The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

ANOINTING OF THE SICK SACRAMENT The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is offered after the 9:00am Mass on the First Saturday of each month. Those who are facing surgeries or very serious health issues can see the priest after the Mass. The Anointing will take place near the Statue of Mary at the front left of the Church. The oils are reserved in the “Olea Sancta” Repository (Holy Oils) near the Baptismal Font. Family and friends are most welcome to be present together during the Anointing.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every Friday, there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacra-ment from 8:30am-12:00pm (between the two daily Masses). Please plan on coming to pray. Be sure to pray for Peace in the Holy Land with the Peace Dove that is lit on the side altar. Prayer cards with the history of the ori-gins of the Dove and suggested prayers are in the basket by the Dove. Also, If you could sign up for an hour a week, or once a month, that would be great. Please contact the main office or see the sign up sheet at the Church en-trance. We need at least two people for each hour. This is a real blessing for the mission of the Parish, the Harvard Catholic Center and the Choir School.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

PARISH SUPPORT AND FINANCES

Our offertory this weekend, January 6 and 7 has one collection, our regular parish offertory.

As always, thank you to past and present benefactors.

Dear Friends, The January 1st Mass was a happy one. In spite of the cold (and the fact that technically this year it was not a day of obligation!) we had a good gathering of parishioners and visitors, many of whom were able to visit for coffee afterwards. Feast days honoring the Mother of God always have a special appeal. Things are slowly coming back to a normal pace. Parish meetings are in full force, the choir school boys are racing up and down stairwells, and college and graduate students are trickling in daily. Fr. Murphy attended a conference with 25 of our under-grads in Chicago this week. It was sponsored by FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) which provides such great ministry here at Harvard as well. The students, along with 6,000 others from around the country, spent time in prayer, commu-nity, and the opportunity for leadership training. Please keep these fine women and men in your prayers. I’ll share a more detailed outline over the next few weeks, but we have some great events ahead, includ-ing the official opening and blessing of our new Parish Reading Room and news about the ongoing renovation of the chapel in the Parish Center. Remember that in the Church calendar, Christmas officially concludes on Monday, January 8 with the baptism of the Lord. Though we will be taking down much of our Christmas decorations just before that because of people’s schedules, in your homes and in your hearts, continue to celebrate the Birthday of the King as the Church encourages us to do. This weekend is the Epiphany. Be sure to spend some time praying before our beautiful manger scene. God bless! Fr. Kelly

PASTORAL CARE St. Paul’s ministry to those who are sick and homebound has grown into a vibrant part of our parish community. There are three ways your help is needed. First, please consider volunteering to visit those who are sick and homebound. Second, if you, or anyone you know, is in need of a visit, please contact us. Third, please include this important ministry in your prayers, as well as our friends who are sick and homebound. For more info contact Carolyn O’Hara at [email protected] or (617) 491-8400, ext. 342.

“Brothers and sisters:

You have heard of the stewardship of God's

grace that was given to me for your benefit,

namely, that the mystery was made known

to me by revelation.” EPHESIANS 3:2-3a

ST. PAUL’S APPLE PIE BAKE-A-THON!

The St. Paul's Apple Pie Bake-a-thon is back! The Bake-a-thon is a fundraising tradition that takes place Super Bowl weekend, February 2-4, 2018. We bake and sell pies to raise funds for our parish ministries. We need you to help achieve our goal. We bake pies from scratch on Friday night and all day Saturday. Pies are sold following the Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses. If you would like to participate in this worthwhile and enjoyable tradition, please pick up a flyer in back of church or contact: Angela Jones (781) 235-1942 ([email protected]) or Mimsie Cieciuch (617) 734-7425. Per the Archdiocese of Boston, CORI forms must be filled out by all volun-teers. For more information, please contact the Parish Office at (617) 491-8400.

JANUARY 7, 2018

FOOD PANTRY With generous donations from parishioners and funds raised by the choir school, the food pantry was able to give out rotisserie chickens and cake mix for the holidays (in addition to enough kale to make kale smoothies for everyone in Cambridge). After Christmas, we will distrib-ute laundry detergent as few social service agencies are able to provide these necessities. f you receive a gift bas-ket filled with gourmet treats and there is something in-cluded that your family won't eat, consider donating it to the food pantry rather than letting it sit in your own pan-try for the next five years. The items that we need the most at this time are crackers (especially Ritz or similar), nuts, peanut butter, jelly or jam, fruit cups (4 packs), oat-meal, flavored tea, coffee (including decaf and instant), granola or cereal bars, pancake mix, and honey. Supply and demand both change regularly, but these are popular items that are currently in limited supply.

MASS INTENTIONS AT ST. PAUL’S Mass Intentions for daily and weekend Masses are being accepted. Masses may be offered to remember those who have died, for those who are ill, as well as in thanks-giving for a birthday, anniversary or for a special inten-tion. Please contact the Parish Office during the week for details and to reserve a particular Mass.

ST. PAUL’S GIVING KIOSK The St. Paul Giving Kiosk is located in the vestibule! The device offers parishioners, and visitors, a means by which to make offertory donations via credit card. All donations made through the kiosk are credited to parishioner ac-counts. Check it out today!

SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp, which burns for eight days and nights at the tabernacle, symbolizes the presence of Christ and marks the boundaries of holy space in the Church. If you are interested in learning how to donate a Sanctuary Lamp, contact Nancy at (617) 491-8400 ext. 303.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Jesus came for everyone. No one has an exclusive claim on Christ and his birth not only transcends time and space but earthly boundaries as well. Every human being is a child of God. Jews and Gentiles alike are all coheirs, partners and members of the same body. This insight or epiphany is what we celebrate today. It also expresses our hope that one day every nation on earth will recognize and adore Jesus Christ. Jesus' message of peace, justice, reconcilia-tion and love are meant for everyone to hear and under-stand.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

"Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a won-derful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we nderstand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.
