PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018

A note from

Father Tom

PENTECOST!

From that historical moment of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which we celebrate to this day in which we pray that we be open and the Holy Spirit come, God has made divine power and our salvation known! “Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me ” (John 7: 38) That power and sal-vation which God reveals is meant for us, and meant to flow through and from us who believe. This weekend we welcome Christian Cortes to our parish family. I look forward to sharing these weeks of life and ministry with him. One person dis-cerning the call to ordained ministry and sharing those gifts which are his, gifts being formed for such ministry for our sake can, indeed, become water for our thirst. We, in turn, can become food for the strength that God will ask of him. Christian, welcome! On this great Solemnity of Pentecost I also would like to highlight and pray for those who are sharing in our pilot experience of “Alpha.” This ex-perience of faith sharing and evangelization is an ini-tiative that was embraced by the Parish Council after considering the needs of our parish and community and the several formats “out there” that we might use. I do believe that it has been a positive and fruitful ex-perience to date. On this feast when we celebrate the Gifts of the Holy Spirit I invite you to pray for this group who are praying for and preparing to serve us all in the seasons to come! And on this extraordinary day, I want to thank the young people and the adults who have journeyed with them in our Edge and LifeTeen communities. May the gifts you are discovering be gifts that will grow within in and gifts that you will continue to share. And our Loretto crew = See you for our summer week! To us all, “Peace be with you!” (John 20: 21)

Fr. Tom

Obligatory Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church

A “notification” from the Church’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has clarified that the new Obligatory Memorial of the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, must be celebrated in the Ordinary form of the Roman Rite Beginning this year. The new feast is to be observed on the Monday following Pentecost which, this year is Monday, May 21, 2018. The new feast was inserted into the Universal Calen-dar of the Latin Church earlier this year by Pope Francis, in a decree dated February 11, 2018—the 160th anniversary of the apparition of Mary at Lourdes. The title of “Mother of the Church” was fa-mously bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary by Blessed Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council. The understanding of Mary’s motherhood has developed in the decades following Vatican II, especially as the Church has reflected on the Coun-cils teaching about Mary in chapter of the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church. (Lumen Gentium) We welcome the opportunity to share in the Church’s celebration of this memorial of our Lady on Monday morning May 21st at 8:00am.

How about making a Cursillo weekend?

Cursillo or "short course in Chris-tianity" is an uplifting and educa-tional experience. Cursillo was brought from Spain to the United States in 1962. The weekend is facilitated by a team of laypeople

and clergy who deliver organized talks and discus-sions. What the presenters add to the talks is the wit-ness of their own lives, their struggles and triumphs in Christ. The weekend is full of laughter, prayer, great music, wonderful meals and so much more. Our 2018 dates are: Men’s - June 14-17; Women’s - October 25-28. All weekends will be held at the Immaculate Con-ception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. For additional information, please contact Sue Leighton at 508-278-3155 or [email protected] OR Joan Laracy at 774-239-2474 or [email protected].

on Thursday Morning after the

Loreto Summer Week Summer Week Confirmation forms have been sent out. Please return them as soon as possible. Volunteers are still needed. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Patty @ st.petersloreto@gmail. com or by contacting the Religious Ed Office 508-234-6355

The Edge middle school youth ministry met Tuesday to end their season of Sacraments. We had dinner together and played a few games before ending our night awarding the prizes for the ticket game. We had a good time and will miss our Edge nights until we return in the fall. The Edge kids are invited to join us as helpers for the Lo-reto summer week at the end of June. Many kids have al-ready volunteered. If you child has volunteered, you will receive an email with what to expect. If you’d like your child to be part of our leadership team for Loreto summer week, give Leeann a call at the office 508-234-6355 or text 508-864-5127. Thank you to our wonderful core team: Patty, Chris, Audra and Dan for a great year. You’re the best! Have a wonderful summer.

The lifeteen group will enjoy a social night with their fami-lies and the families of the new lifeteen kids who will be join-ing us in the fall this Sunday evening at 6pm in the youth room. We will have a potluck style cookout dinner. Please bring your favorite side dish and join us if you are in lifeteen or will be in the fall. We have a really fun activity planned for after the meal.
