HUNGERING FOR

CELEBRATION

We prayed, fasted and gave alms—and now we celebrate! Our Lenten journey ends in our own hearts, where Jesus reigns forever. Let us rejoice in our risen Lord! Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl if you haven’t already!

OUR MISSION IS TO PLACE GOD FIRST IN ALL THINGS, TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, AND TO GROW IN HOLINESS THROUGH PRAYER, SACRAMENTS, AND SERVICE.

March 27, 2016 - Easter Sunday

“He is Risen! He is Risen, Indeed!”

Dear friends, sisters and brothers in Christ,

Warmest and most heart-felt Easter blessings to you and to your loved ones wherever they may be this Easter Sunday morning. My prayer is that each of you will experience the joy and peace of this beautiful feast, this awesome mystery that changed the course of human history for all eternity.

It is the custom in many parts of the world to greet one another during the Octave of Easter – beginning today until next Sunday, Divine Mercy Sunday – with the above words. They acknowledge the central mystery of our faith that Jesus Christ, who was crucified, died and was buried, rose on the third day as he said he would and that he was alive and lives forever. This simple greeting proclaimed that Jesus, the new Passover Lamb, though slain, lives forever, that his blood shed to wash away our sins, promises us eternal life, if we but believe.

Question: Has it ever happened to you that, while watching a movie, you fall asleep? Then, all of a sudden, you wake up, resume watching but really don’t know what’s going on? Somehow you missed some key elements of the plot and you can’t quite seem to pick up the story.

The same is true for the Easter story. Today only makes sense in light of what happened on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil.

On Holy Thursday, the Church celebrates and remembers the Last Supper when Jesus gathered with his Apostles and celebrated the Jewish Passover, the central feast of their faith when they remembered how Yahweh saved them from the slavery of Egypt. It was at the Last Supper that Jesus transformed the Passover into the New Covenant, or eternal promise, by being the new Paschal Lamb. Jesus took bread and wine, blessed them and consecrated them to be his very Body and Blood and told them to do this in memory of him until he comes again. This is the supreme gift of the Holy Eucharist that we celebrate at every Mass, every day, every Sunday.

On Good Friday, the Church remembers the saving passion and death of Jesus. Jesus embraces our suªering as a result of our sin. In so doing, by giving his life in our place, Jesus redeems our meaningless suªering through his self-sacrifice on the cross. He then invites us to be united with him in our suªerings so as to experience what is ultimately God’s desire for us – resurrection and eternal life. We venerate the cross, kissing the very instrument that took his life to give us eternal life. This is the only day of the year that the Church does not celebrate Mass.

Holy Saturday is solemn and empty — a time when Christ lies in the cold, empty tomb, where all seemed lost and dark.

Then, in the darkness of that night and death, we light a huge new fire, light the largest candle we can find, process following the new Light of the World with our candles lit from his, listen to the story of salvation history and the good news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We sing “Alleluia” for the first time since Ash Wednesday when Lent began.

Standing in the Light of Christ, we baptize our Elect who become born again in the new waters of baptism who emerge from the waters as Neophytes, alive anew in Christ Jesus. They are anointed with Chrism and receive the sacrament of Confirmation and are sealed with the Holy Spirit. Then, alive with Christ and filled with the power and joy of the Holy Spirit, they share the Pascal Feast of Heaven on earth, that is, Holy Communion for the first time with the faithful. Divine Mercy SundayOur Lord Jesus said, “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet… Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.”

– Saint Faustina, Diary, 699

Divine Mercy Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of Easter. This year it is April 3. A holy hour will begin at 2:00 pm in the Downtown Church. The chaplet will begin at 3:00 pm followed by benediction. A plenary indulgence is attached to this day. See conditions below.

Dear St. Michael Parishioners,

Please mark your calendars for our Spring Open House and Science Fair on Wednesday, March 30 from 5:30—7 pm. You are invited to stop by St. Michael Parish School to visit our classrooms, meet our teachers and celebrate the achievements of our middle school scientists! Our Science Fair showcases the innovation, inquiry, and creative thinking of our hard working middle school students. Join us to discover their projects, learn more about science, and celebrate their accomplishments!

On Wednesday we will also be conducting school tours, answering your questions, and distributing enrollment informa-tion. Registration is open and now is a perfect time to learn more about your parish school. Need-based tuition assistance is available.

Blessings,

Connor Geraghty Principal

What if it’s all true? The culture constantly attacks the faith and casts doubts. It works to portray Jesus as just a “good” teacher who had some nice things to say about love of neighbor. But what if everything Jesus talked about was true and you really were made for eternal life with him in heaven? How would that change the life you lead and the decisions you make?

Bl. Mother Teresa will canonized as a saint on September 4th!

Spring Work Party

On Saturday April 9th from 9 am - 12 pm, we’re hosting a landscape work party. The goal is to complete some much needed spring cleanup of our downtown flower beds. Last summer’s extended heat caused a significant die-oª of plant materials that we want to replace along with other beautification projects. Please bring rakes, shovels, gloves, and any other tools you may think you will need. We will supply the snacks and drinks. This will be a great way to meet new people and make some new friends!

“It is not easy to entrust oneself to God’s mercy, because it is an abyss

beyond our comprehension. But we must! ... ‘Oh, I am a great sinner!’ All the better! Go to Jesus. He likes you to
