Dear People of St. Luke,
Last Sunday I shared with you an article entitled:
“Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Hearts” which gave suggestions for making sure
all can gather with us; be welcome and serve as they are called and gifted. The following article repeats some of last Sunday’s
information but the introduction is particularly appropriate for us in a parish setting.
Have you ever felt nervous about or avoided speaking to someone in a wheelchair—anyone who is physically or
mentally challenged? This is not that unusual while interacting with people who have disabilities or different degrees of
ability, but it is important that we overcome this uneasiness in order to practice the kind of hospitality that our sharing in
Eucharist requires. Here are ten tips for welcoming and interacting with people with disabilities, culled from their own
experiences. As Christ’s Church, we promise to be hospitable and practice here Christ’s simple ways of welcome and
inclusion. We do not mean to patronize but welcome all people equally. Here are ten tips for welcoming and interacting with
people with disabilities, culled from their own experiences.
Ten Commandments for Welcoming People with Disabilities to This Church.
1. Treat the person with a disability as you would anyone else. Relax when communicating. Rely on
natural courtesy, consideration and common sense. Repeat yourself is you sense misunderstanding, or ask the
person to repeat him or herself if you do not comprehend.
2. Address the individual, not an assistant, interpreter, or family member.
3. Treat adults with disabilities as adults, rather than as children, regardless of the disability.
4. Speak at a normal rate, without exaggeration or over-emphasis.
5. Do not be afraid to ask questions about the person’s disability.
6. To facilitate communication, have pads of paper and pencils available in all meeting rooms and other
gathering places on parish property. Use them when helpful.
7. Allow people to do things for themselves when they want to, even if it takes longer or results in
mistakes. Do not always “do for” the person.
8. Offer assistance, but do not impose if help is not desired.
9. During all gatherings or meetings, allow time to attend to personal needs and rest. Please be patient.
10. Respect the individual’s personal space and auxiliary aids.
Do not: - lean against or push a wheelchair; - pet a service animal in harness;
- grab an arm or hand when attempting to guide; - move wheelchairs, crutches, white canes,

In light of the ongoing immigration crisis, namely the separating of children from their parents at the border, I offer the
following from the most recent Bishop’s Meeting: US. Bishops Decry the Administration’s Asylum Decision
The U.S. bishops June 13 decried U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision that asylum seekers fleeing domestic
or gang violence cannot find protection in the United States. "At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the right to life,"
the bishops' statement said. They urged the nation's policymakers and courts "to respect and enhance, not erode, the potential
of our asylum system to preserve and protect the right to life." Sessions' decision "elicits deep concern because it potentially
strips asylum from many women who lack adequate protection," it said. "These vulnerable women will now face return to
extreme dangers of domestic violence in their home country."
The statement from the bishops came on the first day of their June 13-14 spring assembly in Fort Lauderdale. Cardinal
Daniel N. DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, read the statement and the bishops voiced their
support. Announced by Sessions at a June 11 news conference, the decision "negates decades of precedents that have provided
protection to women fleeting domestic violence," it said. "Unless overturned, the decision will erode the capacity of asylum to
save lives, particularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are persecuted by private actors." The attorney general
reversed an immigration court's decision granting asylum to a Salvadoran woman who said she had been abused by her
husband. Sessions said U.S. asylum laws cannot be used to remedy "all misfortune," including violence someone suffers in
another country or other reasons related to an individual's "social, economic, family or other personal circumstances."
Bishop Joe S. Vasquez of Texas, chair of the USCCB's Committee on Migration, "condemned the continued use of
family separation at the U.S./Mexican border as an implementation of the administration's zero tolerance policy." "Our
government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to
irreparable harm and trauma.” "Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together.
"While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to
ensure that safety. Separating babies (children) from their mothers (parents) is not the answer and is immoral."

Notes Regarding the Current Budget & Financial State of the Parish The 2018-19, St. Luke Parish Budget, printed below, was prepared by our Bookkeeper, Terry Rice; Pastor, Fr. Augustine and the Finance Council with input from the Staff and Committees. The Finance Council approved it and it was then presented to the Pastoral Council at the April and May meetings for review and discussion. The financial state of St. Luke Parish is stable. Nevertheless, there are certain areas for concern. First, it should be noted that the numbers below are comparing the approved budgeted numbers for the current fiscal year and next fiscal year. Secondly, each year we fall short in terms of budgeted Stewardship revenue. Our goal for 2018-19 is to increase our weekly offering and raise enough revenue in Stewardship monies so all rental and fundraising monies can go to Capital Improvements, e.g. the resurfacing of our parking lots. We are fortunate that 2017-2018 should end with a slight surplus with expenses less than budget. We want to continue to save for long-term goals and continue to do some Gospel dreaming and ministry visioning. To be fiscally responsible we must continue to operate as a parish through the generous financial stewardship of our membership and we will. Thanks to all for the generous commitment to stewardship of time, talent and financial treasure and thanks to our parish staff who are very budget conscious as they minister to and with us. This might be the time to consider an increased commitment to stewardship of time, talent and financial treasure.
