Food pantry

As the cold weather is upon us, we continue to depend upon your generosity and kindness by bringing food each week to church. To help you with this there is a new shopping list in the back of the church with some added items on the list. Please feel free to take one. We also accept all grocery store gift cards and we will do the shopping for you. Thank you again.

This week we especially need mayonnaise, ketchup, all kinds of jar pasta sauce, Spam, Dinty Moore stew, cookies, canned fruit, jarred applesauce or snack size!

It is that time of the year.

If you are in need of your

receipt for your tax returns,

please contact the Parish

Center.

On Sunday, January 13th, our Confirmation candidates were presented at the 9:30am Mass

for the Rite of Enrollment. After Father ST accepted their promises to faithfully prepare

for the Sacrament of Confirmation, the parish community offered their

prayers to support their formation process.

Please continue to pray for them in the final months of their preparation.,

Flu season

Since we are in the midst of the cold and flu season, a reminder that if you have a cold or any flu like symptoms please refrain from receiving from the chalice. Remember when we receive the Sacred Host alone, we are still receiving the full and complete Body, Soul and Divinity of Christ. Also, if you are not feeling your best, at the sign of peace please use an alternate form of greeting besides a handshake to protect the others in our community. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Pop Tab Collection Program

Did you know that the Columbiettes collect can tabs to support those who are staying in a Ronald McDonald House? The funds generated from

recycling the aluminum tabs help offset the Ronald McDonald House expenses.

“The Ronald McDonald House serves families whose children require care at an area hospital by offering them a homelike atmosphere where they can get the rest and renewal they need to be most supportive of their sick or injured child. Guests stay at the House regardless of their ability to pay the requested $10.00 per night donation. The fee is waived over 80% of the time. However, although the House has an increasing occupancy rate per year, the requested donation does not cover the actual $60.00 per night per room expenses of maintaining the House. Therefore, philanthropic support to generate additional funds necessary to cover the House expenses is essential.”

You can help support the Ronald McDonald House by collecting the little tabs you pull to open a soda, soup, pet food, beer or other aluminum cans.

If you have tabs that you want to donate for the cause, please contact Miriam Montagne at 201-230-1373 and she will gladly collect the tabs from you.

A Tribute to Mrs. Anne Lundgren

almost guaranteed a place in heaven at the left hand of

God.

After four years, our rapport has morphed into a

positive, professional, spiritual, friendly, and loving

relationship. I guess you never realize how important

people and things are in your life until they are no longer

there. It was not until I had to assume some of her

responsibilities (along with Karen and the rest of the

staff) then I realized how much she did and how

professional and proficient she was at doing it.

Many times, I have spoken to Anne about her

relationships with her former pastors and they were not

always positive. One in particular she shared with me

that she was informed that it was her job to “always

make him look good no matter what.” Well, after

working side by side with Anne for almost four years,

I realized that I never had to tell her and yet she always

made me look good. She always defended me and

pleaded with the people when I first arrived to “give him

a chance.” She was the balance to my rants and

raves. She was the voice of reason when I wanted to

blast someone via email for making crazy accusations or

comments about what was going on in the church. She

was the first person that ever wrote letters for me. It

took only a short period of time to get down my style

and need for consistency and we were off! Of course,

in turn, I teased her mercilessly every chance I had.

In the top drawer of my desk in the Parish Center,

I have a special place where I keep a “I was wrong” file

which contains the date, time and reason why Anne was

wrong about something. Over the past four years,

I think I only have three slips of paper in this

drawer. Again, we laughed each and every time that I

added a piece of paper (usually under much consterna-

tion and reluctance).

Moreover, what I have learned in Anne’s absence is that

first and foremost, Anne was a woman of faith. She was

a daily communicant to Mass and a regular parishioner

at the 9:30am Mass. However, it was crystal clear that

this faith was in God and not in any priest, bishop or

even the pope. Her favorite saying (which I had framed

for her desk) is that the Church was often a “repressive,

regressive, insular, patriarchal and androcentric society.”

But this never kept her from serving the Church,

her priests and her faithful.

...continued on next page

I am firm believer that we should

share the smoke of gratitude and

praise with people while they are

still alive rather than waiting

until their funeral when they

cannot smell the aroma of

incense as it burned around their

casket.

This is the motive for writing this

article about Mrs. Anne Lundgren, our former Office

Manager of the Parish Center here at Saint Joseph

Church. As many of you know, when you wanted

something completed or were in need of anything; a Mass

card, a niche or crypt at the mausoleum, picking a date for

your Wedding or Baptism, or just were in need of a

listening ear or a shoulder to cry on, Anne was the person

that was always there for you. She was the hub of the

wheel that made everything work more smoothly in the

Parish Center and in the parish. This past December 31,

2018, Anne retired from her position as Office Manager

due to a serious illness and since then has been sorely

missed.

Anne began working at Saint Joseph Church on June 8,

2009, when the former pastor, Father Peter Filipkowski

asked her to work full-time in the office. Anne brought

with her the experience of working at Saint (formerly

Blessed) Kateri Church in Sparta. She continued in her

position when Father Brian was named Administrator in

July of 2010 and when I arrived in July of 2015.

I remember very clearly meeting with Anne and the rest of

the parish staff my first week in Newton and I could see

the fear in their eyes that the “new guy” was coming to

fire them all. I specifically remember telling Anne and

Karen “I know that you think I am going to fire you

immediately, but please don’t worry. I am going to wait a

few weeks and then I will fire you!” I am not sure they

understood my “unique” sense of humor at the

time. Now, almost four years later, Anne and I have

laughed how she said to herself (and maybe to a few close

friends) “I will not last long” to which I replied,

I remember thinking to myself “she will not last long.” Is it

not funny how time seems to make strange and unique co-

workers and friends?

During this same first week in Newton, I also remember

telling Anne “I have a firm belief that any woman who

works for a priest goes directly to heaven.” And since she

has worked for five priests and five parochial vicars, she is

Tribute continued...

Prayer in time of suffering

our lives. I am sorry for being the thorn in your side at

times and know that I will always cherish our time

together as I know you were my greatest cheerleader, my

confidant, my support and now my dear friend.

I pray that your last days on earth will be filled with the

love of your children, grandchildren and friends as you

transition to your new life in heaven.

Just keep in mind that you do not have to work for any

more priests, for now you will be with the King Himself.

Just try not to boss him around too much, He knows what

He is doing!

God bless you my friend and may the angels lead you into

paradise, may the martyrs come to your side and bring you

home to that place which had been prepared for you since

the beginning of time!

Your Friend Father ST

Anne was the consummate professional. However,

being the daughter of a doctor, she did not suffer fools

well. I can often remember telling her “Please do not

offend the parishioners, that is my job!” Again we

laughed and continued working harder to get the job

completed.

Anne was a confidential person that held everyone’s

financial, spiritual and personal matters close to her

heart. I do not think I ever heard her gossip about

anyone, but was not afraid to “say it like it was” when

necessary.

But above all her professional credentials and abilities,

what I miss most about her is her feminine and motherly

perspective, her sense of justice, her similar sense of

humor, her ability to always get the job done, never once

complaining and never once concerned about putting in

the extra time that a project or situation needed.

What I also enjoyed (a lot) is that I could get away with

things that most people never were able to with

her. After the loss of her husband Charlie and her sister

Karen, we often had little “chats” in my office after the

office work was completed. She really had a difficult

and yet unique time of mourning for both of these

losses in her life. But once again, she was a trooper and

never a quitter. Often times she would remark to me

“I hate when you are so logical.” Again, we laughed and

continued to fight the good fight.

I wanted you to know all these things because Anne was

more than just a “secretary” to the parish. A term which

I was very careful NEVER to use when referring to her

(either in her presence or absence). Because for Anne,

Saint Joseph Church was her fourth child and I may

have been her fifth. She loved her work and was more

than just adequate at it. She brought her wealth of

experience, her many years of dealing with parishioners

and her ability to put up with priests. She made the ship

run smoothly and never was a clock watcher or a keeper

of time that was necessary to complete a project.

I miss Anne more and more each day and as we spoke

this past week, what she has learned from her own

sickness is to appreciate what you have, enjoy your life

and take time to smell the roses and every once in a

while, send someone a dozen or two.

Anne, this is my rose to you. Like every beautiful rose

there are thorns that grow on their stems, so too it is in

Behold me, my beloved Jesus, weighed down under the burden

of my trials and sufferings, I cast myself at Your feet,

that You may renew my strength and my courage,

while I rest here in Your Presence. Permit me to lay down my cross

in Your Sacred Heart, for only Your infinite goodness

can sustain me; only Your love can help me bear my cross;

only Your powerful hand can lighten its weight. O Divine King, Jesus,

whose heart is so compassionate to the afflicted,

I wish to live in You; suffer and die in You.

During my life be to me my model and my support;

At the hour of my death, be my hope and my refuge.

Amen.
