THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God.

LA RIQUEZA DEL ESPÍRITU Los estudiantes y la mayoría de los adultos que recuerdan sus días de escuela, están familiarizados con la frase “compara y contrasta” que de tanto en tanto aparece en las pruebas. Hoy escuchamos dos relatos diferentes sobre la venida del Espíritu. Contrastemos y luego comparemos. El relato de Lucas en Hechos está lleno de detalles impresionantes: el viento poderoso, llamas de fuego como lenguas, el milagro de las diferen-tes lenguas. El relato de Juan parece tímido: discípulos temerosos, el Cristo llagado, el soplo de aliento viene de su cuerpo resucitado y no del cielo. Mientras nuestras mentes modernas y literales se preguntan de qué manera sucedió; nuestra ruidosa cultura probablemente nos hará preferir el primer relato. Pero si comparamos los dos, la deslumbrante riqueza del Espíritu llena ambos relatos, ya que es el mismo aliento del Cristo resucitado, ascendido a los cielos en Lucas, el que se aparece a sus discípulos en Juan y envía a sus seguidores a llevar a cabo su misión de perdonar los pecados y proclamar los porten-tos de Dios.

So the prayer we make to the Holy Spirit is for the grace to receive his unity, a glance that, leaving personal preferences aside, embraces and loves his Church, our Church. It is to accept responsibility for unity among all, to wipe out the gossip that sows the darnel of discord and the poison of envy, since to be men and women of the Church means being men and women of communion. It is also to ask for a heart that feels that the Church is our Mother and our home, an open and welcoming home where the manifold joy of the Holy Spirit is shared. Now we come to the second new thing brought by the Spirit: a new heart. When the risen Jesus first appears to his disciples, he says to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them” (Jn 20:22-23). Jesus does not condemn them for having denied and abandoned him during his passion, but instead grants them the spirit of forgiveness. The Spirit is the first gift of the risen Lord, and is given above all for the forgiveness of sins. Here we see the begin-ning of the Church, the glue that holds us together, the cement that binds the bricks of the house: forgiveness. Because forgiveness is gift to the highest degree; it is the greatest love of all. It preserves unity despite everything, prevents collapse, and consolidates and strengthens. Forgiveness sets our hearts free and enables us to start afresh. Forgiveness gives hope; without forgiveness, the Church is not built up. The spirit of forgiveness resolves everything in harmony, and leads us to reject every other way: the way of hasty judgement, the cul-de-sac of closing every door, the one-way street criticizing others. Instead, the Spirit bids us take the two-way street of forgiveness received and forgiveness given, of divine mercy that becomes love of neigh-bor, of charity as “the sole criterion by which every-thing must be done or not done, changed or not changed” (ISAAC OF STELLA, Or. 31). Let us ask for the grace to make more beautiful the counte-nance of our Mother the Church, letting ourselves be renewed by forgiveness and self-correction. Only then will we be able to correct others in charity. The Holy Spirit is the fire of love burning in the Church and in our hearts, even though we often cover him with the ash of our sins. Let us ask him: “Spirit of God, Lord, who dwell in my heart and in the heart of the Church, guiding and shaping her in diversity, come! Like water, we need you to live. Come down upon us anew, teach us unity, renew our hearts and teach us to love as you love us, to forgive as you forgive us. Amen”.

Nuestra oración al Espíritu Santo consiste entonces en pedir la gracia de aceptar su unidad, una mirada que abraza y ama, más allá de las prefe-rencias personales, a su Iglesia, nuestra Iglesia; de trabajar por la unidad entre todos, de desterrar las murmuraciones que siembran cizaña y las envidias que envenenan, porque ser hombres y mujeres de la Iglesia significa ser hombres y mujeres de comunión; significa también pedir un corazón que sienta la Iglesia, madre nuestra y casa nuestra: la casa acogedora y abierta, en la que se comparte la alegría multiforme del Espíritu Santo. Y llegamos entonces a la segunda novedad: un corazón nuevo. Jesús Resucitado, en la primera vez que se aparece a los suyos, dice: «Recibid el Espíritu Santo; a quienes les perdonéis los pecados, les quedan perdonados» (Jn 20, 22-23). Jesús no los condena, a pesar de que lo habían abandonado y negado durante la Pasión, sino que les da el Espíritu de perdón. El Espíritu es el primer don del Resucitado y se da en primer lugar para perdonar los pecados. Este es el comienzo de la Iglesia, este es el aglutinante que nos mantiene unidos, el cemento que une los ladrillos de la casa: el perdón. Porque el perdón es el don por excelencia, es el amor más grande, el que mantiene unidos a pesar de todo, que evita el colapso, que refuerza y fortalece. El perdón libera el corazón y le permite recomenzar: el perdón da esperanza, sin perdón no se construye la Iglesia. El Espíritu de perdón, que conduce todo a la armonía, nos empuja a rechazar otras vías: esas precipitadas de quien juzga, las que no tienen salida propia del que cierra todas las puertas, las de sentido único de quien critica a los demás. El Espíritu en cambio nos insta a recorrer la vía de doble sentido del perdón ofrecido y del perdón recibido, de la misericordia divina que se hace amor al prójimo, de la caridad que «ha de ser en todo momento lo que nos induzca a obrar o a dejar de obrar, a cambiar las cosas o a dejarlas como están» (ISAAC DE STELLA, Sermón 31). Pidamos la gracia de que, renovándonos con el perdón y corrigiéndonos, hagamos que el rostro de nuestra Madre la Iglesia sea cada vez más hermoso: sólo entonces podremos corregir a los demás en la caridad. Pidámoslo al Espíritu Santo, fuego de amor que arde en la Iglesia y en nosotros, aunque a menudo lo cubrimos con las cenizas de nuestros pecados: «Ven Espíritu de Dios, Señor que estás en mi corazón y en el corazón de la Iglesia, tú que conduces a la Iglesia, moldeándola en la diversidad. Para vivir, te necesitamos como el agua: desciende una vez más sobre nosotros y enséñanos la unidad, renueva nuestros corazones y enséñanos a amar como tú nos amas, a perdonar como tú nos perdonas. Amén».

REOPENING - REAPERTURA

St. Michael the Archangel’s daily Masses resumed on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 following these guidelines:

1. Daily Mass will be in the main church not in the

chapel.

2. Each person attending Mass is required to wear a

face mask.

3. Front doors are the only entrance. These will be

propped open prior to Mass and after Communion.

4. Seating will only be in nave (center) portion of the

church, keeping social distance of sis feet apart

except those living in the same household.

5. There will be no sign of peace exchanged be-

tween attendees.

6. Communion is only to be received on the hand,

while in line you should maintain two pews distance

with the person in front of you.

Weekend Masses (Saturday and Sunday) remain suspended during this phase. Sunday Masses and other devotions will continue to be livestreamed. In addition to parishes, the Diocese continues to broadcast live Masses and recorded events on the Diocese of Dallas website and local television. During such Masses, there will be an act of spiritual communion. All Catholics of the Diocese of Dallas remain dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass “on Sundays and other holy days of Obligation” (canon 1247). The requirement to receive Communion during the Easter season (canon 920) may be fulfilled at another time during the year.

Las Misas diarias de San Miguel el Arcángel se reinstituyeron a partir del martes, 26 de mayo de 2020 cumpliendo los siguientes lineamientos:

1. La Misa diaria será en la iglesia principal, no en la

capilla.

2. Se requiere que cada persona que asista a misa

use una mascarilla apropiada.

3. Las puertas frontales de la Iglesia son la única entrada. Éstas estarán abiertas antes de la Misa y después de la Comunión.

4. Únicamente las bancas en la parte central de la iglesia, serán usadas manteniendo la distancia social de 6 pies, excepto para aquellos que viven en la misma casa.

5. No habrá intercambio de saludos de paz entre los

asistentes.

6. La Comunión solo deberá recibirse en la mano,

mientras se encuentre en la fila debe mantener dos

bancas de distancia con la persona frente a usted.

During these unprecedented times dealing with COVID-19, the Knights of Columbus are working to make a difference. Our Knights Council #9903 here at St. Michael’s has recently contributed monies raised by various fundraising activities throughout the year to support the broadcasts of Bishop Burns. Every day, Knights are given the opportunity to make a difference. We celebrate each and every Knight for his strength, his compassion and dedica-tion to building a better world.
