect? How man can say they don’t need to be merciful because they haven’t ever done anything wrong. Well, mercy is an active virtue that Christians can show to each other because we have been given mercy ourselves. Since God has forgiven our offenses, we should forgive others and show mercy.

• Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God… The pure in heart are those who are free from evil desires and purposes. They can see and experience God's presence because they are free from self-righteousness and arrogance. The Children!

• Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God… This has never been more important than today. If we can just have all who make peace between men, whether as individuals or as communities, how much better would this world be. It includes even those who worthily endeavor to make peace, though they fail of success. They shall be called God's children because he is the God of peace who sent His own Son as the Prince of Peace.

• Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…

Those who suffer because of their loyalty to the kingdom of heaven are blessed by being bound more closely to that kingdom for which they suffer. This is where each of us must be in these troubled times. Rejoice in your sadness and persecution for righteousness’ sake because God is right by your side.

MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE

PRAY AND WORK TO END THE SIN OF RACISM

(CCC 1935)

OUR FAMILY PRAYER FOR JUSTICE AND HUMAN DIGNITY

Loving and faithful God, we come to you, Father, to ask that through your Son, Jesus and in communion with the Holy Spirit, you help us in the battle against America’s “original sin” of racism that divides us from being the Body of Christ that we are called to be as your children. We implore you to give us your wisdom, so that we may build a community founded on the Gospel message of the life and dignity of all people from the womb to the tomb, and to live in communion like the divine communion of the Holy Trinity. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith, to love one another regardless of skin color, ethnicity, and national origin, just as Jesus loves us. Bless and protect all of us as we live out our faith in being “instruments of your peace” as St. Francis said. Fill us with a thirst for justice and righteousness. Hear our prayer and give us the courage, compassion, and perseverance to root out any form of injustice within our communities and to bring the healing love of Christ to all in need.

Washington Interfaith Network - Notice of Jobs at Temple Courts Construction Temple Courts, a 211 unit affordable housing building, was knocked down in 2008 by the city, scattering over 200 families across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Over the past decade, WIN has worked with former tenants to testify at community meetings, hold actions, and meet with countless District officials and developers to maximize affordability. When completed, Temple Courts will serve as an important model of mixed-income housing with hundreds of deeply affordable units. Of the 750 total units, 504 will be affordable, of which 252 will be deeply affordable priced at 30% or less of Area Median Income. The construction company, McCullough, will have over 100 new jobs in the coming months. They are offering a series of free construction readiness classes to train potential hirees. We expect the training to lead to a job. WHO? All D.C residents are eligible to sign up. Priority will be given to former residents of Temple Courts.
