MONDAY:

8:00 AM – 3:00 PM TUESDAY: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

WEDNESDAY: 8:00 AM – 2:00PM THURSDAY: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

FRIDAY: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM SATURDAY AND SUNDAY CLOSE

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10 This reading is a vigorous exhortation from the prophet Isaiah to lead lives of active charity and generosity. He promises that the Lord will be our “dawn, “our “rear guard,” our “light” if we share our bread, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul tells the Corinthians that he and they must not rely on the so-called “wisdom” of secular teaching and philosophy but on the power of the Spirit. Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus reminds the disciples and all Christians that they carry special responsibilities to be “the salt of the earth.” They must not hide their light but show their goodness to all.

FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON SUNDAY READINGS

“Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own… you are the salt of the earth… you are the light of the world.” It is hard for us to escape the direct teaching of Jesus and the prophet Isaiah. A familiar biblical question ‘what are

we to do?’ finds a ready answer in these two scripture sources. What Christian cannot be moved when we see images of the millions of refugees fleeing the wars in Iraq and Syria, drowning in the Mediterranean. How few Christians respond with compassion and empathy, afraid to take the risk to care for suffering humanity. Do I forget that they too are made in the image and likeness of God? Even if some have less than noble intentions, do we let all suffer? How is it I live as salt of the earth? How can I be light of the world? Agencies do incredible work aiding those in need. Our church is at the forefront. Consider Jesuit Refugee Services, Catholic Relief Services, Doctors Without Borders, CNEWA and Aid to the Church in Need and countless others responding generously. Why do I sit back as others need the salt and light that we are? More than the financial aid you might give is the attitude of grave concern in these moments of crisis. (His Word Today Rev. William Reilly)

Welcome! New parishioners are asked to register by calling or visiting the parish office or by speaking to one of the parish staff. WHY A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER The precepts of the Church explained that: we need to belong to a parish (your parish is the Church in the City where you are domiciled) and to contribute to its support. Everyone should do this (Canon 107). To identify yourself with a worshipping community of faith. Salvation comes to us by God in community. Religion is not meant to be individualistic. Membership in a parish community is the norm. To allow the priest of the parish to know you so that Letters of Recommendation can be given when needed. (Sponsorship/certificates)

"The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. …To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love … When you look at the Crucifix, you

understand how much Jesus loved you then, when you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now." Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Abortion Survivors Child psychiatrist Philip Ney relates, "A woman reported telling her nine year old son

about her abortion, which had taken place years before he was born. He said, 'I knew, Mom, that there was something wrong. I always have nightmares about knives and my mother killing me. I have an imaginary brother who wants to kill me. If you had not aborted the other, would you have aborted me?'" (Abortion Survivors, p.36). This is a story repeated more times than most people realize, and representing a societal and pastoral problem whose proportions are greater today than at any previous time in history: the phenomenon of tens of millions of abortion survivors. It is clear that abortion's primary victim is the child who is killed. It has also become increasingly clear that to kill the child is to harm the mother and father as well. What is not always so well known, however, is that abortion makes its impact felt on those who have had a sibling aborted, and that this impact is felt in surprising and astonishing ways, which also have wider implications for the whole of society.

Month 6 I’M SITTING UP STRAIGHT NOW! The baby’s oil and sweat glands are

functioning. Theses help regulate body temperature. A white filmy layer covers the baby and protects her delicate skin from the surrounding amniotic fluid and from scratches as she twists and turns. This waxy substance will be quickly absorbed in to her skin soon after she is born. She can now respond to sound. Her lungs are fairly well developed and she would stand a good chance of survival if born at this time. For info call Kathy Friel 973-398-8728

Last week, Deacon Tom and 8 members of St. Jude’s, joined St. Michael’s in Netcong to the Right to Life March in Washington, D.C. Those who went walked to the Senate office of Chris Smith. Thank you for all of your prayers and may God bless you.

Saints of the Week . February 6; St. Paul Miki & Companions, Martyrs Paul was the son of a Japanese military leader. He was born at Tounucumada, Japan, was educated at the Jesuit college of Anziquiama, joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. He was crucified on February 5 with twenty-five other Catholics during the persecution of Christians under the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruler of Japan in the name of the emperor. February 10: St. Scholastica, Virgin Scholastica is the foundress of the women's branch of Benedictine Monasticism. Scholastica is the patron saint of nuns, and convulsive children, and is invoked against storms and rain. Her memorial is 10 February. She sacrificed many opportunities for her and her brother, just so they could get closer to God.

February 11:Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in honor of the Marian apparitions that reportedly occurred in 1858 in the vicinity of Lourdes in France. The first of these is the apparition of 11 February 1858, when 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous told her mother that a "lady" spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle (a mile from the town) while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend.[1] Similar apparitions of the alleged "Lady" were reported on seventeen occasions that year, until the climax revelation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception took place.]

A Prayer for Peace

Almighty God, in whose hands lies the destiny of men and nations, Let not the hopes of men perish, nor the sacrifices of men be in vain. O holy and life-giving Spirit, enable us by thy grace to root out from our common life the bitterness of ancient wrongs and the thirst to avenge the betrayals of long ago. Save us from the tyranny of history and set us free in a new obedience to serve each other in the present hour. Accepting the redemption wrought for us, we believe that all our sins of yesterday are covered by thy mercy; Grant us therefore grace and courage to give and to receive the forgiveness which alone can heal today's wounds. Draw us, O Lord, towards loving kindness and guide us into the way of peace.
