Mission Statement
St. Mary is a faith community which worships together, follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives,
evangelizes others by our lives and actions, gives generously of our time and resources in service to others, shows
compassion and love towards one another, provides religious education and works for social justice for all.
Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 5, 2017
The book of Malachi (the name means “my messenger”) that
we hear from today, was probably written during the 5th century B.C.E.
(Before the Common Era) and after the Israelites had returned from
exile to Jerusalem. Despite God’s love for Israel, the people had re-
sponded poorly, failing to tithe, and offering defiled food for their sacri-
fice, the blame for which was placed on the priests who “have turned
aside from the way and have caused many to falter,” by their poor in-
struction.
Paul in today’s reading from I Thessalonians, continues his description
of his relationship with them, reminding them that he and his coworkers
were not only sharing the gospel with them, but their very selves.
And in the Gospel of Matthew today, Jesus returns to the theme of ap-
propriate behavior for religious leaders. The scribes and the Pharisees
“have taken their seat on the chair of Moses,” so disciples are to do and
observe that they are told but not to follow their example! That’s pos-
sibly where the phrase, “practice what you preach” comes from and
how the scribes and Pharisees are NOT a great example of this principle. It wasn’t their teaching Jesus was con-
demning, but their behavior.
This last of the Five Discourses of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel challenges OUR BEHAVIOR as we move
toward judgment, HOW will we BE and LIVE as the presence of Jesus in our world? WHAT changes are we
encouraged to make? WILL we BE as Christ in the world?
Generations of faith-filled Catholic people have passed on to us
the most precious gift that we possess—the gift of faith. As this genera-
tion’s “good stewards,” we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to
our children.
Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents.
Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their
churches and community groups and bringing their children along with
them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their “treasure”—their allowance
or other earnings—with special children’s offering envelopes. As we know from our own experience, it takes a
lifetime to develop the habits of good stewardship.
God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life built around gratitude to
God, lived out by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us. There is no more precious
inheritance we can pass on to our children than this lifestyle of gratitude.
“If you will give these instructions . . ., you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the
words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed.” (1 Timothy 4:6)
PLANNING AHEAD for JANUARY: We are currently in DIALOGUE about the possibility of
designing and publishing a NEW Church Directory! It would include the photographs of all our
parishioners and families. We’re thinking about rolling it out sometime in January! What a
benefit to ALL if EVERYONE responds to the invitation to have their picture taken! We haven’t
had an updated Parish Directory in a VERY LONG TIME!
KEEP COLLECTING you Non-Perishable Food Items to FILL THE BASKETS on Thanksgiving Day! Bring all your
items with you to Mass at 9:30am! Happy Day!
THANKS for your financial commitment to the Parish this past weekend. Blessings and peace to all.

We will set up a time and day for the Ex-traordinary Minister to visit that best fits your schedule. Family Perspective
It is wrong when adults put on a front for show like in to-
day’s Gospel. In our families we must love, affirm and appre-
ciate others for who they are and not for who we want them
to be. Humility and loving attention are the keys.
In Your Charity
In your charity, please remember the
repose of the soul of Mr. Hutchinson.
May he rest in eternal peace.
Grateful Giving Update
Our Grateful Giving Program is being very well received
by the people of St. Mary Parish. To date, 350 households
have increased their weekly contribution in response to our
Grateful Giving Program, representing a combined weekly
increase of $2,626.00. Also, as part of Grateful Giving
Program, 20 New Families are registering with the Parish.
Please use the special Grateful Giving envelope to indicate
your new level of giving, and then return to your regular
envelope packet for succeeding weeks.

“Give me a free hand”
One day Saint Margaret Mary asked
Jesus: “Lord, what will Thou have me
do?” “Give Me a free hand”, Jesus an-
swered. Let Him empty and transform you
and afterwards fill the chalice of your hearts to the brim, that
you in turn, may give of your abundance. Seek Him.
Knowledge will make you strong as death. Love Him trust-
fully without looking back, without fear. Believe that Jesus
and Jesus alone is life. Serve Jesus, casting aside and forget-
ting all that troubles or worries you; make loved the love
that is not loved.

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy
A MEMORIAL MONTH
The weather is finally catching up to the season! Trees are
quickly changing colors, wind is kicking up leaves all over the
place, and I’m pretty sure that it hailed for a little bit last Sun-
day! I’ve just started to have to use heat during my morning
commute! In any case, we’ve made it to November just in time
to settle into fall festivities, inside and outside of the Church!
Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, but make sure
that you don’t forget that November is the month of the dead!
We had an All Saints and All Souls day mass at the beginning,
but the rest of the month is time for you to do your own per-
sonal memorials of those that you have loved. Will you visit the
grave of a past friend? Will you have a little get together with
your family to talk about all of the good times? There’s so
many different ways to give your loved one some respectful
attention during this special month.
On that note of those who have passed, have you thought about
what will happen when you are no longer on Earth? Who will
plan your funeral? Have you thought of any special music or
readings you would like said, or have a family member be apart
of the service? I am always happy to help anyone pre-plan a
funeral so that you can get exactly what you want while taking
that burden off of family members that may be grieving. Feel
free to contact me if you would like to set up an appointment!
Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse
on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on
Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any
of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during
mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the
loft. The Music Ministry office number is 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Bible Study & Faith Sharing
With the death of Solomon and the division of the king-
dom, God’s people continue to gradually fall from their
faith in Him. Come and see if your story can connect to
the scriptures. Bring your Bible and join us to see if the
Lord might have a message for you.
Quiet Prayer
Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the
chapel. This week we join in simple Quiet prayer. To-
gether we find our hearts drawn more deeply into our rela-
tionship with Him. Why not give yourself the opportunity
to try this method of prayer.

Join us after each Mass on Sunday, November 12th to enjoy
a delicious breakfast and learn about the process Catholic
men and women follow when they discern religious and lay
vocations. Did you know there are seven (yes, seven!) semi-
narians currently studying for the priesthood from our two
parishes of St. Mary in Berea and at St. Mary of the Falls?
The Knights of Columbus joyously provides tuition support
to those seminarians and the funds we raise help make that
happen.
The Vocations Information Fair will take place right along-
side our Pancake Breakfast. It will feature representatives
who will share insights on how to make sense of the various
calls we all receive as Catholics — not just to ordinations
and religious life, but also to family formation and the fully
engaged laity. God’s plan is a good plan — each of us has a
role.
