PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL: ITS SENSE OF PURPOSE

In this council, which is presided over by the parish priest, Christ’s faithful, together with those who by virtue of their office are engaged in pastoral care in the parish, give their help in fostering pastoral action. The pastoral council has only a consultative vote, and is regulated by the norms laid down for the diocesan Bishop. The Code of Canon Law, Canon 536

The Archdiocese of Chicago, as early as 1989, mandated the formation of a Parish Pastoral Council in every parish. Archdiocesan Norms drawn from “positive experiences” of many parishes helped to direct and develop the formation process. The overriding purpose of any council is shared responsibility “for the pastoral life of the parish under the leadership of the pastor.” This responsibility is fourfold:

⇒ to research the needs, ideas and hopes of the faith community; ⇒ to encourage and support existing ministries; ⇒ to evaluate the parish’s “quality of life”; ⇒ to plan for the parish’s future by recommending policies, procedures, and programs that

will implement its values and fulfill the Church’s mission. Since it is consultative and advisory, the Parish Pastoral Council should not be mistaken for a legisla-tive body. Nor should it operate in the way political organizations often do - - with a competitive, “win or lose” attitude. In his pastoral letter, Bishop Bambera of Scranton describes four “hallmarks” for parish councils:

1. The need to be centered in prayer with special emphasis on the Eucharist; 2. Discernment and consensus in decision making; 3. Council members are not automatically the chairperson from each parish committee 4. Servant leadership - - the image of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples - - models the

attitude for pastors and council members. While Bishop Bambera is not our Ordinary, what he says reflects the shared wisdom of Catholic leaders. For our new Council members, discernment and consensus have been stressed simply because they are not the way the average person ordinarily makes decisions. Concretely, our new council members arrived at their own “Statement of Purpose” by successfully exercising discern-ment and consensus. I would like to conclude this introduction of our new Parish Pastoral Council members (see their biographies and pictures) with the Statement upon which they all agreed.

⇒ TO SERVE AS A CONSULTATIVE BODY TO THE PASTOR PROVIDING GUIDANCE FOR THE SPIRITUAL LIFE, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES OF THE PARISH ⇒ TO DISCERN PRAYERFULLY AND COMMUNICATE THE NEEDS OF THE PARISH ⇒ TO HELP THE PARISH TO CARRY OUT THE MISSION OF CHRIST

please feel free to drop your donation in the collection or at the rectory in an envelope marked “2013 ACA.”

As they begin their service to the parish, let us pray for our new Parish Pastoral Council members. May they be inspired by St. Peter’s exhortation to serve one another in love.

“Above all, let your love for one another be strong; for charity covers a multitude of sins. Be welcoming to one another without complaint. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (I Peter: 4, 8-10)

Edward Segraves PPC Chairperson I have been a parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues a little over 10 years, moving to Glenview from Skokie and Chicago. My wife and I love the outdoors and spend our free time gardening, bicycling and canoeing. I am a Eucharistic Minister and I am looking forward to being a part of the Parish Council so that I can better live my faith.

Elizabeth Houlihan PPC Secretary Spiritual Life Commission I have been a member of St. Isaac Jogues for 10 years, a lector for 8 years and I serve on the Spiritual Life Commission. I reside in Des Plaines and I am widowed with one son who is in graduate school. I am a CPA and currently retired. I enjoy St. Isaac Jogues because of the friendliness of the parishioners and the parish staff. I especially enjoy the multicultural aspect of this parish.

Barbara Napravnik Parish Life Commission I have been a member of St. Isaac Jogues for 50 years. In joining the Women’s Club, I have been President, Vice President and headed many commissions & committees including Prayer Shawl, Spiritual Life, Eucharistic Ministry and Music Ministry to name a few. Many of my closest friends come from this Parish.

Kathy Zacharia Human Concerns Commission My husband, James, and my two children and I have been parishioners at St. Isaac Jogues since 1988. What I most appreciate is its small community atmosphere and the many opportunities it has provided our family for spiritual growth. I have particularly appreciated how the parish community has influenced my children who were enrolled in the elementary school, took religious education classes, were altar servers and worked in the parish office. I am personally involved in Ministry of Care and Ministry of Praise. I hope

that SIJ will continue to be a vibrant and nurturing parish that provides many opportunities to its diverse community of believers. As a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, I look forward to being able to play a role in shaping our future.

Nenita Mallari I have been a parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues for the past 29 years. I’m presently involved in the parish as a Eucharistic Minister and a Minister of Care at Glenbridge Nursing Home. I am also actively involved in our parish outreach program, St. Vincent de Paul Ministry, where we help the poor and underprivileged members of our community. I am a member of the rosary group where we pray every day, the needs of the poor, the sick, the unemployed and all those who need prayers. Being part of the PPC will help me give back to the community the many blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon me and my family.

Barbara Kennedy Watson I have been a parishioner for 40 years. I am an attorney and have served on the Finance Committee for the last 15 years and have been an active member of the Women’s Club for 34 years. I am also currently a Eucharistic Minister. I would like to be instrumental in making everyone feel that they are an important part of the parish, that their spiritual and physical needs are met, and that their participation and support is welcomed and needed to make this the best parish in the diocese.

Danuta Ellsworth I’ve been married for 28 years to Richard and we have a 19 year old daughter, Olivia who is a full-time student at UIC. I’ve been a parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues for 25 years. For the last 16 years, I’ve been involved with the Paderewski Polish School and I’m one of the representatives of the Polish Group at SIJ. What I enjoy about SIJ is the multicultural aspect of the parish which allows the parishioners to share dif-ferent customs, ideas and worship together as a Christian community.

Joseph DeSario I have been a member of St. Isaac Jogues since 1960. My wife and I both graduated from SIJ Elementary School as did my three children. The parish has been my spiritual home for decades and I am now blessed with the opportunity to give something back through service to the Parish Pastoral Council and the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry.

Kathy Lord I was raised a Catholic in a family of 10 (eight children), attending parochial schools in California through high school. I am currently a pediatric occupational therapist and holistic nutritionist working in a private clinic in Skokie. I have been a parishioner at St. Isaac Jogues for 4 years with my husband Bob. We moved from California to “Chicago” in 1998 “for the weather.” I have found SIJ to be a warm and welcoming parish where the community is diverse, yet united in Christ. I am a Eucharistic Minister at the 7:30 a.m. Mass and am very excited to be a member of the PPC to help support and broaden the youth community’s participation in the spiritual life of the parish.

Robert Lord I became a Catholic in the 2nd grade, just before 1st communion, at St. Mark’s church in Peoria. We moved to Chicago during WWII and I continued my Catholic education in the Chicago Archdiocese. In 1953, I moved to California; convenience of the government (Korean War). In 1998, I moved back to Chicago with my wife, Kathy. We’ve been members of St. Isaac Jogues for 4 years, where I currently lector at the 7:30 mass.

Dolores (Dee) Stanton I joined the Pastoral Staff as the Director of Religious Education in July, 1988. I am married to Deacon Paul and we are the proud parents of Elizabeth. There are numerous ministries, committees and commissions with whom I work, but most important to me is being with and serving the people of this faith community in their joys and sorrows, disappointments and hopes. The Parish Pastoral Council will be a guide and support to our community’s growth in holiness, evangelization, and stewardship, but all the baptized are entrusted with the mission of Christ. May the Lord bless our parish and may each of us con-tinue to, as St. Paul writes to the Philippians, “...humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,

each looking out not for his own interests, but also everyone for those of others. (2:4)”

Lori Herbert I joined the St. Isaac Jogues staff in 2011, assuming the business manager position in 2012. While my main function is primarily financial oversight & business management, my position is pastoral in nature as well - assisting anyone who needs our help. My husband, John, also a business manager for three parishes, is hopefully working towards deaconate ordination in 2014. We are very involved in our parish, St. Martha, where I currently hold the position of Parish Pastoral Council Chairperson, serve as Eucharistic Minister and work on many Commission Activities. Here I serve as an advisor to the pastor, and look forward to working with the parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues in whatever way I can.

Registration for the 2013-2014 Religious Education Program for Kindergarten through Confirmation Year II has begun! Families currently in the RE Program should register by the end of this week, June 15, in or-der to avoid the $25 late fee. New families are asked to call the RE Office to come in and fill out registration forms. You will also need to bring a copy of each child’s baptismal certifi-cate if they were not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues. Kindergarten classes meet on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1 – Confirmation Year II meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children come each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. If families have children with special needs who have not re-ceived their sacraments, we would be happy to meet with you and discuss options. There is tuition, and applicable book and sacrament fees. Families with financial concerns are en-couraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. All are welcome! If you have questions, please call the Religious Education Office at 847/966-1180. We look forward to the opportunity to help all families raise their children in our Catholic faith!

HOSPITALITY WEEKENDHOSPITALITY WEEKEND All are invited to come to the Holy

Family Room after Masses TODAY for refreshments, conversation, and to

meet members of the Pastoral Council. We look forward to being with you!

CORPUS CHRISTI CORPUS CHRISTI The Lord was reverenced and praised by the full Church during the Noon Mass. Thank you to all the liturgical ministers, the music ministers, and all who participated in this time of thanks for the precious gift of the Eucharist.

This year’s Corpus Christi procession was the first one that had to be held indoors but it was, again, a beautiful and prayerful event! Two of the altars were in the Holy Family Room and two were in the school hallway. The altars were already set up outside and the decision was made to move them in because the weather was getting worse. Folks stepped up and moved everything in less than 20 minutes. The procession

included our Bell Choir, children with flower petals, the canopy over the Eucharist; readings, prayers, and songs in languages and benediction at each altar. While that was taking place, there were several who were setting up the lunch. The food was enjoyed, the conversations were many and everyone including parishioners, visitors and our friends from Maternity BVM Parish, were so happy to be together. Thank you to all who worked so hard and so well to make this annual celebration very special once again.

Teen Mass and Dinner

St. Isaac Jogues Teen Group invites the Teens (going into 8th grade and older) of the parish to a

“Graduation, Confirmation and Hurray for Summer Celebration!” on Saturday, June 29th. Come to the 5 p.m. Parish Mass followed by food, friends, fun, music, and games in the Holy Family Room. Our

special guests will be Confirmands and Graduates (invitations were given to you in RE Class or

mailed)! Please contact the Religious Education Office, 847/966-1180 or [email protected], and let us know If you are coming by Monday,

June 24th so we can plan the food. Thanks!

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSIONHUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION

The Human Concerns Commission will meet this Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in Rm. 6 of the school (enter

from Holy Family Room). We will discuss the material provided to

you regarding ministry to military families and veterans. Calendaring

for next season will also take place. Members who are unable to attend are asked to contact Dee by

Wednesday, 847/966-1180.

Our next FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES is this week, June 14th. We will be showing the film “Big Fish.” It will be a great film for

Father’s Day weekend since it has to do primarily with the relationship between a father (played

by Albert Finney) and his adult son. The son has a poor relationship with his father mostly because the son hates his father telling the same old stories

over and over again, mostly because the son doesn’t believe they were true. The stories are so over the top that they seem impossible. That is until the son starts to do some investigating

and finds out they’re true. This is a film you will love and it will touch your heart.

The movie will be shown in the Parish Hall (downstairs of church) beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Doors will open at 6:30. There will be complementary popcorn and soft drinks and, of course, the movie is free as well.

All are welcome. Bring your friends.

at St. Isaac Jogues!

2013 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM

The United States Bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a two-week period of prayer and action, to address many current challenges to religious liberty, including the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate; Supreme Court rulings that could redefine marriage in June, and religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. The fortnight will begin on Friday, June 21 (the vigil of the feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher) and culminate with Independence Day, July 4. Here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish we will offer opportunities for prayer, learning and action during the two-week period. At daily and weekend Masses we will pray the “Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty” at the end of the intercessions; a 14-day booklet with readings and questions will be available at the doors of the church next weekend (and used for the discussion days); materials and websites will be listed in the bulletin. Weekday evening offerings will begin at 7:00 p.m. While a couple of details are being worked out, the schedule is as follows: June 21 Patriotic Rosary June 22-23 Prayer at Mass June 24 Religious Liberty discussion using daily readings/questions for Week 1 Sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. June 25 Holy Hour & Benediction June 26 Showing of “For Greater Glory” June 27 Mass in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help June 28 Patriotic Rosary June 29-30 Prayer at Mass July 1 Religious Liberty discussion using daily readings/questions for Week 2 Sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. July 2 Holy Hour & Benediction July 3 No evening activity planned July 4 Patriotic Rosary, 8 a.m.; Independence Day Mass, 9 a.m. July 5 First Friday Adoration and Devotions The call of the Gospel reminds us that responsible citizenship is a virtue and participation in the political life is a moral obligation. This obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. We urge you to plan how you will participate in some way during the Fortnight for Freedom.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Tuesday: St. Barnabas Thursday: St. Anthony of Padua Friday: Flag Day Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: TAKE “In England you might see a restaurant sign that says ‘Dine in or take away.’ For the British ‘take away’ is equivalent to our ‘carry out.’ Actually, ‘take away’ may be the more accurate phrase. It implies obtaining something, holding it, and going away to consume it elsewhere. Surprisingly, this same action of ‘taking away’ is deeply embedded in the Sunday Mass we cele-brate together, although it’s not an immediately obvious action. “If we have fully and actively participated in the Mass, we will take away the Word of God and the Bread of Life that we have received. We will hold onto these sustaining realities within our-selves. We will walk back into our familiar worlds of family, work, and community. And there we will continue to draw from these mysteries and, God willing, share them with others.” Louis J. Cameli, c2013, Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications

YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS: QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Because of his compassion — “He was moved with pity for her” —

Jesus returns the son of the widow of Nain to live and gives him back to her.

How has the Eucharist been ‘the bread of compassion’ for me, enabling

me to know God’s compassionate love for me and enabling me to bring

compassion to my world?

Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 8–9, 2013, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese has been graced with over two hundred retired priests. A majority of our retired priests are in good health and continue to minister in parishes. The retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Their dedicated service enables many parishes to avoid reducing Mass schedules. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry. The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know so well, the costs for health care, prescription drugs and nursing-home care continues to increase. Also, the priests’ pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. This special collection is different from the December collection for retired men and women religious where the collection goes to those in religious orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their lives of service and exemplary ministry. May their spirit of sharing bring new life to our Church! I am thankful to all of you for your immense generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago
