TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK One reason the government has so many big buildings in Washington is to provide space for what our regulators do best: regulate. For example, a whole range of products list

ingredients of their contents or alert us about the harm that can come from misusing them. And so, plastic bags caution us against cutting off our breathing. My own personal favorite, which I saw pasted on a dumpster in a restaurant in Gettysburg, was a warning not to crawl inside of it—not to worry! I’m really just guessing, but I suspect that the name of the chain restaurant “Friday’s” derives from the expression “Thank God, it’s Friday,” which rejoices that the work week is over. Its acronym is “TGIF,” which could also serve as something to be inprinted on the inside of shoes to instruct us, as the old joke puts it, that “Toes go in first.” Some people are workaholics. They make work their top priority and spend a great amount of their time on it, even too much. James Colaianni, Jr., in a collection of short anecdotes he edited, recalled that he knew a workaholic business executive who had a framed sign over his desk that read, “Thank God it’s Monday.” Most people, but not all, are not troubled by such dedication, although Frederick Law Olmsted was an exception to this general rule. Olmsted was the genius who designed New York City’s Central Park. He also created the plans for many more places of public enjoyment, including George Vanderbilt’s extravagantly beautiful Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina and Branch Brook Park in Newark and Belleville, which has more cherry trees than Washington. During the Civil War, Olmsted also directed the U. S. Sanitary Commission, which eventually grew into the Red Cross. George Templeton Stong, a prominent New York banker who was a member of the Commission’s executive committee, once described Olmsted’s work habits:

He works like a dog all day and sits up near all night, doesn’t go home to his family for five days and nights together, works with steady feverish intensity till four in the morning, sleeps on a sofa in his clothes and breakfasts on strong coffee and pickles!

No wonder he’s dead. The Classical and Christian traditions were not wrong when they urged us to value moderation. (continued above)

I don’t know if Olmsted took Labor Day off, and I have no intention of searching for the answer by reading his biography, which, I’m sure, is of interest to those who appreciate great landscape architecture. It’s possible that he did ease off a bit on the holiday, since it was invented in 1882, twenty-one years before he died, as a homage to American workers, and a respite for them, thanks to the efforts of our nation’s labor unions. I’m sure most of you work very hard, or did so before you retired. May you thoroughly enjoy the Labor Day holiday. My father typically worked sixteen-hour days seven days a week to pay the rent and keep Rice Krispies on our table. Part of the value of our work is the way it supports those we love and care for. St. Ephrem the Syrian (c. 306-c. 373) wrote verses on working that are a fine match for the holiday:

The ordinary workmen will Come to the son of Joseph singing: … Our whole craft praises you, who are our eternal glory. Make for us a yoke that is light, even easy for us to bear. Establish that measure in us in which there can be no falseness.

THE MASS—starting 9/18 View any or all of six beautiful and engaging episodes on the Mass on six Wednesday mornings—September 18, 25; October 2, 9, 16, 23— from 9:30-10:30 am— in the Jackson Room of Saint Joseph’s Lower Church THERE IS NO COST.

Bishop Robert Barron is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He is also the host of CATHOLICISM, a groundbreaking, award-winning documentary about the Catholic Faith, which aired on PBS.

Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately jointed with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. Join us—starting Wednesday, September 18 at 9:30 am and learn how to fully participate in the source and summit of the Christian life.
