“From the Pastor” I am writing about things that are not surprising and many of you will recognize, but I need to
write this now or it won’t make it into the newsletter, and it is what I have been thinking about
for the last two weeks. We are on a ship with perhaps 4,000 other people, most of who are
here on “vacation”; the rest are those making the trip possible. We are headed south on the
North Sea. It is partly cloudy with the wind blowing about 45 knots. I keep hoping that we
will be able to see the White Cliffs of Dover when we pass – but probably not. I do know that
this sailor would want no parts of sailing in the wind (45 knots or so) with choppy seas. But
that is not what I set out to write about.
I set out to write about the people whose lives have touched me in some way in the past two
weeks – mostly not the people giving instructions or moving us along, and not the cabin
steward who says, “Good morning, Raymond!” (I keep telling myself that I will stop him one
of these times and say, “its Carl”, but I suspect that he would take it wrong. This is about
people who I met for however brief a time. There was a couple from Michigan who apparently
met at work because they both worked IT for a big insurance group. Then there was the
couple who worked IT for a company in Boston… the nurse who got tired of nursing and went
back to school in middle age to work in, you guessed it, Information Technology. Begins to
sound like a theme doesn’t it? But then there was the doctor from Columbia, South America
who lives and works in Miami… the retired trial lawyer from Buffalo… the retired couple
from Michigan… the Chinese Americans who moved to California from New Jersey to be
near their children and are adjusting very slowly and uncertainly. Then there was a retired
couple from Michigan with endless health issues but looked healthy enough to just keep doing
it… and the couple from England just outside London who has been on cruises all over the
world. The common issue over and over again upon finding out about me was religion… the
lapsed Lutherans who had been surprised by the Lutheran Churches in Scandinavia… the
Roman Catholics who wanted to know about Lutherans and talk about the troubles in the
Roman Catholic communion. Every couple or individual has had something different to
share.
There were two incidents that I will never forget. We were more or less lost… not lost but
uncomfortable in London on our first day. We had interacted with countless people to find
different modes of transportation and finally took a subway which would require several
transfers onto the busses when we got closer to Heathrow Int’l Airport and our hotel. There
were two Sikhs from South Asia who were residents of England who aided our journey.
The first was a bus driver who took time with us to suggest a route that would get us where we
needed to go but understanding his accent caused me to misinterpret the transfer point. (con’t)
2
There were countless people who helped us sort that out and another Sikh with turban and up-
curved pointed shoes right out of a Bollywood movie sat across from me on the subway and
when passenger movement caused him to move next to me finally helped make sense of the
directions. Still I had no address for the hotel and when we got on the final double decker bus
sorting out my query became the business of everyone from the driver to people seated behind
him…. And together they managed to get me and Karen off right in front of the hotel.
Finally, on one of my waterfall tours, I had climbed down to the bottom to get pictures and
then around to the top taking photos all the way. At the very top level I was confronted by a
24-inch high ledge…. There had to be another way… I was sure that I could not make the
ledge carrying the camera, but I started nonetheless and with one leg extended higher than I
would be able to make it, a hand reached out to me from above, a woman at least my age
would be the one to steady me for that final step… For me that generous hand will continue to
carry the best of a trip which was filled with the best of humanity. For it all, I will always
give thanks. We are not quite done, but I will always remember images of generosity.

Soup & Sandwich Thank You
November 11th
Following the Annual Congregational Meeting
The Youth Gathering group will host a Soup & Sandwich Meal after our Annual Congregational meeting on
November 11th
as a thank you to the members of St. Paul’s for their support. Join us immediately after the
congregational meeting for yummy food and fellowship. We will have multiple soup options, grilled cheese,
chips, drinks, and dessert.
We will collect a free will offering to go to the Roof Fund for Grace Tabernacle Church
in Independence Heights, TX. Our Service Day in Houston was spent in Independence
Heights, TX. Independence Heights is a historically black community that was
incorporated in the early 1900’s in order to be serviced
with water and sewer to its residence.
Last year Hurricane Harvey brought five feet of water
throughout the community as well as wind and tree
damage. There are still residence waiting to get back into their homes, the damage was
that extensive. Even so, Independence Heights is a neighborhood on the brink of
redevelopment. Spearheaded by descendants of the original settlers, the community has
come together and developed plans that will guide the neighborhood revitalization.
During our service day work, a local pastor,
Ken Hogan, came to visit and personally thank
us for what our work meant to him. We asked Pastor Hogan if we could visit
his church, so we walked the five blocks to his church.
He opened up his church to the large Gathering group, and we sat in the pews
and sang, played music, and Pastor Hogan spoke to us – it was a spiritual time
that brought many to tears. Pastor Hogan told us about how the church did not
have flood damage from Harvey but they did have wind and tree damage to
the roof – there are still tarps on the roof and very visible damage to the inside
of the church.
As an additional “Day of Service” to this very special church, we
would like to make a donation to their roof fund.
We are hoping many of our church family will help this special
church family in Texas.

Youth Sunday Message from Romper (our favorite Otter from Vacation Bible School!)
Families are an important part of the life, mission and ministry at St Paul’s. Especially the children! We welcome children and all their energy and enthusiasm! Youth are part of our church and we want them to actively participate in worship.
So, the 1st Sunday of each month is Youth Sunday! The youth have different roles throughout the service. This is a great time to invite friends and family to join you at St. Paul’s! The below schedule lists the dates and readers. Other tasks (Head Usher, Greeter, Offering ...etc) are assigned that morning. Please come to our Youth Sundays and be a part of the worship service! Although we have several different tasks for Youth Sundays, we appreciate ideas and suggestions for other possible ways to include children during the service. We
hope that being a part of the service will give them more connection with the worship experience. We want all children to feel comfortable and welcomed.

This Year in Sunday School
Sunday School started 9/16. We have 30 students enrolled this year.
We will be learning about Moses and the Ten Commandments.
We will also be teaching the students how the worship service flows and
their roles in youth Sunday services.
We are creating a reading area for the students.
Thank you to the church council and congregation for the Bible Story Books given in my honor. What
a special and wonderful gift! Ms. Susan is working on establishing a reading area for students where
they can enjoy these books and learn more about the Bible. I am looking forward to working on special
projects and to being a substitute teacher this year. Blessings, Ms. Patti

Friends in Faith Program
We are really excited about a new program we are launching here at CLS - Friends in Faith. We have paired up
congregations with specific classrooms here at the school. Over the course of the year we will share updates with
you on that class and hope that members of your congregation will be interested in sharing their experience,
talents and skills with our students as well!
Below is a letter from the classroom teacher you were paired with for the year. We think this will be an exciting
opportunity to bring the Lutheran mission in our area together in a unique way! Thank you! Kristin Brooks
Dear Members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church,
We are eager to be getting back to school at CLS!
I hope this letter finds you all enjoying the excitement of the last few days before Labor Day. This year
CLS has announced a new and exciting program, CLS Friends in Faith. Each classroom is being
partnered with a congregation from the Westminster Conference so that we can share the growth, love,
and learning that is happening over the course of the year.
My name is Mrs. Nadine Roberts. I have been teaching upper elementary and middle school grades for
eight years. This is my second year at Carroll Lutheran School, where I teach middle school ELA and
sixth grade Faith Studies. I love our school and love the opportunity to get to know every child over the
course of the year.
The sixth grade is an exciting one for our students. Throughout the year we will be learning so many
things, but a few of my favorites include writing various styles of essay formats, reading novels like
Hatchet, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and practicing public speaking. In Faith Studies, we
trace the timeline of God’s redemptive plan for mankind from Genesis through Revelation.
Sixth graders also really enjoy writing a puppet script based on a Bible story. After learning some
puppetry skills, they then perform the puppet show for a younger grade. The amount of growth these
students demonstrate over the course of the year is amazing, and I am blessed to observe it every day.
As the year goes on, we will be sending you updates on the students’ progress, some of their work, and
even some photos! Our hope is that you get to learn about our students, and that our students get to
learn about you. Does your congregation have an interesting history? Does someone have an amazing
talent or unique job? Tell us about it! You can contact our Development Director, Kristin Brooks,
[email protected] and she will get that information to our class.
We hope that you will partner with us through the power of prayer and keep our students in your
prayers over the course of the year, especially as they start their journey as sixth graders. Our class will
keep you in our prayers each day as well!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nadine Roberts
