Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 11, 2018

So it’s kind of like time’s up as we conclude the winter Ordinary Time today, because Ash Wednesday

begins this week – February 14th – and the First Sunday of Lent is next week. So, it’s time’s up as we enter into

this sacred season of “repent and believe in the Good News!” And the time’s up is Ordinary as we enter into the

Sacred Lenten Season when we are invited once again to return to the ways of the Lord.

It’s GAME ON!

And before we halt the Ordinary

Time, we hear in the Gospel about a leper

who approached Jesus (that was a no-no

back then) and kneeling before him begged

him “If you wish, you can make me clean.”

And Jesus, moved with pity (as Mark records Jesus’ compassion), stretched out his

hand, touched him (and that too was a no-no), and said, “I do will it. Be made

clean.”

Can you even begin to imagine WHAT was really happening? People were

SHOCKED. How could this man DO WHAT HE DID? And Jesus was reduced to

tears. The disciples were probably standing there with their jaws dropped! The

Temple Leaders were what they were – indignant and outraged and resentful all at

the same time! Clearly Jesus was doing something EXTRAORDINARY!

And isn’t that who and what we are called to be and do? Jesus was more than a

man of his word. He was a man of action! And his gestures of kindness and empathy and care are to be ours as

well. That Simple Plan we had outlined for us a couple of weeks ago is made REAL as we witness Jesus’ word

and action. May it be the same for you and me this week!

HOW then will your LENTEN RESOLUTIONS help you become one who is and does the work of Jesus?

“Don’t be afraid to go to the Sacrament of Confession, where you will meet Jesus who forgives you.”

– Pope Francis

God’s forgiveness, Francis said, is a sign of “His overflowing love for each of us”: that love that gives us

the freedom to stray, like the prodigal son, but that every day awaits our

return with open arms; it is the love of the shepherd who goes in search

of the lost sheep; it is the tenderness with which each sinner is welcomed

when he knocks at His door.

And when we come back to him, he welcomes us like children

into his house, for he never ceases, not for one instant, to wait for us with

love. And his heart rejoices over every child who returns. And this is the

love of God, his joy: forgiveness. He waits for us always!

You are invited to come and encounter Jesus through this Sacra-

ment. Perhaps we can think of someone who is lost, by meeting them

and bringing them to confession. God doesn’t want any of us to feel

lost. He wants us to feel infinitely loved and intimately connected so we may be sent to joyfully proclaim God’s

love and mercy to the world!

THANK YOU for your faithfulness and generosity in the Sunday Collection! Grateful LIVING!

Father John

The 2018 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway

with an in-pew commitment process taking place this

weekend. This is not a special collection; rather, the

Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the change

for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in

installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland

in order to support its mission of a society that stands

united in its support of the “least among us.” Many pa-

rishioners have received a letter from Bishop Perez re-

questing their support. If you have not received this let-

ter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process

today! There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indi-

cated if you have responded by mail.

“Thoughtfulness, the beginning of

holiness”

Thoughtfulness, the kindly regard for others,

is the beginning of holiness. If you learn the

art of being thoughtful, you will be more

and more like Christ; His heart was kind

and gentle and He always thought of oth-

ers. Our vocation, to be beautiful, must be

full of regard for others. Jesus did good wherever He went.

Our Lady at Cana thought only of the needs of others and told

Jesus about them.

Family Perspective

Who are the outcasts in our families? Is it not time to

pray, fast and ask for understanding, healing and rec-

onciliation among long-time estranged family mem-

bers? Be the one who asks Jesus for healing.

Bible Study & Faith Sharing

Bible Study will meet on Tuesday from 11:00am - 12:00Noon

in the chapel to continue our study of Ecclesiastes. We will

stay with Ecclesiastes until Ash Wednesday when we will

begin using a Lenten reflection book. If you would like to join

us for the six weeks of Lent, we do have a limited number of

extra books available. Please call Barbara through the parish

office and leave a message on her voice mail. Bring your Bi-

ble and join us to see if the Lord might have a message for

you.

Quiet Prayer

Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:20pm in the chapel

for Lectio Divina. This will be followed by 20 minutes of con-

templative prayer. Either of might be a good spiritual practice

to deepen you Lenten experience.

12 Step Spirituality

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

NEW CHANT FOR LENT

Here we are, at the last Sunday of Ordinary Time before Lent begins! I am very excited to tell you that spiritually, commun-

ally, and especially musically, this Lenten and Easter season are going to be very invigorating! There are so many good

things in the works that I couldn’t fit it all in this little box. There will be a Taize service, which I am especially excited

about, and new interesting music to listen to by our choirs. I can’t wait!

As a notice for all, we will be using a different mass setting for our Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, and Lamb of

God during the Lenten season. By a very prolific living composer that I had the pleasure of working with when I was still in

college, Lori True’s Mass of Mercy is a beautiful, humble arrangement of the well known tune PICARDY. This tune is

commonly sung with the text, “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.” Similar to the chant mass that we have sung in years

past, it is a simple, meditative arrangement that still echoes in our hearts about the self reflection and sacrifice that we do in

reflection of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. This mass setting will begin on Ash Wednesday. Be ready!

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses

on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument dur-

ing mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is 440.243.3877

ext 27.

Communion Distribution:

During the winter months of January, February and March, Communion will be distributed under one spe-

cies, that of the Body of Christ. We will suspend the distribution of the Blood of Christ as a precaution dur-

ing the flu season. Thank you for your understanding.

The gifts of Bread and Wine offered at Sunday Mass become the very Body and Blood of Christ. It is a joy

to present these gifts to the Priest as a sign and symbol of the gifts the community offers – that of their

mind, heart and spirit.

We would like to ENCOURAGE the FAMILY of those for whom the Mass is being offered to PRESENT the

gifts, after the collection has been taken up.

PLEASE, make yourself KNOWN to the Usher well before Mass begins, so that due honor of your loved

ones can be made. THANK YOU.
