TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27). Psalm — May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67). Second Reading — God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7). Gospel — The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21). THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION The blessing included in the First Reading from the Book of Numbers is one with which most of us are familiar. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you…” In the Jewish culture this has been known for centuries as the Aaronic blessing as it was dictated by God Himself to Aaron. It is important to note that it begins with “The Lord bless you.” All blessings come from God. One error we make is to conclude that blessings always mean happiness or security or prosperity. God knows what blessings we need, even if we do not. They key for us is to be grateful for whatever blessings we may have. That mind set is at the hub of stewardship — knowing all blessings come from the Lord, and our need to be appreciative of them. To be “kept” by the Lord is to turn our lives over to Him, to know that He is with us and that He loves us, blesses us, and does indeed “keep” us ever in His care. The truth is that to be blessed by God is one of the greatest gifts we can receive. It is available to all of us without exception. During this continued Christmas season, it is well to remember and repeat the classic statement by the character Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens’ immortal A Christmas Carol: “God bless us, every one,” for certainly He does.

New Year’s Resolution This year, we encourage you to make a New Year’s resolution that will make a big difference for you and St. Rose of Lima: commit to consistent giving.

This can be difficult, but we have a tool that will make it just a bit easier. Those who give online tend to give more and give

consistently. Through our secure Online Giving program, accessible from www.strosereno.com, you can set up recurring or one-time gifts, contribute to specific funds, and see your giving history at anytime.

A safe, convenient way to give the way

NOTICE ABOUT CHANGES ON FIRST FRIDAYS Dear Companions,

For almost ten years we have had First Friday Mass which included both the Anointing of the Sick and Exposition and Benediction. I am going to make some changes in that there are too many repeat anointings each month and too little participation in the Benediction service. The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament, belonging to the advanced in age, the seriously ill, and those facing surgery. The sacrament is to be celebrated ONCE for the same illness or difficulty and should not be repeated according to our Catholic instruction about that sacrament. I will no longer be anointing people at every First Friday Mass. I will schedule it on a three-month basis for that mass beginning with the March First Friday mass. (I always have asked folks who have received that anointing to contact the front office so we can record it but it is rarely done). Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the end of Mass means the Closing Prayer is the last act of the Mass before the Benediction. That means there is no final blessing or dismissal at the mass as usual. The Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is the final conclusive action of the mass on that occasion. It seems that very few are willing to stay for Adoration time and for the Benediction service at ten o’clock. I always find it awkward to try to initiate singing, serve the Rite, have an Altar Server available, and then have no one willing to intone the music for the service. Therefore, Exposition and Benediction at First Friday mass will be celebrated ONLY in June and in December on those First Fridays.

WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE A FIRST FRIDAY MASS! (Unless there is reason for the church to be closed that day). FIRST FRIDAY ANOINTING OF THE SICK IN 2017: MARCH. JUNE. SEPTEMBER. DECEMBER. FIRST FRIDAY EXPOSITION AND BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN 2017: JUNE. DECEMBER.

Blessings+ Fr. Larry

Prayer for Vocations Heavenly Father, You have created each of us to love You and your people. You have chosen some to serve by responding to the particular call to the priesthood and religious life. Send your Holy Spirit to stir the hearts of those You have designed to follow this path of spiritual leadership.

We pray this petition, faithful and most gracious God, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Padre Serra says: Whether you are in eight grade, high school or college, this is “decision time.” this year is not just another year in school, but a special time in your life. This is a great opportunity to develop your gifts and

talents. So, work hard, do and be your best. Shape your own dreams and goals by using the rich talent with which the Lord has blessed you. As you look at your future, consider a life of service in the Church. Think seriously about taking at least a part of your life and giving it to other people in the name of our Lord and through the Church. Even more than that, consider priesthood, sisterhood and the religious life. What a great contribution you could make to the world and God’s people! Have a great year in school. Do your best. Make your education have such a positive effect on you that other people in this world will benefit from you and your talent. In the meantime, in your daily prayers, pray for your vocation. ISSUES OF PEACE & JUSTICE “Peace on earth and goodwill toward mankind” – is this not what people long for? “In order to build up peace above all, the causes of discord among

humanity, especially injustice, which foment wars, must be rooted out. Not a few of these causes come from excessive economic inequalities and from putting off the steps needed to remedy them. Other causes of discord, however, have their source in the desire to dominate and in a contempt for persons. And, if we look for deeper causes, we find them in human envy, distrust, pride, and other egotistical passions. Mankind cannot bear so many ruptures in the harmony of things. Consequently, the world is constantly beset by strife and violence between humans, even when no war is being waged. Besides, since these same evils are present in the relations between various nations as well, in order to overcome or forestall them and to keep violence once unleashed within limits it is absolutely necessary for countries to cooperate more advantageously and more closely together and to organize together international bodies and to work tirelessly for the creation of organizations which will foster peace… If an authentic economic order is to be established on a world-wide basis, an end will have to be put to profiteering, to national ambitions, to the appetite for political supremacy, to militaristic calculations, and to machinations for the sake of spreading and imposing ideologies” (Gaudium et spes #83 & #85).

Find Your Catholic Voice - Bodily Resurrection? - No Way!. Still considering the cultural context of Resurrection: for non-Jews, Greco-Roman thinking held that the soul or spirit was good and the physical and material world was weak, corrupt, and

defiling. The physical, by definition, was always falling apart and therefore salvation was seen as liberation from the corruptible body. In this worldview resurrection was not simply impossible it was repulsive. No soul, once free of the body, would want to return to it. Even those who believed in reincarnation understood that returning to embodied life meant that the soul was not yet out of its prison. The ultimate goal was to be free of the confining body forever. Also of note, historians find that in all the societies studied in this respect, beliefs about life after death are very conservative. Faced with the drama of death, people tend to build upon beliefs and practices they know, and are familiar and comfortable with; where they came from; how their tradition, their family, their village, has always performed burial customs. Communities or groups of people are highly unlikely to come up with inventive understandings about the nature of death. Consequently, it is remarkable that all the early Christians believed in a future bodily resurrection, even though most came from the pagan world. A world, a culture, where this was regarded as complete and utter rubbish. The Christian view of resurrection is unprecedented in history, and sprang up full-blown immediately after the death of Jesus. There was no development of thought here. It was not merely a subtle new twist that evolved out of any thinking prevalent at the time. In Christ, Ken.
