16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 18, 2021

Pastor’s Ponderings…

Dear Saint Joseph and All Saints Parishioners:

Where y’at? Saint Ignatius of Loyola

described our prayer lives as sometimes

fluctuating between periods of spiritual

consolation and spiritual desolation.

Consolation is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who gives

“courage and strength, consolation, tears,

inspiration, and peace. This he does by making all

easy, by removing all obstacles so that the soul

goes forward in doing good.” (Spiritual Exercises #

315). Desolation is the opposite. It is caused by the

evil spirit who is apt to “harass with anxiety, to

afflict with sadness, to raise obstacles backed by

fallacious reasonings that disturb the soul. Thus,

he seeks to prevent the soul from advancing

[in prayer].” (#315)

Note that these experiences are caused by

outside forces greater than I am. And, note that

most saints experienced BOTH consolation AND

desolation. Even Jesus experienced desolation!

Most powerfully, we see this in the agony of the

garden: “He was in such agony, and he prayed so

fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood

falling on the ground.” (Luke 22:44).

If you find yourself in times of spiritual

desolation, Ignatius calls us to “intensify our

activity against desolation. We can insist more

upon prayer, upon meditation and on much

examination of ourselves.” (#319). So double

down. Talk to a trusted friend or spiritual

director. Do not make any big life decisions

because you are not in a good frame of mind.

Crank up your prayer a bit. Fight back. Resist.

And “consider, too, that consolation will soon

return.”(#321). So…where y’at?

Peace,

Father Ryan

Church Hours

Our Church is open daily from 7:00AM until 12:00NN

Sunday mornings from 7:00AM-12:00NN.

On Wednesdays we will hold Eucharistic Adoration

from 12:00NN - 6:00PM.

Volunteers Desperately Needed!!!

In order to reopen our bingo in the Fall, we need

volunteers to work selling materials before and

during the bingo, calling numbers, and checking

cards. Likewise, we are most grateful to

Lise Begin for heading up our bingo for the past

8 years. Lise has asked to step down from her

position so that she and her husband can do some

more traveling. So, we are looking for someone

with banking/accounting experience who would

be willing to do the accounting portion of the

bingo and file earnings reports with the State

Police. The bingo is the biggest fundraiser in our

parish which annually earns about $20,000 in

profit, most of which funds the Religious

Education Program for our children and

teenagers. If we are unable to secure the

volunteers to properly run the bingo, the bingo

will not reopen. If you are interested, please see

Father Ryan.

Permanent Diaconate Program

Bishop Tobin has authorized the recruitment and

formation of a new class of Permanent Deacons for

the Diocese of Providence. Deacons are men who love

God and His Church and feel called to serve in a more

committed way. The role of the deacon is to assist the

bishops and priests and to proclaim by his life the

Church’s call to serve the needs of others. The

formation process is a four year program of academic

instruction, spiritual development, human

development and practical pastoral experience. Upon

completion, each man is prepared for ordination and

assignment to serve as a deacon in parishes and

other ministerial situations: proclaiming the Gospel,

assisting in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and

other rites of the Church and serving in ministries of

charity and catechetics.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH JULY 18, 2021

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:

I, myself will gather the remnant of my flock

from all the lands to which I have driven them

and bring them back to their meadow; there they

shall increase and multiply. (Jer 23:3)

Psalm:

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall

want. (Ps 23)

Second Reading:

In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have

become near by the blood of Christ. (Eph 2:13)

Gospel:

When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,

his heart was moved with pity for them, for they

were like sheep without a shepherd; and he

began to teach them many things. (Mk 6:34)

REFLECT

First Reading:

The Prophet Jeremiah spoke of God’s negative

reaction to “the shepherds” (false rulers) who

neglected and mislead his “sheep” (the people of

Israel and Judah). What characteristics make

for an ideal leader?

Second Reading:

Paul taught the Ephesians that through his

cross and resurrection, Jesus established unity

and peace for all believers. When have you

experienced harmony in your faith community?

Gospel:

Jesus encouraged the apostles to retreat and

rest after their successful missionary work, but

the crowds made that difficult. What gets in

your way from resting and retreating?

Installation Mass

& Coffee An’

August 8th

of Columbus Council 113

invite all of the Parishioners

to come down and enjoy Coffee An’ after the

11:00 a.m. mass and enjoy some pastry and

snacks and conversation.

A Midsummer’s Update

While most parishes tend to “wind down”

in the summer time, our campus has been

bustling with activity and I just wanted to give

you a quick update of what we have been doing.

In the church, we have re-finished the floors

in the sacristy and under the center sections

of pews. The outer sections were outside of

our budget so we will work on those next

year. Thank you to Dennis Gilbert, our

maintenance director, and Tavares Cleaning

Company for making quick work of it, and

my apologies for any inconvenience it may

have caused for those coming to Eucharistic

Adoration.

At the request of the Finance Council, we are

looking into installing a sprinkler system in

front of the church to keep the grass looking

nice.

Dennis Gilbert and Tom Burke will soon be

cutting down the hedges in front of the

church which have grown so large that you

can no longer see the church’s sign!

Speaking of the sign, because of an incredibly

generous donation from one family who

wishes to remain anonymous, we now have

about $13,000 to replace the sign. Thank you

to Federal Hill Sign Company in Providence

for helping us design the new sign.

We’re continuing to replace the aging

windows in Good Shepherd School. This

summer we replaced the gym windows on

the courtyard side, the kitchen windows, and

the bingo office and bathroom windows.

Next year we will replace the gym windows

that face the rectory and then the project will

be complete! I cannot thank enough one

extremely generous family in our parish

without whose help this would not have been

possible.

Many of the parts for our new sound system

have been backordered so we are still

awaiting an installation date from ATR

Treehouse.

I’ll continue to keep you updated as time goes

on. -Father Ryan
