Trust in God

Dear Community,

It is Winter, of that there is no doubt this year. It’s cold, wet and windy. It is easy to complain, as we long for spring and summer days again. Yet here in Melbourne we are really blest with weather that is not too extreme. Out temperature rarely drops below zero and rarely gets too hot. And we are fortunate that we mainly avoid humid weather.

Winter is a time to reflect. I invite you to read and reflect upon this poem which I came across in The Shamrock (which is a magazine I receive from the Oceania Province of Christian Brothers). Well worth a read!

“Listening to Winter.”

Remember next week Monday 3 August 2015, our school is closed to all students. The teachers are undertaking a Professional Development Day in School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. This is the program which we have been implementing over the past 6 terms. We are ready now to move into the next phase, hence the need for more teacher development.

This program is a having a major impact in our school in supporting the children in choosing more appropriate behaviours. The next phase looks at Major and Minor Behaviours and appropriate school wide consequences.

My concern is for ongoing school improvement and I most confident that we are on track to ensure all members of the community are safe and learning. Remember next week Monday 3 August 2015, our school is closed to all students.

KEILOR DIVISION SPORTS FINALS RESULTS

Girls Soccer:

On Friday the Girls’ Soccer team participated in the Keilor Division Finals. The Keilor Division is where the top teams from each district in the Keilor area play against each other in a tournament format, to decide which team goes to the next round. Our girls’ team played two games in a row and played as best as they possibly could! In the first match against St Albans Primary the scores were 4-0, with two goals from Georgia Hill and two goals from Tayla Axiak. In the second match we played Kororoit Creek Primary and the scores were 2-1. This game was really challenging but we managed to come out with a win, again Tayla and Georgia scored our two goals, however although those two girls scored those amazing goals, all the girls put in an outstanding effort. At the end of the game we all celebrated and went to cheer on the boys in there last two games. We all can’t wait for the next round, Regionals. Thanks to Miss Sheldon for filling in as coach!

Boys Soccer:

On the 24th of July the Soccer Boys played against the top schools from the Keilor Division. We all gave it our best and it seemed to have paid off as we now move on to the next round and won a trophy shield for the first time! Our first match was a 6-0 win against St Abans Meadows, our second match we came from behind to win 2-1 in a really hard fought match against Sunshine Harvester PS. Some great kicking from Jordy and Rhys combined with rock solid defence from Alex and Martin to achieve the win. The third match we won 2-1 against Kororoit Creek PS in a struggle as we were so tired! But some amazing running from Sabit and Justin really got us over the line! After the first goal of the first match it gave the team a lot of confidence and it lifted the team up. The second team were very hard and they scored first. The boys ended up winning the match and having a great time! The girls T-ball and soccer teams supported us throughout the second and third match which gave us great team spirit. We knew it wasn’t over because we had to win the last match! The last match was hard to win but the boys pulled through and won 2-1 to send us through to the next round… Thanks to Mr Maxwell for coaching and supporting us this season! The next round will be hard so wish us luck!

Girls Tee Ball

On Friday the 24th

of July the St. Mary Mackillop Girls T-ball team competed in the Keilor Division final against St. Albans Meadows Primary school. Throughout the game we scored five runs and they scored 14 runs. Our team was lead up to this level by co-operating together as a great team and winning in our Sydenham District competition. Unfortunately we didn’t win the Keilor Division match but we kept our heads high and acknowledged our efforts to even make it this far, this is the first time that any of St. Mary Mackillop’s T-ball teams have participated in this tournament. Hopefully next year the T-ball teams will win and get as far as we did or further. We would also like to thank Mrs Hirschauer for being our amazing coach and helping us to achieve our goals. By Maria, Lereece and Jennifer

A BIG THANKYOU

The Prep planting boxes have been transformed from an overgrown mini-jungle to a haven of beautifully coloured and scented plants, just waiting for Spring to help them on their way. This is thanks to David Copeland, grandpa of Matilda in Prep Yellow. In just two days David worked his ‘green finger magic’ on the four planter boxes, keenly watched by some of the Prep students during their playtime. We are extremely grateful to David for his time and experience and look forward to watching as the plants bloom over the coming months. Thank you David.

BOOK WEEK PARADE

Book Week celebrates Australian writing and illustrations of children’s books. The theme is “Books light up our World” which highlights the importance of how books develop our thoughts and imagination and shed light into dark places. At St Mary MacKillop we continue to encourage and foster the love of reading, as books help us to grow as human beings. To celebrate this occasion we will be having a Book Character Parade on Monday 24

th August, in the hall at

9.10am. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Each grade will have an opportunity to parade their costume in front of the school community. We hope you can join us on this special day!
