Saint Rafka Maronite 6th Sunday of Pentecost On this Sunday of the Season of Pentecost we stand in witness to the act of Jesus’ sending of his Shleehe (apostles) as healers, as we read in the Gospel. We are introduced to one of the precious gifts of the Holy Spirit (and a manifestation of God’s presence) within Christ’s community: the gift of healing. The saints, like saint Sharbel, who follow in the Apostles footsteps continue to share this healing gift of Christ with the world. From early Christian times our Syriac Church Fathers spoke of the powers of spiritual healing as Medicines. The Eucharist was described as the Medicine of Life, along with Anointing, for they contained within them the healing powers of Christ’s redeeming Spirit of love. On this Sunday of the Season of Pentecost we stand in witness to the act of Jesus’ sending of his Shleehe (apostles) as healers, as we read in the Gospel.

The Eucharist was described as the Medicine of Life, along with Anointing, for they contained within them the healing powers of Christ’s redeeming Spirit of love.

spirits. The Qolo of Thursday of the Apostles and Evangelist declares:

Our Lord Jesus called his apostles, and gave them power to overcome unclean spirits and to heal all sickness

Likewise we who have received the Spirit have been cleansed, and continue to be cleansed – by our free will and participation – through the saving works of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Through these Medicines the Spirit reveals and uncovers for us the powers of God’s redeeming love hidden in our midst. They make Jesus the healer yet again present among us – in a new way – and who requires from us faith and prayer. Like the Apostles who had Jesus with them in the boat, asleep, so too we have Christ’s powers dormant within us (individually and in community) waiting to be resuscitated.

With such potent healing powers there is no reason to despair at any time; or to think that some of our hurts in life are too much to be healed from. Rather, we need to submit ourselves to Christ’s Spirit to let her be our divine resuscitator – through Christ’s powers dormant within us.

Meanwhile, God sends us to each other, and to our fellow human sojourners, to activate – to raise-up in faith – this healing and life-giving power of the divine gift of the Holy Spirit among us.

Pastoral Visit of Bishop Francis Kalabat Bishop Francis Y. Kalabat, Eparchy of the Saint Thomas the Apostle, will make a visit to our community this weekend, July 7 - 9, There will be a spiritual conference on Friday evening and the Chaldean Divine Liturgy on Sunday at 11 AM.

The Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Saint Thomas the Apostle of Detroit (Latin: Eparchia Sancti Thomas Apostoli Detroitensis Chaldaeorum) is located with the cathedral episcopal see of Our Lady of Chaldeans Cathedral, located in Southfield, Michigan, United States. It was created by Pope John Paul II on January 11, 1982 as the Apostolic Exarchate of United States of America for the Chaldeans, covering the entire United States. It was elevated to an eparchy, an Eastern-rite Catholic diocese, led by an eparch (bishop) on August 3, 1985. On 21 May 2002 it lost vast territory to establish the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Saint Peter the Apostle of San Diego.

The eparchy still governs thirteen parishes, ten of which are located in Michigan and two that are located in Illinois. On Saturday, May 3, 2014, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Ibrahim Namo Ibrahim as Eparch of the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle of Detroit, and appointed the Reverend Father Francis Y. Kalabat as Eparch-elect. Eparch-elect Kalabat was born in Kuwait, on May 13, 1970. In 1989, he began undergraduate (philosophy) studies at the Seminary of Saint Francis, in San Diego, California. Subsequently, he began the requisite graduate theological training for the Chaldean Catholic priesthood at the Major seminary of the Sacred Heart, in Detroit, Michigan. Ordained a priest on July 5, 1995, he was appointed Parochial Vicar (Associate Pastor) of Mother of God Church in Southfield, Michigan, the city where the Eparchy has its Cathedral. Since 2001, Eparch Kalabat has been Pastor of Saint Thomas Church in Detroit, Director of Vocations for the

Eparchy, and has been involved with the Center for Re-Evangelization. He speaks Arabic, English and Chaldean, and knows Spanish and Aramaic. He received his episcopal ordination and was installed as Eparch on June 14, 2014.

Abouna’s CornerDear Parishioners and Friends,

NAM convention is now history and we are basking in the afterglow! To the MANY who spent countless hours of work at tasks, great and small, thank you! I will be a bit more specific at the 11 AM Divine Liturgy, but there were many who worked so tirelessly to make this convention a success. Thanks! I think we put our mission on the map this past week!

Lisa Advent has placed many pictures of the NAM Convention online. These photos can be view at: nam2017strafka.shutterfly.com

This weekend, we welcome Bishop Francis Kalabat into our midst. Bishop Francis is the Chaldean bishop of the Eparchy of Saint Thomas of the Chaldeans in Detroit. Please remember that Sayedna will give a spiritual conference on Friday night in the Church and will celebrate the 11 AM Liturgy in Chaldean rite. Join us and hear this dynamic bishop in our midst.

I know that many of you will be on vacation soon. I beg you to remember that even on vacation, we have the obligation to assist at the Divine Liturgy or Mass in the Latin Rite. God has indeed blessed each of us and we can give him proper honor and worship for one hour a week, even when we travel. See the sites further back in the bulletin to find Masses where ever you may be!

The Summer months bring a slowdown to the events at the parish. Once September rolls around, lots of activities will begin and some new ones will blossom forth. Keep an eye out for details!

Enjoy the hot and humid days of Summer. Before we know it, the kids will be back in school and patio furniture will be put away. Enjoy the leisure!

See you in Church!

Ab. Bart
