FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE GOOD NEWS
Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swi er than a weaver’s shu le; / they come to an end without hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamenta ons, not when taken alone. Most of us have been there, though, and the an dote is the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obliga on has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gospel to as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22). This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resurrec on of Jesus Christ, who li ed Simon Peter’s mother‐in‐law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our savior. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Caritas – A Parish Retreat
Usually at this time of year, there is a flurry of activity all surrounding one of our ministries – Caritas. Caritas is a retreat that is hosted by parishioners for parishioners. For one weekend in March, a number of parishioners gather to hear talks and share spiritual experiences with one another.
Much of the activity that leads up to this weekend is the preparation that goes into it. A group of parishioners come together as the Caritas Team and prepares for this weekend. The Caritas Team is made up of parishioners who have attended the retreat in the past. As the retreat is completely run by members of the parish, everything from the talks to the music and even to the snacks is prepared by the team, so there is a lot to prepare and a lot of details to think of. Generally, the retreat takes place at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center.
What happens at the Caritas Retreat? Well, it is a series of talks by members of the Caritas Team, followed by discussion. There are also liturgies, such as Prayer Services, Mass and Reconciliation. In addition, there are fun activities to help make the spiritual concepts more relatable.
What are the benefits of the Caritas Retreat? On a personal level, it is a chance to gather with other people who want to grow in their spirituality. Both the Caritas Team and the participants on the weekend may find a renewed sense of closeness to God afterwards. They also come to learn more about their fellow parishioners and feel closer to the people on the retreat.
On the parish level, the retreat can help build community among the parishioners who are on the team and also with those who attend. This building up of the Parish Community can continue long after the retreat is over. Also, some attendees will even seek to find ways that they can become a greater part of the Parish Community by getting involved in other ministries.
How can you become involved with the Caritas Retreat? Well, as explained above, only those who have attended a retreat can become part of the Caritas Team. However, any of our parishioners can attend the weekend.
During most years, interested individuals would register for the retreat right around this time of year. Unfortunately, the Caritas Retreat had to be postponed both last year and this year, due to the ongoing pandemic. It is the hope of the Caritas Team that we will be able to hold this retreat next year.

Diocesan Prayer for God’s Protection in the face of the Coronavirus Pandemic
Loving and gracious God, as in all times, we turn to You and implore Your protection and healing as we
face a new threat to our health and peaceful well-being in the coronavirus pandemic before us.
Help us to be united with each other and with all of our brothers and sisters around the world affected by this illness. We pray for all those in the medical field who are assisting patients and in the field of science who are discerning a cure, as well as for all
government leaders. Remember those who, through this virus, have passed from this life as well as their
families in their loss. At this time of fragile uncertainty, we also humbly implore You to grant us prudence, hope, courage
and patience. Dispel from us fear, panic and distrust which disrupt us in spirit to the detriment of our
well-being. We make our prayer in the name of your beloved
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who always cured those who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese,
Queen of the Apostles and Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for us, Amen.
Masses have resumed in the Church
however, if you are unable or uncomfortable attending, it is still
possible to watch Fr. Tom as he presides over daily and Sunday Mass on YouTube.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things
and I desire you with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you
as if you were already in my heart and unite myself to you completely. Please do not let me
ever be separated from you. Amen.
attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori
Anima Chris Soul of Christ, sanc fy me; Body of Christ, save me;
Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me;
Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus hear me;
Within your wounds hide me; separated from you, let me never be;
From the evil one protect me; At the hour of my death, call me;
And close to you bid me; That with your saints, I may be
praising you forever and ever. Amen.

Please Pray for All Priests
Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry. We pray that Mary will
guide your priests to follow her own words, "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5). May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary's most chaste spouse.
May the Blessed Mother's own pierced heart inspire them to embrace all who suffer at the foot of the cross.
May your priests be holy, filled with the fire of your love seeking nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.
St. John Vianney, pray for us.

"Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's special love for
the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the
life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives,
recovery of sight to the blind"(Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with "the least of these," the
hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the
poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the eucharist."
