The Catholic Family of the Five Towns: The Future of Our Three Parishes

History: In June of 2011, Bishop Murphy appointed Fr. Tom Moriarty the Pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Inwood, in addition to already being Pastor of Saint Joseph’s Church in Hewlett. The goal was to begin to share responsibilities between parishes and determine the best ways to serve the Catholic population of the Five Towns with limited resources.

At the same time, Fr. Fasano returned from Canon Law studies in Rome and was asked to live at Our Lady of Good Counsel and assist while beginning his fulltime responsibilities as a Can-on Lawyer on the Diocesan Tribunal (Court). Fr. Fernando Ech-everri, who serves Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream was also asked to serve the needs of the people of Our Lady of Good Counsel, especially our Spanish speaking parishioners.

After many years of dedicated service as Pastor of Saint Joa-chim’s Church in Cedarhurst, Msgr. Paul Rahilly will retire as of October 1, 2015. At that time, Fr. Tom will become the Pas-tor of all three parishes in the Five Towns. Bishop Murphy has also assigned Fr. James Drew to assist in the three parishes. We welcome him warmly.

Approximately 30 years ago, there were between 12 and 15 priests serving the Five Towns. There is now one fulltime pas-tor, one fulltime assistant, one resident priest with another fulltime job and one part-time priest for Hispanic Ministry. Times have changed, neighborhoods have changed, and the number of available priests has clearly changed.

Goals: In the spring of 2015, the Diocese asked Fr. Tom, Fr. Fasano and Msgr. Rahilly to propose a strategy for the care of the Five Towns. Our first goal was to determine if it would be possible to keep Saint Joachim’s Church open. After a consid-erable amount of time and effort, we developed a plan that would allow ALL THREE PARISHES TO REMAIN OPEN.

As you can imagine, this will require a great deal of coopera-tion, understanding and patience on everyone’s part. Even though Saint Joachim’s is the smallest of the three parishes, we believe that it is important to maintain a Catholic presence in Cedarhurst and serve the faithful parishioners who still reside there.

Obviously, adjustments to schedules as well as attitudes must be made. We need to develop a better sense that there is one Cath-olic Family in the Five Towns with three Churches working together. Each priest serving in the Five Towns is covering multiple parishes, administrative and diocesan responsibilities.

Rumors and negativity are poisonous. Gossip is a sin against God and our neighbor. Don’t give in to either. If you have questions, please feel free to speak with Fr. Tom or Fr. Fasano. Let us do our best to encourage and support each other, our priests and deacons, and our Churches as we work together in service to Jesus Christ and his Gospel.

Weekend Mass Schedule - (beginning October 1, 2015)

The Diocese required that the proposed plan include a weekend Mass Schedule that could be covered by 2 priests in the event of illness or emergencies. The following schedule makes that pos-sible. It is designed to offer the widest possible range of Mass times. Please understand that we had to consider the parish pop-ulations, attendance at each Mass, parking availability and Church space.

Considerations:

Why do we have to make these changes? The total Mass sched-ule for all 3 churches must be able to be covered by 2 priests in case of illness or emergencies.

Our Lady of Good Counsel has an elevator for easy access for older parishioners. A 4:00 pm Saturday evening Mass will make it easier for them, especially during winter months.

The Spanish speaking population at Our Lady of Good Counsel has grown. This schedule will allow Spanish Masses to be added if needed, especially during holidays.

All other priests who occasionally assist us have fulltime assign-ments elsewhere (i.e. hospital chaplains). They are kind enough to offer us assistance when they can, but their availability is very limited and can end at any moment.

The three churches of the Five Towns are each less than two miles apart. We travel further than that for shopping or sports activities. Please remember that your priests and deacons will be covering multiple Masses in multiple locations each week.

“But, I want MY Mass at MY time in MY Church!” That way of thinking is no longer possible. We will now have a choice of 9 different Mass times. That is more than most parishes twice our total (combined) size.

As Christians, we must work together to build up the Body of Christ on earth. That means praying for more priestly vocations, making sacrifices, and loving one another as he loves us.

In our continued mission toward unity as the Parishes of the Five Towns, Three Parishes, ONE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY, we will

now share one weekly bulletin. This is anoth-er step taken to meet Bishop Murphy’s man-date to develop a unified Catholic Identity in

the Five Towns. An identity shared by all three parishes, and the common leadership of

priests, deacons, and staffs now serving in those parishes. If you would like to have something printed in the bulletin,

What happens if I use my OFFERING ENVELOPE in another Parish than my own? Will my offering go to the Parish where I went to Mass or will it go to my home parish? As an example, if you are a member of Saint Joa-chim's Parish and attend Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel you can put your envelope from Saint Joa-chim's in the collection basket at Good Counsel. We will make sure the offering goes to the Parish indicated on the envelope. If you don't use the official collection envelope, but want your offering to go to a particular Parish, please use a regular white envelope and write the name of the Parish on the Front. FAITH DIRECT is a wonderful program that you can register for. FAITH DIRECT allows you to use your credit or bank account to make your weekly offering. This is already available in Saint Joseph's and Good Counsel. It will be available in Saint Joa-chim's in the next few weeks. This is a very secure way to make sure your offering goes to the parish of your choice. Also, it helps with the free airline miles if you use your credit card as well. All cash, not in an envelope indicating parish desig-nation, will stay in the parish it was collected in. We hope this will clear up any confusion about all offerings made to the parishes. Pope Francis’ visit to New York was a monumental moment in all our lives. Our holiness brought great joy to Catholics during his visit as well as restoring our faith in the church. The Pope’s pro-found speeches, his humility amongst his flock, celebrating mass and spreading the good news to overwhelming crowds in St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Madison Square Garden was truly inspiration-al. A quote from Pope Francis’ trip is one we should try and apply to our lives. If every individual could follow his advice, we may be able to achieve making the world a better place. “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” Pope Francis, 2015. Those who walk with simplicity proclaim the steadfast love of our God. Saint Joachim’s Church Do you find yourself humming certain hymns well after mass is over? Do you like being with people? Are you available on Thursday evenings or Sunday afternoons? If you answered yes to any of these questions, perhaps the Adult choir is for you. The Adult Choir sings either at the 11.00 am mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel or at the 1130 mass at Saint Joachim’s church and also at other special liturgy’s as well. For the time being rehearsal time for booth choirs will be on Thursdays evenings at 6.00 pm or on Saturdays at 11.00am. Youth Choir members are in grades 4 through 12.Rehearsals are held twice a week, you have a choice of Thursday afternoons at 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm or on Sat-urday afternoons 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm.The Youth Choir will alternate singing at the 9.30 am mass and the 11.00am mass at Our Lady Of Good Counsel on Sundays as well as alternating at the 11.30 mass at Saint Joa-chim’s in Cedarhurst. The youth Choir will be singing in three languages Latin, English and Spanish. Spanish Choir members sing at the 9.30 am Mass on Sundays. Choir rehearsal is usually on Saturdays from 1.00 am to 2.00pm. The Spanish Choir will also be sing-ing at all upcoming bilingual liturgies as well. Cherub Choir members are in grades 1 through 3 .Rehearsals are held on Wednesday afternoons from 4.00pm to 4.45pm. The Cherub Choir will alternate sing-ing at the 9.30 am mass or the 11.00 am mass as well as the 11.30 mass at Saint Joachim’s church in Cedarhurst. This fall, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be

honored at liturgies on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015 at the Church of St. rose of Lima

in Massapequa and on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the Church of Christ the King in Commack. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 pm. Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the rectory. Registration must by received by the Office of Worship by Sept. 18th for the Oct. 4th liturgy and by Oct. 23rd for the November 8th

liturgy. There will be additional celebrations in the spring for those who may find that more convenient.

Dates for the spring celebrations will be communicated at a later time.

Eucharistic Adoration Program Please Help Us by Joining Us!

Have you ever considered volunteering as

part of the Eucharistic Adoration program?

Located at St. Joseph’s, the program allows

for us all to spend some time in the presence of Jesus

Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. No special prayers or

readings required. It’s just your opportunity to sit, read and

pray in silence. A wonderful opportunity to find moments

of peace with God in the midst of our busy life.. The

program runs each week (Wednesday 9am - Thursday

9am), and is located in the Adoration Chapel at St Joseph’s

– 1346 Broadway in Hewlett . We need regular volunteers

who can offer an hour each week to remain with the

Blessed Sacrament. Maybe consider taking an hour as a

family, so that if one person can’t make it,

others will be available to cover.

While we’re need volunteers for all the hours, we

especially need volunteers for the following:

Wednesday 12pm, 3pm, 10pm, 11pm

On Sept. 20, Peninsula Kiwanis sponsored a CPR training course at

Our Lady of Good Counsel in Inwood. The class was conducted by members

John Kohan and Joe Girardi, with assistance from the Inwood Fire

Department and the Atlantic Beach Rescue Company. In addition to CPR, blood pressure readings were taken. The class was attended by 35 people

and was conducted in both English and Spanish.

The old world of what we call canonical penance, or the extraordinary one�time public repentance of sinners, began to collapse with the conversion of Constantine in the early fourth century. It tottered for a hundred years or so and then virtually disappeared. It served an isolated and persecuted church well, but once people began seeking baptism for economic and political privilege, a real pastoral crisis exploded. There were more lukewarm Christians afoot, and some “barbarians” rampaging through the ruins ac-cepted baptism just because their leaders did. As the old structures collapsed, people who still sought some sort of public conversion scampered off to the desert to live in monastic isolation. Penance disappeared from the parish scene, and the old bench where hungry penitents used to beg for prayers was empty. Some bishops faced the crisis by inventing alternate means of discipline, all more private than public. A person might be asked to refrain from receiv-ing Communion for a time, or even to accept some sort of corporal punishment (the pedigree of the stocks and scarlet letters of colonial America). This had the effect of separat-ing the sinner from the prayerful intercession of the gath-ered church, and made an already bad situation worse. mento del matrimonio. Así como a las religio-sas y los religiosos no profesan una consagra-ción de vida sin antes haberse asegurado de su motivación, la pareja comprometida debe ver y evaluar muy bien lo que está haciendo y asegu-rarse de que no haya algún impedimento para el matrimonio. Han de reconocer concientemente cuál es la motivación por la cual quieren unir su vida.

Para que un matrimonio sea válido, según las leyes de la Iglesia, los contrayentes deben tener una edad apropiada, saber lo que hacen y que no haya impedimento alguno, por ejemplo, la presión de la familia, embarazo prematuro o el deseo de salir de la casa familiar. Vigésimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

TOWARD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS From the beginning of creation, God intended for people to live together in relationship with one another. Much of scripture shows us how to do this as it illustrates and clarifies God’s plans. The readings this weekend guide us in the value and care of our relationships. Specifically, the Gospel focuses on the circumstances of failed relationships. Unlike the Pharisees, we would do well not to focus on the laws that pertain to failed rela-tionships, but concentrate instead on what God really intended for us. Healthy bonds require a lot of our time and energy. They certainly re-quire trust and honesty. Jesus demonstrated a deep commitment to his friends and to us. As our brother, he gave his very life for us. Children work hard at friendships. They trust, forgive, and love without conditions. The final words of today’s Gospel invite us to welcome Jesus and the people of our relationships with the fresh enthusiasm of a child. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

lecturas este fin de semana ofrecen una guía para valorar y cuidar de nuestras relaciones humanas. Específicamente, el Evangelio se enfoca en las circunstancias de una relación que ha fallado. A diferencia de los fariseos, nos conviene no tanto enfatizar las leyes que se aplican a relaciones que fallan, sino más bien, dar prioridad a lo que en realidad Dios deseaba para nosotros. Los vínculos saludables requieren de nosotros mucho tiempo y dedicación. Ciertamente exigen confianza y ho-nestidad. Jesús demostró un profundo compromi-

so con sus amigos y para con nosotros. Como un hermano, entregó hasta su vida por nosotros. Los niños se ocupan mu-cho de sus amistades. Ellos confían, perdonan, aman sin con-diciones.
