2016 Lenten Regulations The days of both Fast and Abstinence during the season of Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On a day of Fast, only one full meal and two smaller meals (the smaller meals may not exceed the main meal in quantity) are permitted. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. All other Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence 'substantially’ or as a whole is a serious obligation. The Paschal Precept (or Easter duty, the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) is to be completed before the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22nd.

Thank You for our Autumn Healing Mass! We had a very successful Autumn Healing Mass and social thanks to all the volunteers. Everyone thought the Mass was beautiful and the music was joyous. We asked for donations of food items and desserts. Those that heard our call came through. The town came through with the bus and Jack drove the seniors to the affair. We had a very successful day. Keep Saturday, April 9th open to attend our next healing day!

"Mercy: The bridge that connects God and humanity."

- Pope Francis

We open our eyes to the hungry and see the faces of Christ.

If you were seeing this on the parish website you would see the beautiful colors of the stained glass window of the Transfiguration at St. Leon Cathedral in Burbank California. You’d also be hearing today’s prelude:

“Transfiguration." §

While stained glass windows were originally decorative, the church quickly realized they were also an excellent means of conveying gospel stories to the faithful who were mostly illiterate. So, why the image and song

today? A tongue in cheek answer is that very few of us had “read Luke’s account of "The Transfiguration” on this weeks' to-do list. The second, and more important is that pictures and music draw us into and enhance our hearing of the story. Consider previewing today's gospel (page 76.) Join in the singing of, or follow along the words of our prelude (#133.) Picture yourself with Peter, James and John as you are awakened to Jesus standing with two of the greatest prophets of the Hebrew Bible at His side.

Today's offertory song is "Transfigure Us, O Lord" (#502) The lyrics include beautiful images which speak to personal transfiguration (or transformation.) We pray that the Lord "break the chains that bind us," and offer "light for (when we are in) darkness"

******************** In responding to the question "Where do you see Jesus?", Pope Francis replied; "in that child who is hungry, in the one who is sick, in those unjust social structures.” (Pope Francis, Meeting with Students of Jesuit Schools —Q&A, 6/7/13)

Our closing hymn "In These Days Of Lenten Journey" (#130) speaks to the Holy Father's words. Today's verse (written above) will cause me to reexamine my drive through Newark on Route 21 as I come to St. Mary's this week.

Let us be mindful to pray what we sing and put our prayers into actions.

Wishing you a blessed lent, §To view this or previous articles go to www.stmarysnutley.org then click on the banner link to MUSIC (LITURGICAL NOTES).

This Week’s Words of Mercy: A Special Lenten Message from our Holy Father: "The season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated." Pope Francis
